Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 109 Listerine embodies a two-fold antiseptic effect, in that after the evaporation of its volatile constituents - thyme, eucalyptus, mentha, gaultheria and ethyl alcohol - a film boracic and benzoic acids remain upon the surface to which Listerine has been applied, affording more prolonged antiseptic protection. Listerine is a trustworthy surgical dressing; it has no injurious effect upon the tissues in which the healing process is going on. Listerine in proper dilution is useful in the treatment of abnormal conditions of the mucosa and forms a suitable wash, gargle or douche in catarrhal conditions of the nose and throat. Listerine in teaspoonful doses will often afford relief in fermentative dyspepsia and is largely prescribed, with excellent results, in the various forms of diarrhoea occurring in infants and adults. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 109: March, 1915 In the treatment of gunshot wounds the principles advocated by Larrey at the beginning of the 19th century were the direct antithesis of those held by Stromeyer in the middle of the century. The former preferred amputation of the injured limb in order to quickly and with a minimum amount of danger get rid of the injury. The latter advocated the conservative treatment in the most extreme form, and indeed, without the plaster bandage which Pirogoff first introduced into military surgery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 109: December, 1915 There is one very important exception to the statement that adrenalin will empty the visceral vessels of their blood. As has been pointed out, adrenalin has a vasodilator and not a vasoconstrictor action on the cardiac arteries. It is also well known that this powerful agent has little or no effect upon the cerebral and pulmonary blood-vessels. Thus we see that the blood supply of the tripod of life is not dimin ished in physical stress; on the contrary, the heart actually has more blood to send to the muscles, borrowed from the viscera, which do not need it at the time, while the brain and lungs have an undiminished supply. This is an exceedingly significant and impressive biological fact. It has been found that when adrenalin is set free in the circulation the blood will clot more rapidly. This is, of course, another safeguard developed by nature in animals as a preservative in times of conflict and injury. After long study of this question Cannon concludes that the property of causing a more rapid clotting of the blood does not reside in the adrenalin itself, but in the liver, and that the action of the adrenalin is to force the liver to set free this blood-clot ting agent in the bloodstream in greater abundance, in times of stress, than in ordinary conditions. This substance, what ever it may be, is continuously destroyed in the body and apparently as rapidly renewed in the liver. The above state ment has not yet conclusively proved to be correct, but there seems little doubt that the facts are as stated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 106: November, 1912 By T. D. Crothers, M.D., Superintendent Lodge Hospital, Hartford, Connecticut. To call all persons who drink spirits to excess alcoholics is misleading. This term gives the impression that the condition present is a specific toxic state due to alcohol alone. A study clinically often indicates that the use of spirits follows head injuries, infections fevers, shocks, sunstrokes or some dis tinct drain and condition of profound exhaustion; therefore it is only a symptom, which very likely increases the original condition. The term inebriety more accurately describes some pathological condition for which alcohol is the most grateful narcotic. Here spirits are simply a symptom of some previous degeneration and diseased condition. Clinical studies show that a very large percentage of drink and drug neurotics have had a previous history of degeneration and disease before the Spirits were taken. Historically, the fact of disease was recognized long before insanity was thought to be other than Spiritual madness.
