Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Journey Across the Cordillera of the Andes: And of a Residence in Lima, and Other Parts of Peru, in the Years 1823 and 1824 A few unimportant errors have crept in, because the author was unable to superintend the passage of the sheets through the press, and for these the printer is in no way responsible. In order to account in some degree for the decided manner in which the author speaks of the conduct and character of most of the individuals who have signalised themselves in South America, it may be proper to state, that as agent to the contractor for the Peruvian loan, he was brought into connexion with them, and had frequent opportunities of seeing and knowing them. Many public events, to which he has had occasion to refer, have been misunderstood in this country, and these he has endeavoured to present in their true light.
