Book excerpt: With the completion of the world's first skyscraper in Chicago in 1885, the modern city skyline was born. A result of American technology and ingenuity, the 180-foot steel-framed Home Insurance Building rose above the city, and Americans have been reaching higher ever since. From Boston, steeped in history, to Las Vegas, a modern mirage in the desert, to Honolulu, America's paradise, each city has its own story. 'Skylines' takes us cross country and back in time to witness the steady growth of our great nation-city by city. For even the most well-seasoned air traveller, a city emerging from beneath the clouds is a compelling sight. Though the perspective is different for those arriving in cars, trains, on bicycles, or on foot, the first view of a city is always memorable. Throughout history, cartographers and explorers, photographer and artists have produced meticulous panoramas of urban areas-from the decks of ships, aloft in hot-air balloons, or perched on the side of a high hill. This sumptuous volume showcases the skylines of 48 great American cities with the spectacular panoramic photographs of Blakeway World-wide Panoramas.James Blakeway and Chris Gjevre have travelled the world photographing cities and other major attractions, waiting for the perfect time to take to the skies and capture each subject at its best. Complementing these images are historical photographs and bird's-eye-view maps reflecting each city's distinct character. The book completes its spectacular tour with a well-travelled historian guiding the reader through each city, offering atmospheric written portraits to accompany the antique photos and stunning Blakeway panoramas.

Book The Nashville Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : Benjamin Houston
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2012

  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book The Nashville Way written by Benjamin Houston and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Nashville's many slogans, the one that best reflects its emphasis on manners and decorum is the Nashville Way, a phrase coined by boosters to tout what they viewed as the city's amicable race relations. Benjamin Houston offers the first scholarly book on the history of civil rights in Nashville, providing new insights and critiques of this moderate progressivism for which the city has long been credited. Civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, James Bevel, Diane Nash, and James Lawson who came into their own in Nashville were devoted to nonviolent direct action, or what Houston calls the “black Nashville Way.” Through the dramatic story of Nashville's 1960 lunch counter sit-ins, Houston shows how these activists used nonviolence to disrupt the coercive script of day-to-day race relations. Nonviolence brought the threat of its opposite—white violence—into stark contrast, revealing that the Nashville Way was actually built on a complex relationship between etiquette and brute force. Houston goes on to detail how racial etiquette forged in the era of Jim Crow was updated in the civil rights era. Combined with this updated racial etiquette, deeper structural forces of politics and urban renewal dictate racial realities to this day. In The Nashville Way, Houston shows that white power was surprisingly adaptable. But the black Nashville Way also proved resilient as it was embraced by thousands of activists who continued to fight battles over schools, highway construction, and economic justice even after most Americans shifted their focus to southern hotspots like Birmingham and Memphis.

Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. Book Hidden History of Nashville

Download or read book Hidden History of Nashville written by George R Zepp and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection uncovers the fascinating past of Tennessee’s legendary Music City from true tall tales to larger than life characters and much more. Perched on the banks of the Cumberland River, Nashville is best known for its role in the civil rights movement, world-class education and, of course, country music. In this unique collection of columns written for The Tennessean, journalist and longtime Tennessee native George Zepp illuminates a less familiar side of the city’s history. Here, readers will learn the secrets of Timothy Demonbreun, one of the city's first residents, who lived with his family in a cliff-top cave; Cortelia Clark, the blind bluesman who continued to perform on street corners after winning a Grammy award; and Nashville's own Cinderella story, which involved legendary radio personality Edgar Bergen and his ventriloquist protegee. Based on questions from readers across the nation, these little-known tales abound with Music City mystery and charm.

Book Architecture of Middle Tennessee

Download or read book Architecture of Middle Tennessee written by Thomas B. Brumbaugh and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, Architecture of Middle Tennessee quickly became a record of some of the region's most important and most endangered buildings. Based primarily upon photographs, measured drawings, and historical and architectural information assembled by the Historic American Buildings Survey of the National Park Service in 1970 and 1971, the book was conceived of as a record of buildings preservationists assumed would soon be lost. Remarkably, though, nearly half a century later, most of the buildings featured in the book are still standing. Vanderbilt staffers discovered a treasure trove of photos and diagrams from the HABS survey that did not make the original edition in the Press archives. This new, expanded edition contains all of the original text and images from the first volume, plus many of the forgotten archived materials collected by HABS in the 1970s. In her new introduction to this reissue, Aja Bain discusses why these buildings were saved and wonders about what lessons preservationists can learn now about how to preserve a wider swath of our shared history.
