Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative History of the Town of Cohasset, Massachusetts The hand of an alien might well hesitate to record the private affairs of a conservative New England town, but it is hoped that a Spirit of fairness and his admiration for the town may be relied upon to make up his deficiency in blood connection. Coming to this picturesque Village from the outside world, it has been the writer's fortune to be received into the inside confidence of many hearts. It' has been a labor of love to learn from those who have had the experience of living some of the deep facts of life, and to narrate some of the circumstances Of former lives in this community. Download or read book Cohasset written by David H. Wadsworth and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First settled in the late 1600s and incorporated in 1770, the small seacoast town of Cohasset became an important center for fishing and shipbuilding during the great age of sail. As the maritime era declined in the late 19th century, wealthy Bostonians found Cohasset's cool ocean breezes, the natural beauty of its rockbound shoreline, and its protected coves and harbor ideal for summer recreation. Amateur and professional theater groups flourished in this summer colony. Through vintage photographs, Cohasset covers all this and more-seaside hotels and summer "cottages," village life and old-time merchants, patriarchs and politicians. Personalities abound, such as Philander Bates, a shoemaker who held almost every elected and appointed town office, and financier Clarence W. Barron, who entertained Calvin Coolidge at his Oaks Farm in 1925.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By age thirty-four Captain John Smith was already a well-known adventurer and explorer. He had fought as a mercenary in the religious wars of Europe and had won renown for fighting the Turks. He was most famous as the leader of the Virginia Colony at Jamestown, where he had wrangled with the powerful Powhatan and secured the help of Pocahontas. By 1614 he was seeking new adventures. He found them on the 7,000 miles of jagged coastline of what was variously called Norumbega, North Virginia, or Cannada, but which Smith named New England. This land had been previously explored by the English, but while they had made observations and maps and interacted with the native inhabitants, Smith found that "the Coast is . . . even as a Coast unknowne and undiscovered." The maps of the region, such as they were, were inaccurate. On a long, painstaking excursion along the coast in a shallop, accompanied by sailors and the Indian guide Squanto, Smith took careful compass readings and made ocean soundings. His Description of New England, published in 1616, which included a detailed map, became the standard for many years, the one used by such subsequent voyagers as the Pilgrims when they came to Plymouth in 1620. The Sea Mark is the first narrative history of Smith's voyage of exploration, and it recounts Smith's last years when, desperate to return to New England to start a commercial fishery, he languished in Britain, unable to persuade his backers to exploit the bounty he had seen there.

Book The Hanlon Brothers

Download or read book The Hanlon Brothers written by Mark Cosdon and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2010-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hanlons—a family of six brothers from Manchester, England—were one of the world’s premiere performing troupes in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, yet their legacy has been mostly forgotten. In The Hanlon Brothers: From Daredevil Acrobatics to Spectacle Pantomime, 1833–1931, Mark Cosdon carefully documents the careers of this talented family and enumerates their many contributions to modern popular entertainment. As young men, the Hanlons stunned audiences all over the world with their daring acrobatic feats. After a tragic accident severely injured one brother (and indirectly led to his suicide in a manner achievable only by someone with considerable acrobatic talents), they moved into the safer arena of spectacle pantomime, where they became the rage of Parisian popular theatre. They achieved fame with their uproariously funny and technically astonishing production of Le Voyage en Suisse. After settling permanently in the northeastern United States, they developed two more full-length pantomimes, Fantasma and Superba. The three shows toured for more than thirty years, a testament to their popularity and to the Hanlons’ impressive business acumen. The book’s illustrations—including sketches of their performances, studio photographs of the Hanlons, and posters for all three of their major pantomimes—are essential to the understanding of their work. The Hanlon Brothers is painstakingly researched yet accessible and engaging. Cosdon has managed to provide a thorough and engrossing account of the Hanlons’ lives and careers, which will no doubt help to reestablish their legacy in the world of popular entertainment.
