He replied, at Arcola, not Lodi. At Arcola I was slightly wounded; but at Lodi no such circum stance occurred. Why do you ask? Do you think me Melee said be, laughing. I begged to assure him of my thorough conviction of the con travy, which was too well known to be doubted; and that it was merely to solve a difference of opinion which had occurred between some of as English who had not the means of procuring at St. Helena any books to satisfy us at which of the two. It had occurred, that I had taken the liberty to ask him. Those things, said be, with a smile, are not 'worth mentioning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon in Exile, or a Voice From St. Helena, Vol. 1 of 2: The Opinions and Reflections of Napoleon on the Most Important Events in His Life and Government, in His Own Words The few alleviations which I had it in m power to offer, Napoleon repaid by the condesvension witi which lie hou ored nu ind my necessary professional intercourse was soon increased into an intimacy, if I may spzak of inti maev With such a personage. In fact, in the seclusion of lniigwood, he soon almost entirely laid aside the emperor, With those about him, he. Conversed familiarly on his past life. And sketched the characters, and detailed the anecdotes which are here presented faithfully to the reader. The un reserved manner in which he s okc of everything, can only be conceived b those who Eeard him; and though where his own condyuct was questioned, he had a natural human leaning towards himself - still truth appeared to be his principal, if not his only object. In the elincation of character he was peculiarly fehcitous. His mind seemed to concentrate its beams on the object he wished to eluci dau, and its prominent features became instantly discerni ble. The intimate acquaintance which he necessarily pos sessed with all the great characters who figured in Europe for the last thirty years, gave to his Opinions and observa tions more than ordinary interest: indeed from no other source could such authentic information be acquired. Not withstanding the interval which elapsed since many of the occurrences alluded to took place, and the distracting occu pations which must have employed his mind, it was won dertul to see how freshly he remembered every transaction which became the subject of inquiry. If there was any tnmg more extraordinary than this, it was the apathy with which he perused the libels which were written on him ne seemed inspired with a conviction of posthumous fame, beyond the reach of contemporary depreciation. But per haps a knowledge of the man may be better acquired from seeing him as he reall was during the first three years of his residence at St. Elena, than from any speculative deduction-as he appeared, spoke, acted, and seemed to feel, the reader shall have him. It may perhaps be only right to add, that some of the observations or arguments on particular subjects were committed to paper from Na poleon's own dictation. Book The Rise Of Napoleon Bonaparte

Download or read book The Rise Of Napoleon Bonaparte written by Robert Asprey and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-06 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since 1821, when he died at age fifty-one on the forlorn and windswept island of St. Helena, Napoleon Bonaparte has been remembered as either demi-god or devil incarnate. In The Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, the first volume of a two-volume cradle-to-grave biography, Robert Asprey instead treats him as a human being. Asprey tells this fascinating, tragic tale in lush narrative detail. The Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte is an exciting, reckless thrill ride as Asprey charts Napoleon's vertiginous ascent to fame and the height of power. Here is Napoleon as he was-not saint, not sinner, but a man dedicated to and ultimately devoured by his vision of himself, his empire, and his world.

Download or read book Napoleon s Exile written by Patrick Rambaud and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “colorful” novel about the fall of one of history’s most notorious figures—and the defeat that would come to define him (Publishers Weekly). It is 1814, and Napoleon Bonaparte retreats to Paris following the debacle of his Russian invasion. Once there, the leader is met with more resistance—a plot to restore a royal to the throne of France succeeds and a humiliated Napoleon is forced to abdicate and go into exile. Octave Senecal, Napoleon’s loyal aide and savior, tells the tale of their journey south through the angry, mob-filled countryside to Elba, a tiny island off the coast of Tuscany. Horribly bored by this turn of events, Napoleon passes the time gambling with his mother, spearing the occasional tuna with local fishermen, and fretting constantly that secret agents and murderers surround him. He also secretly plans his escape and return to glory. With captivating historical detail and “the allure of an epic,” this novel by the award-winning author of The Battle brings to life the complex man behind the renowned general, and offers a fitting send-off to a legend (Anita Brookner).
