Book Naples in 1799 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Naples in 1799 Classic Reprint written by Constance H. D. Stocker Giglioli and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naples in 1799 N writing the following pages the intention of the author has been to present to English readers a sketch of the men who formed the Neapolitan Republic of I 799, together with sufficient outline of their surroundings, and of the condition of the kingdom of Naples at the close of the eighteenth century, to make their position clear. The writer can lay no claim to original research, and has merely endeavoured to bring within the knowledge of English readers, who have not the means of studying the ample Italian literature of this subject, that side of the drama of I 799 which English literature has been too apt to ignore. This drama has been generally regarded in England as a mere background to an episode in the life of Nelson and when it has been handled at all has often been handled with heat, often with gross unfairness and gross ignorance, or at best presented in chips and frag ments which do no justice to the subject, however they may serve to illustrate the argument of the moment - an argument which generally assumes Nelson to be the person principally concerned. By means of contemporary evidence, letters, diaries, and so forth, with which the patient industry and research of Italian writers have so amply furnished the present generation, the chief actors in those scenes live, move. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Neapolitan Jacobins: Documents Relating to the Suppression of the Jacobin Revolution at Naples, June, 1799 The only serious imputations which have ever been made against Nelson's conduct in a public capacity are those which are associated with the part played by him in the suppression Of the jacobin rising at Naples in 1799, and to which Southey unfortunately gave currency throughout the English-speaking world in a book which, by reason Of the brilliancy Of its style and the power of its narrative, has taken the foremost place in popular estimation among the biographies Of our great naval hero. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelson at Naples: A Journal for June 10-30, 1799; Refuting Recent Misstatements of Captain Mahan and Professor J. K. Laughton Before uttering one word of comment on Captain Mahan's work, I have to acknowledge a very grave mis take on my part that he has pointed out - that of quoting as Hamilton's own a remark which Dumas intercalates into one of Hamilton's letters. The fact that other writers should have verified and repeated my quotation furnishes some proof that there is a ready pitfall in the manner in which the letter is printed but it greatly increases my regret that, in sinning, I should have been a cause of sin. And now, having made my shrift, I must deal with Captain Mahan's attack quite frankly. The task is distasteful, but his language leaves me no alter native, and it will therefore be best to finish off the matter at once. Book Revolutionary Feminist Narratives and Perspectives on the Italian Risorgimento

Download or read book Revolutionary Feminist Narratives and Perspectives on the Italian Risorgimento written by Sharon Worley and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study extends from the Neapolitan Revolution of 1799 to the first unification of Italy in 1861, and presents insights into the work of feminist authors who responded to the Italian Risorgimento in their writings, including novels, poetry and non-fiction political analyses. The narratives of these women form a cohesive view of emerging feminism in the nineteenth century in response to the Italian Risorgimento. A number of American and British women who lived in Italy (Emma Hamilton, Margaret Fuller and Elizabeth Barrett Browning), as well as Italian women (Eleonora Fonesca Pimentel and Cristina Belgiojoso), participated directly in the developing events of the Risorgimento revolutions for Italian independence and unification, while British, French and American authors who travelled to Italy, including Mary Shelley, George Sand, Marie d’Agoult (Daniel Stern) and Edith Wharton joined their cause and rallied support for democracy, civic justice and gender equality. These authors promoted gender equality through their feminist narratives and political analyses of the Italian Risorgimento.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joanna of Naples The author of the following Tale deems some apology due to the public, for offering them so slight a production, founded on a subject so fertile in materials; for Joanna the First of Naples, the high-minded and ill-fated proto type of Mary Stuart, bloomed and perished at an epoch in the world's history, which can scarcely be exceeded in interest by any given period. It presents a theme worthy of the de parted Scott, or the living James. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naples: Past and Present I have designed this book not as a guide, but as supplementary to a guide. The best of guide-books - even that of Murray or of Gsell-Fels - leaves a whole world of thought and knowledge untouched, being indeed of necessity so full of detail that broad, general views can scarcely be obtained from it. In this work detail has been sacrificed without hesitation. I have omitted reference to a few well-known place, usually because I could add nothing to the information given in the handbooks, but in one or two cases because the considerations which they raised lay too far from the thread of my discourse. I have thrown together in the form of an appendix such hints and suggestions as seemed likely to assist anyone who desires wider information than I have given. It is far, very far, from being perfect,1 but a vast number of additional offices has been opened in all directions, and though we still see the public writers at their tables in the streets, there are fewer of them, and their business is decidedly slacker than it was in the olden days.
