Download or read book The Pirate Myth written by Amedeo Policante and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the pirate is at once spectral and ubiquitous. It haunts the imagination of international legal scholars, diplomats and statesmen involved in the war on terror. It returns in the headlines of international newspapers as an untimely ‘security threat’. It materializes on the most provincial cinematic screen and the most acclaimed works of fiction. It casts its shadow over the liquid spatiality of the Net, where cyber-activists, file-sharers and a large part of the global youth are condemned as pirates, often embracing that definition with pride rather than resentment. Today, the pirate remains a powerful political icon, embodying at once the persistent nightmare of an anomic wilderness at the fringe of civilization, and the fantasy of a possible anarchic freedom beyond the rigid norms of the state and of the market. And yet, what are the origins of this persistent ‘pirate myth’ in the Western political imagination? Can we trace the historical trajectory that has charged this ambiguous figure with the emotional, political and imaginary tensions that continue to characterize it? What can we learn from the history of piracy and the ways in which it intertwines with the history of imperialism and international trade? Drawing on international law, political theory, and popular literature, The Pirate Myth offers an authoritative genealogy of this immortal political and cultural icon, showing that the history of piracy – the different ways in which pirates have been used, outlawed and suppressed by the major global powers, but also fantasized, imagined and romanticised by popular culture – can shed unexpected light on the different forms of violence that remain at the basis of our contemporary global order.

This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of Events in Borneo and Celebes, Down to the Occupation of Labuan, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Journals of James Brooke, Esq., Rajah of Sarawak, and Governof of Labuan, Together With a Narrative of the Operations of H. M.S. Iris Upon the whole, though the standard of morality is not very high, it cannot be considered low, and, in fact, is what might be expected amongst an agricultural and warlike people; and as the women have so decided a preference for the men whose bravery and deeds of arms are notorious, it readily accounts for the mass of the populace being ad dicted to war. Looking, then, at the position of these uncivilised and barbarous tribes with a calm and impartial view, we can scarcely be surprised at their fondness for all warlike pursuits and it may even be doubted whether Europeans might not be found who would take the heads of their dead enemies to gain the smiles and embraces of beauty. Download or read book Narrative of Events in Borneo and Celebes written by James Brooke and published by Rediscovery Books Limited. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Brooke was one of the towering figures of the early 19th century British Empire. As Rajah of Sarawak he carved out his own distant fiefdom on the far-flung islands of the East Indies ( today s Indonesia) where he ruled as Queen Victoria s viceroy with virtually unlimited imperial power and pomp. This fascinating two-volume compilation of Brooke s personal journals shows how he did it. Replete with frank and fascinating first-hand accounts of Brooke s travels around the islands of his realm; of prolonged battles against local pirates and hostile tribesmen; and delicate negotiations with rulers like the Sultan of Brunei, this is a glimpse into the heroic days of empire-building from the pen of a top insider. It is illustrated with many engravings, woodcuts and maps. Vital reading for anyone interested in the British Empire and the peoples of Indonesia.
