Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grande Armee of Napoleon Bonaparte is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest fighting forces ever deployed. With it the French scored a streak of historic victories that gave them an unprecedented grip on power over the European continent. At its peak it was made up of 680,000 men, a huge multi-national force of officers, infantry and cavalry, artillery and support services masterminded by a superior and highly flexible system of corps, divisions, brigades and regiments, commanded by officers in which Napoleon placed a huge degree of trust and autonomy to operate within the outlines of his strategic objectives. Looking closely at how this military machine was constructed and mobilized, Napoleon's Military Machine Operations Manual examines all aspects of the Grande Armee, from individual soldiers, what they wore, ate, slept in and were paid, to the chain of command, recruitment and training, intelligence and comms, and logistics and battle tactics. The legacy of Napoleon’s army is assessed, as is how his organization and management initiatives influenced national armies around the world in ways that can still be seen today.

Based on contemporary training manuals, regulations and orders, Napoleon's Infantry Handbook details the everyday routines and practises which governed the imperial army up to the Battle of Waterloo and made it one of history's most formidable military machines. ??Through years of research, Terry Crowdy has amassed a huge wealth of information on every aspect of the infantryman's existence, from weapons drill and maintenance, uniform regulations, pay, diet, cooking regulations, hygiene and latrine digging, medical care, burial of the dead, how to apply for leave and so on. This remarkable book fills in the gaps left by campaign histories and even eyewitness memoirs, which often omit such details. This book doesn't merely recount what Napoleon's armies did, it explains how they did it. The result is a unique guide to the everyday life of Napoleon's infantry soldiers.

Book Aide to Military Instruction 1884

Download or read book Aide to Military Instruction 1884 written by L. De T. Prevost and published by . This book was released on 2004-07 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable manual, published in 1884, bridges a gap in military theory and practice between the Napoleonic Wars and the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Although its author, a Major in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and a former instructor at Aldershot, modestly describes it as a series of notes strung together for purposes of instruction it is far more than that. Prevost examines contemporary military methods and compares different armies, building up a global picture of the military arts in the 1880s. He has practical descriptions (and illustrations) of everything from building a bivouac to digging a latrine. The chapters deal with elementary tactics, living in the field (including building trenches - which would come in useful twenty years later), and the three arms (infantry, cavalry and artillery). The tactical instruction and commentary looks at the infantry in the attack, the use of guards (advance, flanking and rear), together with outposts and march disciplines. The next section of the book deals with a subject familiar to all soldiers in all ages: minor operations, obstacles, demolitions and river crossing. This is an exceptional book which is well illustrated with over 130 drawings and 10 plates, which covering, among much else, the defence of villages and woods, and fortified houses.
