Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAA undertook a multibillion-dollar modernization effort in 1981, but it has experienced serious delays. To get the modernization effort back on track, the FAA -- in consultation with the aviation community -- is developing a phased approach to modernization, including a new way of managing air traffic known as "free flight." This report reviews: (1) the status of the FAA's efforts to implement free flight, including a planned operational demonstration formerly known as Flight 2000; and (2) the views of the aviation community and FAA on the challenges that must be met to implement free flight in a cost-effective manner. Book National Airspace System FAA Reauthorization Issues are Critical to System Transformation and Operations

Download or read book National Airspace System FAA Reauthorization Issues are Critical to System Transformation and Operations written by Gerald L. Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses six issues that are important in reauthorizing FAA programs: (1) Ensuring the safe and efficient transformation to the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen); (2) Strengthening oversight of aviation safety: Incomplete and inaccurate safety data jeopardize FAA's implementation of a new safety management approach; (3) Reducing congestion and providing access to the national airspace system; (4) Addressing aviation's impact on the environment, including noise, emissions, and other pollutants; (5) Ensuring a sufficient, trained workforce; and (6) Ensuring timely reauthorization of FAA programs. Book Next Generation Air Transportation System

Download or read book Next Generation Air Transportation System written by Gerald L. Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAA is planning and coordinating R&D for the next generation air transportation system (NextGen). Transitioning to the NextGen will require FAA to continue to acquire new air traffic control (ATC) systems on schedule and on budget. NextGen includes system acquisitions but is a significantly larger initiative involving multiple federal agencies, such as NASA, which conducted aeronautics R&D for NextGen, and non-federal aviation stakeholders, such as aviation equipment manufacturers, airports, and aircraft operators. This report addressed: (1) FAA¿s ATC systems acquisition activities; (2) key NextGen planning and transition issues; and (3) key challenges that FAA faces in implementing NextGen. Illustrations.

Book Next Generation Air Transportation System Status of Transformation and Issues Associated with Midterm Implementation of Capabilities

Download or read book Next Generation Air Transportation System Status of Transformation and Issues Associated with Midterm Implementation of Capabilities written by Gerald L. Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAA, incl. its Joint Planning and Dev¿t. Office (JPDO) and Air Traffic Org. (ATO), is planning for and implementing the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) in partnership with other fed. agencies and the aviation industry. NextGen will transform the current radar-based air traffic control system into a more automated, aircraft-centered, satellite-based system. This testimony focuses on: (1) JPDO's and ATO's progress in planning and implementing NextGen; (2) ongoing efforts to implement midterm capabilities to address capacity constraints and delays; (3) the potential impact on NextGen of organizational changes and human capital issues; and (4) R&D and facilities maintenance and reconfiguration challenges going forward. Book Federal Aviation Administration Efforts to Hire Staff and Train Air Traffic Controllers are Generally on Track But Challenges Remain

Download or read book Federal Aviation Administration Efforts to Hire Staff and Train Air Traffic Controllers are Generally on Track But Challenges Remain written by Gerald L. Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each day, the FAA controls the take-offs, landings, and flights of over 50,000 aircraft. To accomplish this mission safely and efficiently, FAA must have a sufficient number of adequately trained air traffic controllers working at its air traffic control facilities. Over the next decade, FAA will need to hire and train nearly 17,000 controllers to replace over 15,000 current controllers, most of whom will be retiring. This massive hiring effort will occur as FAA begins to implement the next generation air transportation system, which will integrate new technologies and procedures into air traffic operations. Book National Airspace System free flight tools show promise but implementation challenges remain

Download or read book National Airspace System free flight tools show promise but implementation challenges remain written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To help meet the growing demand for air travel, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in collaboration with the aviation community, is implementing a new approach for air traffic management known as free flight. Under this approach, FAA is moving gradually from its present use of highly structured rules and procedures for air traffic operations to a more flexible approach, which increases collaboration between FAA and the aviation community. By using a set of new automated technologies (tools) and procedures, free flight is intended to increase the capacity and efficiency of our nation's airspace system while helping to minimize delays. Two of these tools, the Traffic Management Advisor and the passive Final Approach Spacing Tool, provide controllers with a more efficient and effective means to increase the capacity of our nation's airspace system by better scheduling, sequencing, spacing, and assigning aircraft to runways. These two tools are expected to allow more aircraft to land during peak periods of traffic, thus increasing capacity and minimizing delays. Another tool, the User Request Evaluation Tool, allows controllers to make more efficient use of the existing airspace by allowing aircraft to fly optimal or more direct routes, thus helping to reduce delays at major airports. Collectively, these tools are also designed to achieve the above benefits without negatively affecting safety.

Book Measurement of the National Airspace System

This book was released on 1964 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a limited description of the present FAA system for measurement of the Nation al Airspace System. It suggests that measures of operational effectiveness be added to the present system to provide inputs for cost/benefit studies and to assist top management in dm1ision making functions. (Author).
