Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist government was persecuting Jews and Jehovah’s Witnesses and driving forty-two small German religious sects underground, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continued to practice unhindered. How some fourteen thousand Mormons not only survived but thrived in Nazi Germany is a story little known, rarely told, and occasionally rewritten within the confines of the Church’s history—for good reason, as we see in David Conley Nelson’s Moroni and the Swastika. A page-turning historical narrative, this book is the first full account of how Mormons avoided Nazi persecution through skilled collaboration with Hitler’s regime, and then eschewed postwar shame by constructing an alternative history of wartime suffering and resistance. The Twelfth Article of Faith and parts of the 134th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants function as Mormonism’s equivalent of the biblical admonition to “render unto Caesar,” a charge to cooperate with civil government, no matter how onerous doing so may be. Resurrecting this often-violated doctrinal edict, ecclesiastical leaders at the time developed a strategy that protected Mormons within Nazi Germany. Furthermore, as Nelson shows, many Mormon officials strove to fit into the Third Reich by exploiting commonalities with the Nazi state. German Mormons emphasized a mutual interest in genealogy and a passion for sports. They sent husbands into the Wehrmacht and sons into the Hitler Youth, and they prayed for a German victory when the war began. They also purged Jewish references from hymnals, lesson plans, and liturgical practices. One American mission president even wrote an article for the official Nazi Party newspaper, extolling parallels between Utah Mormon and German Nazi society. Nelson documents this collaboration, as well as subsequent efforts to suppress it by fashioning a new collective memory of ordinary German Mormons’ courage and travails during the war. Recovering this inconvenient past, Moroni and the Swastika restores a complex and difficult chapter to the history of Nazi Germany and the Mormon Church in the twentieth century—and offers new insight into the construction of historical truth.

Download or read book Studies in Mormon History 1830 1997 written by James B. Allen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 1152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years in the making, Studies in Mormon History is the most complete and comprehensive bibliography ever attempted on historical literature about the Mormons. Created by three of the leading figures in Mormon studies, this volume provides author and topical listings of books, articles, theses, and dissertations dealing with the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beginning with its inception in 1830. This massive compilation contains more than 2,600 books, 10,400 articles, 1,800 theses and dissertations, and 150 significant typescripts and task papers. While most highly polemical literature has been excluded, the authors have endeavored to include every English-language publication that contributes substantively to a historical understanding of the church's development and its place in the larger context of American history and religion. These writings range from works of serious scholarship to stories of the pioneers, biographical sketches of church officers, and devotional biographies of leading Mormon men and women. A monumental achievement, Studies in Mormon History is an indispensable guide to research and scholarship in Mormon history as well as in the history of the American West. This work also features an important topical guide to Mormon social science literature, compiled by Armand L. Mauss and Dynette Ivie Reynolds.

Book excerpt: The Stop Child Molestation Book has been called "groundbreaking," "hard-hitting," and "a must-read for every family in America." What makes this a break-through book is its plan of action to put an end to child molestation. Using new facts from their study of 16,000 people, Gene G. Abel, M.D.and Nora Harlow urge families to take three powerful steps to protect their children. "We want to stop child molestation in the United States before we die. Only a few years ago that goal seemed laughable. Now, the breakthroughs in testing, medicine, and therapies will stop the people who molest children. Child molestation — with its at least 39 million adult survivors and more than three million child victims — can end. The problem we face is getting the word out. Everything you need to know is in this book. We ask you to read it. We ask you to tell others. And, we ask you to become a hero and step forward to protect the children closest to you." -Gene G. Abel, M.D. and Nora Harlow
