Book excerpt: This study investigates the stories of bilingual teachers who have multiple selves, seeing themselves as teacher, immigrant, female, mother, non-native speaker. How these teachers identify and develop their identities through narrative construction, positioning and metaphoric presentation is central to this study. The purpose of this study is to explore tensions between multiple conflicting identities of bilingual teachers with a focus on emotions and to examine the ways in which bilingual teachers construct their professional identities through creation of metaphor in relation to their beliefs, assumptions, thoughts, practice, and contexts.This study examines tensions emerged through identity construction and tension management focusing on bilingual teachers' emotional complexity. Unfolding how bilingual teachers' construct their professional identities in their narrative I delineate the multiple selves presented in the narrative such as immigrant identity, teacher identity, acculturator identity, language learner identity, and discuss how the micro and macro contextual factors are relevant to the tensions of multiple selves; for example, the school curriculum and culture, teacher and policy expectation, and teacher' learning experience.This study also explores how bilingual teacher's self-created metaphors reveal their perceptions of selves in terms of roles, responsibilities, and beliefs and assumptions in teaching and learning. Metaphor serves as useful means to present abstract ideas and thoughts and such functions of metaphor is employed in understanding teachers' perceptions of themselves. Through this research, not only do teachers' metaphors reveal their perception of what teacher is in Korea but also the metaphors uncover individual sense of themselves.

Book excerpt: This yearlong study considers how five elementary education preservice teachers were constructing their teacher identities during the time of the study. Data collection began at the end of the participants' junior year of college and continued throughout their On Site Senior Year Program [OSSYP], which included a semester of student teaching. The researcher examined the narratives told by the preservice teachers during six interviews. The analysis of the stories revealed the influences that were impacting how the participants were constructing their teacher identities. A narrative inquiry paradigm framed this study and a thematic analysis was applied to the stories of each participant. The themes identified in the stories provide insights into how the preservice teachers were constructing their teaching identities. The study indicates the crucial role of the university's OSSYP program in supporting identity construction by providing opportunities for the discourses and learning and teaching experiences that facilitate teacher identity work. One insight revealed from the study is the crucial importance of teacher identity discussions in teacher education programs.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is a qualitative narrative study of preservice teachers' construction of urban teaching identities. While studies of urban teacher preparation highlight the need for teacher education programs to foster certain requisite knowledge, dispositions, attitudes, beliefs and skills, more studies are required to illuminate ways in which this need can be operationalized successfully. Based upon sociolinguistic theories of identity construction in which identifying is defined as oral and written storytelling, this study investigated the construction of urban teaching identities primarily narrated by preservice teacher candidates and assisted by a teacher educator/researcher within the specific context of the teacher candidates' experiences lead-teaching in the latter half of a nine-month urban student teaching internship. Utilizing narrative analyses to produce case studies, this study illuminates the ways in which a narrative writing and exchange process supported teacher candidates' reflection, analysis and integration of urban focused-teacher education experiences and knowledge into an urban teaching identity. This dissertation seeks to contribute to educational research concerned with the use of identity and narratives as analytic lenses by revealing the possibilities of utilizing both as generative tools within urban teacher preparation specifically.
