Download or read book We ll to the Woods No More written by Edouard Dujardin and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1990 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delightful period piece of Paris in the late 1880's, We'll to the Woods No More (Les lauriers sont coupés) retains its importance as the first use of the monologue intérieur and the inspiration for the stream-of-consciousness technique perfected by James Joyce. Dujardin's charming tale, told with insight and irony, recounts what goes on in the mind of a young man-about-town in love with a Parisian actress. Mallarmé described the poetry of the telling as "the instant seized by the throat." Originally published in France in 1887, the first English translation (by Joyce scholar Stuart Gilbert) was published by New Directions in 1938. In 1957 Leon Edel's perceptive historical essay reintroduced the book as "the rare and beautiful case of a minor work which launched a major movement."

This book was released on 2009 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science, and Technology for Development (IAASTD) looks realistically at how we could effectively use agriculture/AKST to help us meet development and sustainability goals. An unprecedented three-year collaborative effort, the IAASTD involved more than 400 authors in 110 countries and cost more than $11 million. It reports on the advances and setbacks of the past fifty years and offers options for the next fifty years. The results of the project are contained in seven reports: a Global Report, five regional Sub-Global Assessments, and a Synthesis Report. The Global Report gives the key findings of the Assessment, and the five Sub-Global Assessments address regional challenges. The volumes present options for action. All of the reports have been extensively peer-reviewed by governments and experts and all have been approved by a panel of participating governments. The Sub-Global Assessments all utilize a similar and consistent framework: examining and reporting on the impacts of AKST on hunger, poverty, nutrition, human health, and environmental/social sustainability. The five Sub-Global Assessments cover the following regions: Central and West Asia and North Africa (CWANA) East and South Asia and the Pacific (ESAP) Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) North America and Europe (NAE) Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)
Download or read book A Cultural History of the Avant Garde in the Nordic Countries 1900 1925 written by Hubert van den Berg and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2012 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries 1900-1925 is the first publication to deal with the avant-garde in the Nordic countries at the start of the twentieth century. The essays cover a wide range of avant-garde manifestations in arts and culture: literature, the visual arts, painting as well as photography, architecture and design, film, radio, and performing arts like music, theatre and dance. It is the first major historical work to consider the Nordic avant-garde in a transnational perspective which includes all the arts and to discuss the role of the avant-garde not only within the aesthetic field, but in a broader cultural context. It examines the social and cultural context of the avant-garde: its media, its locations, its reception and audiences, the transmissions between Scandinavia and Europe, and its cultural consequences. The essays trace the connections between the avant-garde and the cultural discourses of contemporary currents such as revolutionary socialism, radical nationalism and occultism, and discuss questions of gender, ideology and politics, geographical location and technological innovation. The cultural history thus focuses on the role of the avant-garde in shaping the ideas of cultural modernity in the Nordic countries.

Book excerpt: Between 1790 and 1910, Danish painters developed a national school of art that matched the artistic centres of France, Germany and Britain. The range of outstanding works created by Nicolai Abildgaard, Jens Juel, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Christen Købke, P. S. Krøyer and Vilhelm Hammershøi reflect and refract the great stylistic tendencies of European art of the 19th century, including Classicism, Romanticism, Impressionism and Symbolism. Illustrated with over two hundred key works of art drawn from the leading Danish collections, this is the only book available in English that surveys Danish painting across the 19th century. Written by a major scholar in the field, and featuring all the icons of the Danish Golden Age, this is an essential addition to all art libraries.

Download or read book The Most Monstrous of Wars written by Milton Finley and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Most Monstrous of Wars recounts the unprecedented brutality that turned the seemingly simple task of subduing a remote Italian province into one of the most grisly, demoralizing struggles Napoleon ever encountered. Seasoned by victories in Prussia and Austria, the French military met an enemy in Italy for which it was totally unprepared - the Calabrian peasant. The vicious contest that ensued illustrates the ability of primitively armed guerrillas to cripple a modern, well-equipped, and previously invincible army. In the first full-length study of the Calabrian War, Milton Finley depicts the conflict - in all its gory detail - as a turning point in the Napoleonic wars and as the prototype for twentieth-century guerrilla warfare." "Drawing on material from military archives and from soldiers' memoirs, Finley offers a narrative that is as much social history as military chronicle. He portrays both the Calabrian and French perspectives, from the Calabrian warriors who were motivated by religious fanaticism to pay any price in defense of their province, to the French soldiers who, when faced with an enemy who excelled in atrocities, responded in kind. Finley explores the dehumanizing effects of the bloody contest that killed 20,000 French soldiers, depleted Napoleon's treasury, and escalated to a level of savagery unmatched even in twentieth-century combat. As he underscores the general futility of partisan warfare, Finley blames Napoleon for failing to learn the lesson of Calabria and for becoming embroiled in a similar quagmire in Spain, which ultimately cost him his throne."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
