Book excerpt: More young people live in India than in any other country and their numbers are projected to increase for decades to come. More than 12 million enter the workforce each year yet few have the skills required for employment. The Government of India has set a target to skill 400 million people by 2022 and established the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) as part of this mission. Through NSDC, government is engaged with private sector partners to advance strategic approaches in skills development by creating public-private partnerships with companies involved in skill training. This is at the centre of a skills business “ecosystem” in India through which all players interact to produce a positive, productive system to skill millions. Momentum for the skills development movement comes not only from the urgent need to provide livelihoods for youth but also from the need to act before a window of opportunity closes. The “youth bulge” in India’s population is poised to deliver a demographic dividend, a transformational boost in economic productivity associated with growing numbers in the workforce relative to dependents. Only through investing in up-to-date education, health and decent work for youth can India harness this dividend. India requires skills to sustain its rapid economic growth, to integrate its large working-age population into the economy in an inclusive and sustainable manner and, ultimately, India needs skills in order to become a global supplier of human resources. This study focuses on 12 skills delivery initiatives led by the private sector and carried out to support the national skills mission of the Government of India. The objective of this study is to generate lessons from India’s experience in skilling, namely to identify and analyse impactful business models and their practices and innovations, to highlight challenges, and to provide insights on how the private sector could contribute even more to skills acquisition and employability.
Download or read book Whither Indian Ocean Maritime Order Contributions to a Seminar on Narendra Modi s SAGAR Speech written by Ambassador Yogendra Kumar and published by KW Publishers Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prime Minister Modi articulated his vision for the future of the Indian Ocean region when he presented the Offshore Patrol Vessel Barracuda to the Mauritian Coast Guard on March 12, 2015, at Port Louis. Such authoritative statement on Indian Ocean by an Indian leader has not been made for a long time. It evoked considerable interest amongst strategic analysts everywhere. Whilst infusing a soft civilisational complexion to India’s envisaged role, it signifies, also, a determination to seek a future of ‘Security and Growth for All in the Region’ – or SAGAR (Hindi for ‘sea’). As Indian Ocean assumes greater significance in the wake of profound geo-strategic shifts and multitudinous challenges to regional stability, there is universal interest in India’s policy approach and capabilities toward the shaping of a stable maritime order. The Indian political leadership is conscious of the evolving strategic situation and its implications for the country’s security and well-being; it, at the same time, feels that the current circumstances are propitious for such a policy to be successful in substantial measure. Its benign external image and US and other countries’, especially regional, support for more proactive engagement provide the wellspring for its determination that the Indian Ocean’s challenges should be met by the countries of the region itself even as the legitimate interests of outside powers can be accommodated. The eminent contributors to this volume analyse the various components of the SAGAR pronouncement and contextualise them against the emerging strategic trends and the spectrum of bilateral and multilateral effort required for its success.

Download or read book ModiNomics Inclusive Economics Inclusive Governance written by Sameer Kochhar and published by Skoch Media Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade of Gujarat and the rise of Narendra Modi first as the Chief Minister and then as a national leader being the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has catapulted the Gujarat model and Narendra Modi into the national and international limelight. In the interim, especially in the last few years, there has been much literature on Gujarat and Narendra Modi. However, much of it is presented from a personality or political perspective. In the run-up to the national elections around May 2014, public interest goes beyond politics and personality. There is interest on some of the pioneering work done in Gujarat around governance and Panchayati Raj. The nation wants to know how Narendra Modi and his team of bureaucrats have been able to make a difference. There is curiosity about the interplay between politics, economy and policy. Crucially, the world wants to know if the Gujarat model is scalable to the national level. However, today’s literature on Gujarat and Modi fails to cover his economics and governance vision. In the hurly-burly of politics, the innovations, the unique models and policies that Gujarat has seen over the last decade seem to be getting overlooked. This book presents the vision behind Modi’s thought process, and the action on the ground in terms of actual field reports and case studies. The book seeks to highlight the economic and development strategies adopted by Modi. The learnings from these would stand other states in good stead. Under Modi, Gujarat stands out for its long-term vision and impeccable execution. Governance is clearly not just about lofty speeches and promises but actual delivery; as is economics. One of the key ideas that the book brings out is that Modi is a proponent of both Inclusive Economics as well as Inclusive Governance. This in a sense is the essence of ModiNomics, a new phenomenon, which is discussed in the book. Sameer Kochhar has been interacting with Gujarat and Gujarat Government officials since 2003. For much of the last decade, the annual Skoch Summits organised by Kochhar have featured case studies on Gujarat’s governance. Books, articles and reports have been done. Field assessments have been carried out. He has captured the voices of the common man. He has also interacted with Modi to know his mind on Gujarat and the nation first hand. This book is an outcome of all the above and tells the Gujarat story in all its riveting details focusing on how Modi has brought about a sea change through his unique brand of ModiNomics.

Download or read book Defeating Poverty Jan Dhan and Beyond written by Sameer Kochhar and published by Skoch Media Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It examines why so many years after Independence, India still has a large number of poor and points towards vote-bank politics as a key culprit in choosing poor policy options that could never deliver optimally. Poverty alleviation measures adopted by Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat, were a greater success compared to other states. The book identifies the key success factors for financial inclusion – a credit and livelihood based approach as well as a gendered view of inclusion; sustainable development; skill development; financial literacy; push for MSMEs; employment and focus on hygiene and health. Thus, making the Modi model, called ModiNomics, as one of the proven approaches that can take financial inclusion to its logical conclusion. The model comes close to the author’s academic work, understanding of ModiNomics and years of research that has a great potential for its replication nationally. Given that the end-objective of financial inclusion is poverty alleviation, at Skoch Group, we have been unyielding in our advocacy of equitable growth with the three critical elements attached to it: financial, social and digital inclusion. The book proposes a model for bringing all these elements together and also suggests ways for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana to be financially viable, selfsustaining and emerge as India’s main weapon for defeating poverty.

Download or read book The Politics of Economic Reforms in India written by Jos Mooij and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-03-24 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic reforms that were initiated in India in the early nineties, are the subject of intense debate. Much of this debate centres around the scope of the reforms, their progress and their impact on growth, poverty reduction and sectoral development. In contrast, this volume focuses on the various political dimensions of the Indian economic reform process. The contributors emphasize the political shaping of the reforms, the politics of implementation, and the impact of reforms on political structures and processes. Two major themes run through the book: the relationship between policy reforms and democratic politics; and the impact of reforms on the quality of governance. Bringing together both theoretical contributions and case studies pertaining to particular states or sectors, this volume provides insights into various important questions including: - How was a radical shift in policy possible in a democracy, where the opposition can easily mobilize resistance? - How can reforms be sustained in a context where the majority of the voters are poor and attracted by handouts, and where political parties are accustomed to attracting voters through populist policies? - Do the reforms contribute to more efficient and inclusive administrative and political governance, or do they lead to new forms of corruption, bureaucratic mismanagement and/or undemocratic politics?
