Download or read book Napoleon Xylophone written by Frank Lambert and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A changeling padded out from the shadows at the far end of the cavern. It had taken on the form of a lioness, with fur as black as a starless night. It walked towards Ackx and began to lick its master's face. Ackx opened his eyes and something like a smile crossed his face. Something like the smile a crocodile makes while eating its lunch... Napoleon Xylophone hates his name; that’s why his friends call him Zam. He doesn’t know it yet, but he is set to become a hero – a hero with a walking disability. When adventure comes knocking, Zam doesn’t let his disability get in the way of fighting the changelings, wytes and gargoyles that come to life in the underworld beneath Newcastle. Not when he has a wheelchair that can fly, a ghost for a best friend and a grandfather who has created a new life form that allows whoever wears it to speak to Time... Napoleon Xylophone is an inspirational work of fantasy fiction that will appeal to 12-16 year old children. The main aim of the book is to give disabled children a voice to help them express how they fit into society. As Zam, one of the few disabled superheroes in fiction, travels through the pages of his story, he shows the difficulties disabled children encounter every day. Zam is more than a teenager in a wheelchair with an amazing story to tell; he is a hero anyone can look up to.

Download or read book Music and Fuzzy Logic written by Hanns-Werner Heister and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-21 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unfolds the manifold, complex and intertwined relations between Fuzzy Logic and music in a first comprehensive overview on this topic: systematically as an outline, as completely as possible, in the aspects of Fuzzy Logic in this relation, and especially in music as a process with three main phases, five anthropological layers, and thirteen forms of existence of the art work (Classics, Jazz, Pop, Folklore). Being concerned with the ontological, gnoseological, psychological, and (music-) aesthetical status and the relative importance of different phenomena of relationship between music and Fuzzy Logic, the explication follows the four main principles (with five phenotypes) of Fuzzy Logic with respect to music: similarity, sharpening 1 as filtering, sharpening 2 as crystallization, blurring, and variation. The book reports on years of author’s research on topics that have been only little explored so far in the area of Music and Fuzzy Logic. It merges concepts of music analysis with fuzzy logical modes of thinking, in a unique way that is expected to attract both specialists of music and specialists of Fuzzy Logic, and also non-specialists in both fields. The book introduces the concept of dialectic between sharpening and – conscious – “blurring”. In turn, some important aspects of this dialectic are discussed, placing them in an historical dimension, and ending in the postulation of a 'musical turn' in the sciences, with some important reflections concerning a “Philosophy of Fuzzy Logic”. Moreover, a production-oriented thinking is borrowed from fuzzy logic to musicology in this book, opening new perspectives in music, and possibly also in other artistic fields.

Download or read book La Petite Mort written by Eli Wilde and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-01-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I don’t know how long I slept, time no longer held any meaning. The lust for blood awakened me, always images of that. Rufus Hobster is a vampire. He writes poetry. Through his poetry Rufus shares what it feels like not being human, what it feels like to kill a human and what it feels like to love a human. La Petite Mort is his recollection of the early days when he first became a vampire, a time when he was nothing more than a rabid beast. It also concerns his life years later when he meets Elise, The Girl Who Synchronised Death. Despite the way Elise makes God weep, Rufus cannot leave her side and it is not until she abandons him that his psychosis guides his life more so than the virus running through his veins. Inside my head music played a reminder of everything I had lost, and I fell asleep weeping lines of red too frightened to call upon God for help. La Petite Mort spans a number of genres, including dark romance, horror, philosophy and fantasy. It will appeal to fans of thought-provoking and gothic poetry, as well as fans of Eli’s previous books – Cruel, Four Days, Neophyte and his first poetry collection The Lines.

Download or read book The Pegnitz Junction written by Mavis Gallant and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these dazzling stories, Mavis Gallant immerses us in the lives of ordinary people swept up in the upheaval and displacement that followed in the wake of the Second World War. A bitter yet stubbornly pragmatic woman prepares for what promises to be another disastrous Christmas with her mother, her aunt, and her would-be-war-hero uncle. Engaged to another man, a woman travels to Paris with her older lover and his young son. A wife recollects her complicated relationship with the refugee woman who had a brief affair with her husband. Small mercies form the backbone of a friendship between an actress and a police commissioner. A career soldier, now discharged and stranded in France, makes his first adjustments to life as a civilian. In elegant, diamond-sharp prose, Gallant distills the vanities, absurdities, and contradictions that lie at the heart of human behavior and fashions stories of rare power and insight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate collection of stories by 'one of the great short-story writers of our time' (Michael Ondaatje) 'Gallant is funny, exacting and stern - in fact, an old fashioned moralist ... luminescent, subtle and lasting, Gallant's chronicles of internal and external exile are a fitting tribute to a diasporic century' Guardian 'Stories are not chapters of novels. They should not be read one after another, as if they were meant to follow along. Read one. Shut the book. Read something else. Come back later. Stories can wait' Mavis Gallant In 1950, THE NEW YORKER accepted one of Mavis Gallant's short stories for publication and she has since become the one of the most accomplished and respected short story writers of her time. Gallant is an undisputed master whose peerless prose captures the range of human experience in her sweeping portraits set in Europe in the second half of the last century. An expatriate herself, her stories deal with exile, displacement, of love and of estranged emotions, but they are never conventional. This collection of fifty-two stories, written between 1953 and 1995, is timeless, to be savoured and re-read.
