This new theory contains four sub-theories: contextual, substantive, procedural, and analytical ones. At the empirical level, a cross-case analysis of national human rights action plans of 53 countries is conducted exploring the major problems of these plans in different phases of planning and uncovering the underlying causes of these problems. At the practical level, this volume sets out how these plans should be developed and implemented, how they can be best monitored by international human rights bodies, and how to maximize their effectiveness. The monograph by Macchi proposes a functionalist reading of the state’s duty to regulate the transnational activities of corporations in order to protect human rights and adopts a holistic approach to the corporate responsibility to respect, arguing that environmental and climate due diligence are inherent dimensions of human rights due diligence. It is a continuation of the briefing paper that I wrote during the Global Governance seminar. It analyses the effects of Multinational Enterprises on a macroeconomic and corporate social responsibility level and describes the GC and its advantages and disadvantages in more detail. Therefore, this essay will not take up these points again. As a result of globalisation, Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) have become increasingly powerful and important. This concentration of power goes hand in hand with some negative effects such as avoidance of taxation, quasi-monopolies or issues like the non-observance of environmental, labour protection and human rights standards.
