Book Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples

Download or read book Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples written by Bonnie Alberts and published by Self Publisher. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Napoli Unplugged Guide to Naples is not your typical guidebook. Written for the intrepid traveller seeking a more profound experience, the NU Guide delves deep - deep enough to catch the cultural heartbeat of the city. It's a must-have for anyone with more than just a passing interest in Naples and you'll want to revisit the book again and again, long after your return home. There's also plenty here to satisfy the wanderlust of armchair travellers. Written by four women united by a common passion - Napoli - who love to wax lyrical about their adoptive city, it makes you feel you're seeing Naples through the eyes of your best friends. Their own enthusiasms are multiple: art, archaeology and architecture; history and mythology; music, dance and theatre; food and wine, the islands and the beach - even shopping - and each subject has its narrative moment in the spotlight. The prose is embellished by many beautiful photographs, urban sketches and plein-air paintings by artists who couldn't resist the siren call of Parthenope. From the parallel city hidden below Naples' bustling streets to the summit of Vesuvius, the authors explore the city - one of the oldest in the Western world, the bay - surely the most stunning, and a little further afield in Campania. Rambles Through the City explores Naples by the neighbourhood - its historic and municipal centres as well as its hill districts and is enhanced by creative cartography to orient the reader; Outings in the Outskirts dives into the Bay of Naples and a bit beyond - the Vesuvius Excavations, the Phlegraean Fields and the glories of the Amalfi Coast; Ventures in a Different Vein feeds the mind and delights the senses with a section dedicated entirely to Naples' history, and finally, the authors outline an immersion course in the city's music, theatre and food and wine cultures. Each section is equipped with practical advice on transport, opening hours, essential numbers - and the book is topped off with a thematic index offering the reader other pathways of discovery into the city. Visit Naples, discover Napoli!

Book excerpt: During the 1990s, Naples' left-wing administration sought to tackle the city's infamous reputation of being poor, crime-ridden, chaotic and dirty by reclaiming the city's cultural and architectural heritage. This book examines the conflicts surrounding the reimaging and reordering of the city's historic centre through detailed case studies of two piazzas and a centro sociale, focusing on a series of issues that include heritage, decorum, security, pedestrianization, tourism, immigration and new forms of urban protest. This monograph is the first in-depth study of the complex transformations of one of Europe's most fascinating and misunderstood cities. It represents a new critical approach to the questions of public space, citizenship and urban regeneration as well as a broader methodological critique of how we write about contemporary cities.

Book Naples at Table

  • Author : Arthur Schwartz
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2013-08-27
  • ISBN : 0062319132
  • Pages : 792 pages

Download or read book Naples at Table written by Arthur Schwartz and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Schwartz, popular radio host, cookbook author, and veteran restaurant critic, invites you to join him as he celebrates the food and people of Naples and Campania. Encompassing the provinces of Avellino, Benevento, Caserta, and Salerno, the internationally famous resorts of the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Ischia—and, of course, Naples itself, Italy's third largest and most exuberant city—Campania is the cradle of Italian-American cuisine. In Naples at Table, Arthur Schwartz takes a fresh look at the region's major culinary contributions to the world—its pizza, dried pasta, seafood, and vegetable dishes, its sustaining soups and voluptuous desserts—and offers the recipes for some of Campania's lesser-known specialties as well. Always, he provides all the techniques and details you need to make them with authenticity and ease. Naples at Table is the first cookbook in English to survey and document the cooking of this culturally important and gastronomically rich area. Schwartz spent years traveling to Naples and throughout the region, making friends, eating at their tables, working with home cooks and restaurant chefs, researching the origins of each recipe. Here, then, are recipes that reveal the truly subtle, elegant Neapolitan hand with such familiar dishes as baked ziti, eggplant parmigiana, linguine with clam sauce, and tomato sauces of all kinds. This is the Italian food the world knows best, at its best—bold and vibrant flavors made from few ingredients, using the simplest techniques. Think Sophia Loren—and check out her recipe for Chicken Caccistora! Discover the joys of preparing a timballo like the pasta-filled pastry in the popular film Big Night. Or simply rediscover how truly delicious, satisfying, and healthful Campanian favorites can be—from vegetable dished such as stuffed peppers and garlicky greens to pasta sauces you can make while the spaghetti boils or the Neapolitans' famous long-simmered ragu, redolent with the flavors of meat and red wine. Then there's the succulent baked lamb Neapolitans love to serve to company, the lentils and pasta they make for family meals, baked pastas that go well beyond the red-sauce stereotype, their repertoire of deep-fried morsels, the pan of pork and pickled peppers so dear to Italian-American hearts, and the most delicate meatballs on earth. All are wonderfully old-fashioned and familiar, yet in hands of a Neapolitan, strikingly contemporary and ideal for today's busy cooks and nutrition-minded sybarites. Finally, what better way to feed a sweet tooth than with a Neapolitan dessert? Ice cream and other frozen fantasies were brought to their height in Baroque Naples. Baba, the rum-soaked cake, still reigns in every pastry shop. Campamnians invented ricotta cheesecake, and Arthur Schwartz predicts that the region's easily assembled refrigerator cakes—delizie or delights—are soon going to replace tiramisu on America's tables. In any case, one bite of zuppa inglese, a Neapolitan take on English trifle, and you'll be singing "That's Amore." A trip with Arthur Schwartz to Naples and its surrounding regions is the next best thing to being there. Join him as he presents the finest traditional and contemporary foods of the region, and shares myth, legend, history, recipes, and reminiscences with American fans, followers, and fellow lovers of all things Italian.

Book Four Days of Naples

Download or read book Four Days of Naples written by Aubrey Menen and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1943, Naples lay devastated by incessant bombardment from Allied planes. The city, under an iron occupation by the Germans, was without food. During the bombardment, the famed scugnizzi, the street boys, of Naples grew increasingly exasperated by the passiveness of their elders. Known for their daring, verve, and enterprise, the boys staged an incredible revolt against the Germans on September 28, 1943. Dragging furniture into the roadways, they built barricades and shot at the enemy with stolen guns, inspiring many adults and Italian army deserters to join their ranks. Three days and hundreds of deaths later, the Germans left the city for good. The author, who heard the story of those historic four days from the scugnizzi themselves in 1948, recounts the battle.
