As Black women continue to earn college degrees in record numbers, it is important to address the challenges that may impede their success as they aspire to climb the ranks. This qualitative study explored the experiences of African American women leaders serving in Illinois community colleges to learn more about the unique hardships they continue to endure due to the reality of race and gender through the use of narrative inquiry, a storytelling approach for sharing their personal stories of fortitude and perseverance. This study also provided a deeper understanding of their struggles as African American women in positions of leadership and insights into their determination to succeed. After several cycles of coding and data analysis, this study revealed a pressing need for institutions to devote efforts and resources toward finding solutions that will help retain Black women in the workplace. In particular, this study delved deeply into four major themes that emerged from this study: (a) Challenges with being Black and a woman, (b) Deconstructing microaggressions, (c) More than perseverance: Grit redefined, and (d.) Untold Stories: On the Quest to Change. While most research conducted on grit pertains to quantitative studies, as a result of a comprehensive qualitative analysis, this study provided an amended definition of grit to include the role of religion (faith), belief in one’s own ability (self-determination), and the mental fortitude to remain hopeful (strength of mind).
