Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Love in Manitoba All is well with his mother, for she 18 with God, and the Herr Pastor bared his head. Walking with uncertain steps as in a dream Christian made his way to his home - passed through the little living-room - raised with careful stillness the latch of the room beyond. That vision of his departed happiness was never far from the mirror of Christian's soul, in the long years to comebas he steered the course of his little schooner under the starlit heavens, as he paced the deck of the mighty steamer that bore him to the great solitudes of the west, as he watched that summer evening, the sun smiling behind the spruce-clad hills, beyond the Otter Lake. Clear to-night, as on that fatal night twenty years ago - the wood fire on the hearth casting a flickering light on the tear-stained face of little Ludwig, sleeping in his little cot, and a little table standing by the white covered bed, and there in deeper, calmer, purer rest than sleep Olga. One hand rested upon the white coverlet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Literature

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Literature written by Cynthia Conchita Sugars and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 993 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Literature provides a broad-ranging introduction to some of the key critical fields, genres, and periods in Canadian literary studies. The essays in this volume, written by prominent theorists in the field, reflect the plurality of critical perspectives, regional and historical specializations, and theoretical positions that constitute the field of Canadian literary criticism across a range of genres and historical periods. The volume provides a dynamic introduction to current areas of critical interest, including (1) attention to the links between the literary and the public sphere, encompassing such topics as neoliberalism, trauma and memory, citizenship, material culture, literary prizes, disability studies, literature and history, digital cultures, globalization studies, and environmentalism or ecocriticism; (2) interest in Indigenous literatures and settler-Indigenous relations; (3) attention to multiple diasporic and postcolonial contexts within Canada; (4) interest in the institutionalization of Canadian literature as a discipline; (5) a turn towards book history and literary history, with a renewed interest in early Canadian literature; (6) a growing interest in articulating the affective character of the "literary" - including an interest in affect theory, mourning, melancholy, haunting, memory, and autobiography. The book represents a diverse array of interests -- from the revival of early Canadian writing, to the continued interest in Indigenous, regional, and diasporic traditions, to more recent discussions of globalization, market forces, and neoliberalism. It includes a distinct section dedicated to Indigenous literatures and traditions, as well as a section that reflects on the discipline of Canadian literature as a whole.

Book Dictionary of Manitoba Biography

Download or read book Dictionary of Manitoba Biography written by J.M. Bumsted and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 1999-12-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manitoba has been at the crossroads of many of the important debates and events in Canadian history. From the early fur trade to the Riel Rebellion to the Winnipeg General Strike, Manitobans have frequently played crucial roles in Canadian and sometimes world history. Until now, there has been no comprehensive, contemporary source for information on the many Manitobans who have left their mark on history and society. Dictionary of Manitoba Biography fills this gap, with biographical sketches of over 1700 Manitobans who have made an impact in politics, the arts, sports, commerce, agriculture, and society. It is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and general readers interested in Canadian history. Particular emphasis has been placed on reflecting Manitoba's ethnic and social diversity, and on including men and women who were notable in their own day but have now been forgotten. Many entries also refer the reader to additional references for further reading. More than a reference book, Dictionary of Manitoba Biography is also a fascinating work of history in its own right, which presents the full and colourful scope of over 300 years of people in Manitoba history and social life, from premiers and mayors to nightclub owners and sports heroes.

Book A Two Spirit Journey

Download or read book A Two Spirit Journey written by Ma-Nee Chacaby and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling, harrowing, but ultimately uplifting story of resilience and self-discovery. A Two-Spirit Journey is Ma-Nee Chacaby’s extraordinary account of her life as an Ojibwa-Cree lesbian. From her early, often harrowing memories of life and abuse in a remote Ojibwa community riven by poverty and alcoholism, Chacaby’s story is one of enduring and ultimately overcoming the social, economic, and health legacies of colonialism. As a child, Chacaby learned spiritual and cultural traditions from her Cree grandmother and trapping, hunting, and bush survival skills from her Ojibwa stepfather. She also suffered physical and sexual abuse by different adults, and in her teen years became alcoholic herself. At twenty, Chacaby moved to Thunder Bay with her children to escape an abusive marriage. Abuse, compounded by racism, continued, but Chacaby found supports to help herself and others. Over the following decades, she achieved sobriety; trained and worked as an alcoholism counsellor; raised her children and fostered many others; learned to live with visual impairment; and came out as a lesbian. In 2013, Chacaby led the first gay pride parade in Thunder Bay. Ma-Nee Chacaby has emerged from hardship grounded in faith, compassion, humour, and resilience. Her memoir provides unprecedented insights into the challenges still faced by many Indigenous people.

It is a land of rivers flowing free, Lake-mirrored mountains, rising proud and stem, A land of spreading prairies ocean wide, Where harsh sounds slumber in the hush of gloom, And peace hath brooded with outstretched wings. And here a mighty people shall arise, A peopled nurtured in full liberty; Yet, not forgetful of the mother land, Who scans with kindly eye her child's career, Wafting a blessing o'er the mighty sea. Such be thy future; 0, thou land of hope, Where, in the fear of God and love of home, Thy people shall increase 0, may thy soil Bear many a thinker, many a man of might, Many a statesman fitted to control, Many a hero, fitted to command. Such may thy future be - not great alone, In never-sated commerce, - rather great In all that welds a people heart to heart; Among thy sons may many a leader spring, By whom the ship of State well piloted, Thy haven of wide Empire thou may st reach, An empire stretching from the western wave To where the rosy dawn enflames the seas," About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
