Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Apostasy Considered a Sermon Preached in St. Mary's, Oxford: Before His Majesty's Judges of Assize, on Sunday, July 14, 1833 Since the following pages were prepared for the press, the calamity, in anticipation of which they were written, has actually overtaken this portion of the Church of god. The Legislature of England and Ireland, (the members of which are not even bound to profess belief in tbe Atone ment, ) this body has virtually usurped the com mission of those whom our saviour entrusted with at least one'voz'ce in making ecclesiastical laws, on matters wholly or partly Spiritual. The same Legislature has also ratified, to its full ex tent, this principle; - that the Apostolical Church in this realm is henceforth only to stand, in the eye Of the State, as one sect among many, de pending, for any preeminence she may still ap pear to retain, merely upon the accident of her having a strong party in the country. Book John Henry Newman Fifteen Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford

Download or read book John Henry Newman Fifteen Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford written by James David Earnest and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newman himself called the Oxford University Sermons, first published in 1843, `the best, not the most perfect, book I have done'. He added, `I mean there is more to develop in it'. Indeed, the book is a precursor of all his major later works, including especially the Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine and the Grammar of Assent. Dealing with the relationship of faith and reason, the fifteen sermons represent Newman's resolution of the conflict between heart and head that so troubled believers, non-believers, and agnostics of the nineteenth century, Their controversial nature also makes them one of the primary documents of the Oxford Movement. This new edition provides an introduction to the sermons, a definitive text with textual variants, extensive annotation, and appendices containing previously unpublished material.

Book A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology

Download or read book A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology written by Brian Douglas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglican eucharistic theology varies between the different philosophical assumptions of realism and nominalism. Whereas realism links the signs of the Eucharist with what they signify in a real way, nominalism sees these signs as reminders only of past and completed transaction. This book begins by discussing the multifomity of the philosophical assumptions underlying Anglican eucharistic theology and goes on to present extensive case study material which exemplify these different assumptions from the Reformation to the Nineteenth century. By examining the multiformity of philosophical assumptions this book avoids the hermeneutic idealism of particular church parties and looks instead at the Anglican eucharistic tradition in a more critical manner.

Book The Eucharistic Theology of Edward Bouverie Pusey

Download or read book The Eucharistic Theology of Edward Bouverie Pusey written by Brian Douglas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Eucharistic Theology of Edward Bouverie Pusey (1800-1882 and Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University from 1828 to 1882), Brian Douglas offers a critical account of Pusey’s eucharistic theology set in the context of his life and work at Oxford and as the leader of the nineteenth century Oxford Movement. Pusey has often been characterised as conservative and obscurantist but in this book Douglas critically assesses Pusey’s eucharistic theology as a consistent expression of moderate realism which is both wise and creative. The book analyses Pusey’s extensive written output on eucharistic theology and ends with a reassessment of Pusey as a theologian, portraying him as a thinker owing much to Scripture, the early church Fathers, Anglican divines and philosophical reflection. Pusey is also seen to anticipate modern eucharistic theology. Reassessments of Pusey in the modern era are rare and this book contributes to a significant gap in the literature.
