A sparsely populated agricultural society in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Narragansett was transformed in the nineteenth century into one of America's busiest and most popular seaside resorts. A remarkable collection of historic photographs and illustrations will guide the reader through Narragansett's early years into its golden age at the end of the nineteenth century. See the growth of great wooden hotels, the establishment of a railroad, and the summer cottage period. Share the excitement of the rich and the famous as they were drawn to the finest beach in the northeast and the unique Narragansett Casino, which offered dining, dancing, theater, lawn tennis, and bowling. The quaint charm of Narragansett is what sets it apart from other seaside resorts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the largest estuaries on the North Atlantic coast, Narragansett Bay served as a gateway for colonial expansion in the seventeenth century and the birthplace of American industrialization in the late eighteenth. Christopher Pastore presents an environmental history of this watery corner of the Atlantic world, beginning with the first European settlement in 1636 and ending with the dissolution of the Blackstone Canal Company in 1849. Between Land and Sea traces how the Bay’s complex ecology shaped the contours of European habitation, trade, and resource use, and how littoral settlers in turn reconfigured the physical and cultural boundaries between humans and nature. Narragansett Bay emerges in Pastore’s account as much more than a geological formation. Rather, he reimagines the nexus of land and sea as a brackish borderland shaped by the tension between what English settlers saw as improvable land and the perpetual forces of the North Atlantic Ocean. By draining swamps, damming rivers, and digging canals, settlers transformed a marshy coastal margin into a clearly defined edge. The resultant “coastline” proved less resilient, less able to absorb the blows of human initiative and natural variation than the soggy fractal of water and earth it replaced. Today, as sea levels rise and superstorms batter coasts with increasing ferocity, Between Land and Sea calls on the environmentally-minded to make a space in their notions of progress for impermanence and uncertainty in the natural world.

Book The Green the Black and the Deep Blue Sea

Download or read book The Green the Black and the Deep Blue Sea written by Ray Balestri and published by Ray Balestri. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GREEN, THE BLACK, AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA is the debut novel by writing partners Balestri & Celeste introducing Summer Kane, a 17-year-old lifeguard on Narragansett Beach, and Gabriel, a handsome young fisherman working on a fishing trawler out of Point Judith, Rhode Island, who guards a deep secret. Eight years before, Summer lost her only brother in a gigantic freak wave while sailing with her family in Narragansett Bay. Traumatized by the accident, she spent her childhood mostly alone, practicing the magic tricks her brother James had taught her and swimming in the ocean near her house. Equal parts smart and athletic and awkward and nerdy, her self-sufficiency is thrown for a loop when she meets Gabriel, who seems out of place in the company of the thick-necked, rough fishermen of New England. And he appears and disappears with unnerving frequency at odd times at the beach. Summer and Gabriel are instantly drawn to each other, but Summer’s father, a high-ranking government scientist, inexplicably forbids her from seeing him. Summer defies her father and sneaks off to see Gabriel—and stumbles upon his secret. In the adventure that ensues, Summer learns something profound and unexpected about herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narragansett Brewing Company was developed in 1890 by German American descendants in Cranston. Taking advantage of an underground aquifer, the company also made ice for thousands of customers. During Prohibition, the brewery continued to make and deliver ice, as well as a type of soda. After the repeal of Prohibition, the Haffenreffer family purchased the brewery and began recalling previous workers to help restore the brewery and bring it to the highest production rate ever. After World War II, advertising manager Jack Haley shifted the company focus to hospitality with the now famous slogan, "Hi Neighbor, Have a 'Gansett!" Before long, Narragansett was the number one beer in New England. Through vintage photographs, Narragansett Brewing Company chronicles the fascinating history, tragic fall, and exciting rebirth of this local icon.
