Book Revitalizing NASA s Suborbital Program

Download or read book Revitalizing NASA s Suborbital Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-04-11 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suborbital flight activities, including the use of sounding rockets, aircraft, high-altitude balloons, and suborbital reusable launch vehicles, offer valuable opportunities to advance science, train the next generation of scientists and engineers, and provide opportunities for participants in the programs to acquire skills in systems engineering and systems integration that are critical to maintaining the nation's leadership in space programs. Furthermore, the NASA Authorization Act of 2008 finds it in the national interest to expand the size of NASA's suborbital research program and to consider increased funding. Revitalizing NASA's Suborbital Program is an assessment of the current state and potential of NASA's suborbital research programs and a review of NASA's capabilities in this area. The scope of this review includes: existing programs that make use of suborbital flights; the status, capability, and availability of suborbital platforms; the existing or planned launch facilities for suborbital missions (including the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy); and opportunities for scientific research, training, and educational collaboration in the conduct of suborbital missions by NASA. The findings illustrate that suborbital program elements-airborne, balloon, and sounding rockets-play vital and necessary strategic roles in NASA's research, innovation, education, employee development, and spaceflight mission success, thus providing the foundation for achievement of agency goals.

Download or read book Moffett Field written by Nicholas A. Veronico and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The looming immensity of Moffett Field's Hangar One, built in 1933 to house the world's largest--and last--rigid-frame dirigible, is an unforgettable South Bay landmark. The lighter-than-air Macon cost 2.5 million Depression-era dollars and could hold 100 men and five Sparrowhawk biplanes, yet its silvery bulk hovered silently or sailed up to 80 miles an hour. It drew crowds as it darkened the skies around Mountain View until it broke up in a storm two years later. Other blimp squadrons, equipped with carrier pigeons instead of biplanes, succeeded the Macon. Moffett Field has at various times served the navy, army, and the air force. Now home to the world's largest wind tunnel, the NASA Ames Research Center also supports research that blazes the frontiers of supercomputing, robotics, space sciences, astrobiology, and nanotechnology.

Book Shoot for the Stars My Experience As a SOFIA Airborne Astronomy Ambassador

Download or read book Shoot for the Stars My Experience As a SOFIA Airborne Astronomy Ambassador written by George Hademenos and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA provides a host of various educational and instructional opportunities for all teachers to implement into their classroom instruction. These opportunities allow teachers to strengthen their arsenal of real-world applications of the taught content as well as provide practical examples of demonstrations, activities, lab exercises and projects that serve to reinforce the topics and concepts covered in class. One such opportunity is the SOFIA Airborne Astronomy Ambassador (AAA) program. SOFIA, or Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, is a Boeing 747SP (Special Performance) aircraft equipped with a 17-ton, 2.7 meters in diameter infrared telescope. As SOFIA approaches its maximum flying altitude of 45,000 feet, an electronically controlled door is opened, exposing the telescope to the universe, allowing academic astronomy researchers to collect infrared information from planetary and galactic objects. The AAA program is designed for science and/or astronomy educators to participate in the scientific process by flying on selected SOFIA flights. The educators learn by asking questions of the various crew members and observing the collaborative nature of team work toward the goal of obtaining astronomical information. This book chronicles my experience as a SOFIA AAA.

Book To See the Unseen

Download or read book To See the Unseen written by Andrew J. Butrica and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive & illuminating history of this little-understood, but surprisingly significant scientific activity. Quite rigorous & systematic in its methodology, the book explores the development of the radar astronomy specialty in the larger community of scientists. More than just discussing the development of this field, however, the author uses planetary radar astronomy as a vehicle for understanding larger issues relative to the planning & execution of "big science" by the Fed. government. Sources, interviews, technical essay, abbreviations, & index.
