Download or read book The River written by William Logan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Logan migrated from Canada to Australia around 1855. He married Eliza Collins in Sydney in 1858. Eliza arrived from England in 1856. They initially lived in a rugged sawmilling town north of Sydney where most of their children were born. They then made the 800km journey further north to the Tweed River. Travel was by sailing boat and horseback over mountains. They built the Junction Inn and Eliza Logan Store at Tumbulgum. Alexander was known as Captain Logan and he ferried goods along the river. Eliza's nephew built the first Masonic hall in the district. Descendants lived along the river as sailors, farmers, publicans and shipbuilders. One died while mining in Africa. Another was a successful businessman in Brisbane. William had a cordial factory in Armidale and was a noted photographer. His twin, Lightly Thomas, sailed the Pacific, and had a range of businesses. Joseph Alexander was a shipbuilder. Maggie, a family favourite, and Paul, the youngest, inherited the bulk of Alexander's wealth.

Download or read book Sydney Long written by Sydney Long and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sydney Long (1871-1955) was Australia's foremost Art Nouveau painter and a major Symbolist. He created haunting images of the Australian landscape with decorative, poetic, musical qualities. He broke new ground by populating the landscape with nymphs and fauns, and the sinuous, graceful forms of trees and birds, seeking to convey the weird mystery of the Australian bush. This publication also features the delightful landscapes and cityscapes painted by Long in Australia and England, distinguished by his sensuous and elegant approach. A selection of his prints attests to Long's place as a leading painter-etcher of the 1920s and 1930s. The Spirit of the Land, the first comprehensive survey of Sydney Long's life and work to be published in more than 30 years, provides new research and a fresh appreciation of one of Australia's great artists.

Download or read book Splendid Ghost Moths and Their Allies written by Thomas Simonsen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hepialidae (Ghost Moths) are a family of often spectacular micro-moths. The Australian region is one of the hot spots for hepialid diversity and the fauna is divided into three groups: primitive Hepialidae with small, often overlooked species; oxycanine Hepialidae, containing the large and poorly known genus Oxycanus and its allies; and finally the hepialine Hepialidae, which span from stunning, green Splendid Ghost Moths in the genus Aenetus, to the enormous moths in the genera Zelotypia and Abantiades (which include some of the most impressive insects in the world), to smaller, drab pest species in the genus Oncopera. Splendid Ghost Moths and Their Allies is the first work to provide comprehensive information about the taxonomy, biology, diversity and morphology of all 70 Australian hepialine Hepialidae species, including the descriptions of 15 species and one genus new to science. Each species is illustrated with colour photographs of males and females and drawings of the genitalia, and the book also contains identification keys to genera and species. Distribution maps and detailed information on where each species is found are included, as well as a species richness map for the group in Australia. This book is an invaluable reference for moth enthusiasts, professional entomologists and nature conservationists alike.
