  • Publisher : Robert Tell

Download or read book Nanobe written by Robert Tell and published by Robert Tell. This book was released on 2014-12-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When 6 hospital patients die mysteriously from Rapidly Progressive Dementia, Harry Grouch is hired to investigate the cause. Is it a biological accident involving a new and mysterious pathogen, or is it murder using a unique murder weapon, a nanobe: a tiny organism that may or may not be alive but, if living, would be the smallest form of life, 1/10 the size of the smallest known bacteria? "You can't kill something that isn't alive!" That shocking discovery is the key to this compelling whodunit. A mysterious pathogen is infecting neurosurgical patients at Bard Memorial Hospital. Dementia and rapid death follow. The microorganism causing this disease is surviving all known sterilization techniques. Why isn't the disinfection process used by the Operating Rooms destroying this astonishing bug? Bard Memorial Hospital, it's Administrator, Abner Fabian, it's Laboratory Director, Mickey Barrie, and other key doctors on the staff, will be familiar to readers of my earlier work, "The Medical Director's Divorce, and Other Stories." In "Nanobe," these characters are further developed as important players in helping Harry Grouch to unravel the mystery of the neurosurgical patient deaths. Things look bleak for the hospital. The County Medical Examiner is accusing the hospital of a malpractice cover-up, while the doctors argue furiously over the many theories about what is happening. The Police Chief suspects foul play. The media and public have condemned the hospital and doctors. Harry Grouch and Judy Pacas rush to the rescue. They tour the laboratories, monitor surgery, stroll the patient units at 2 am, and befriend hospital staff to dig up the facts. It's up to them to figure out why patients are dying. Is it a mini-epidemic that, once understood, can be scientifically explained and controlled? Or is a creative killer using this newly discovered biological entity, this nanobe, as a murder weapon. And if it's murder, what's the motive, how is it being accomplished, and who are the suspects? All of this leads to a juicy, hospital-based detective thriller unlike any other on most library and bookstore crime shelves.

Book The Limitations of God

  • Pages : 91 pages

Download or read book The Limitations of God written by Ted Johnson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning, there was God. This is the starting point for all else that you will explore. This simple sentence is the most powerful definition for who, where, when, why, and how. This is a journey that takes you through all the vantage points of life and existence. This forbidden territory is a place where we look at creation and the by-products and merge an explanation via science, the supernatural, and humanity. The dogma on either side of this age-old debate between science and scripture is addressed and possibly resolved. The aforementioned encapsulates what you will read, while stimulating deep emotion on a topic that churns with controversy and conflict. This is a book that will make you look at yourself and your personal convictions. As I discuss issues related to our self-worth and purpose, other doors are opened to questions yet answered. This book introduces both the creator and creation from the very beginning. You will find support for both. For the believer, it will serve as a tool to strengthen and reinforce your conviction. For those who are not yet convinced that a creator exists, I offer evidence that illustrates life as a plan and not an accident. I have also incorporated into the book, several human-interest events all based on truth and real-life events. All things written, leading to the final reality that has a somewhat poetic ending. An ending that personally brings a sense of understanding and peace that is spiritually calming.

Book Organic Matter and Mineralisation Thermal Alteration Hydrocarbon Generation and Role in Metallogenesis

Download or read book Organic Matter and Mineralisation Thermal Alteration Hydrocarbon Generation and Role in Metallogenesis written by M. V. Glikson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates the direct link between petroleum, the derivative of organic materials, and ore bodies. The studies reported here highlight the common factors between hydrocarbons and mineral concentrations, such as heat sources, migration routes and likely traps. It emphasizes the role that hydrothermal processes play in the genesis of both petroleum generation and ore-grade mineralization. The presence of oil residue in the form of bitumen and pyrobitumen in all sediment-hosted ore bodies throughout the geological record is a testimony to their common diagenetic history. Studies of active hydrothermal systems reported in this book describe the processes and derivatives in these environments, linking hydrocarbon generation and mineral precipitation. A comparison with residual oil in many ore bodies and mineralization occurrences in the geological record, as depicted in this book, can be explained in terms of processes in active hydrothermal systems. One of the most interesting and challenging recent discoveries, that of living nano-bacteria, is reported in this book. The `nanobes', as they have recently been dubbed, have been suggested as the link between the living and non-living matter. The resemblance of these nano-organisms to fossil forms observed in a Martian meteorite have been reported recently in the media. Likewise the similarity to nano-bacteria in Archaean sediments is highlighted in two chapters of the book.

Book History of Nanotechnology

Download or read book History of Nanotechnology written by Madhuri Sharon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific knowledge of nanoscience and nanotechnology is regarded to be a modern sciencethat evolved after Feynman’s concept was formulated in the 1950s. However, Faraday and other scientists in the 19th century showed the science behind the small and its relation to optical properties. And it is now accepted that knowledge of using nanoparticles prevailed during the medieval period as well. This book takes the readers on a fascinating journey writing the history of nanotechnology based on the evidence of existence from the prehistoric period right up to the contemporary times. Nature utilized nanotechnology during the origin and expansion of the universe and especially in the evolution of living beings on our planet. Early civilizations in different parts of globe fabricated and used materials without having perception of their actual size. This unique historical view systematically evaluates the development of various applications of nanotechnology through the ages and the science behind it. Some of the issues covered include: • How old is nanotechnology? • Pre-historic evidence of knowledge of nanotechnology • Nanotechnology in ancient India • Ayurvedic Bhasma as nanomedicine • Mayan’s knowledge of nanotechnology • Nanotechnology during the Roman empire and medieval period • European knowledge in the 19th century • Modern and contemporary history of nanotechnology This book is compilation of existence of scientific knowledge even of the people who existed before there were schools, universities and organized teaching. The author has scoured literature dating back to Mayan ... as well as historical observations A systematic evaluation of development of various applications of nanotechnology and the science behind it is presented in this book under following headings -How old is Nanotechnology -Pre-historic Evidence of Knowledge of Nanotechnology -Nanotechnology in Ancient India -Ayurvedic Bhasma as Nanomedicine, its use prevails even today -Mayan’s Knowledge of Nanotechnology -Nanotechnologists Flourished During Roman Empire and medieval period -European Nano knowledge That Led to Faraday Understands of Gold Nanoparticles -Contemporary History of Nanotechnology

Book Mapping Reality

Download or read book Mapping Reality written by Willie Maartens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We must clearly distinguish between reality (the territory), and what we perceive to be reality (the map of the territory)! In our journey through life, we need something to guide us, to give us reassurance that we are on the right track. Modern science has done its best to take that reassurance away from us, telling us that there is no destination, no purpose, in life, and that in effect our lives are an accident of 'Nature'. Religion, too, has become equally unhelpful: it has become dogmatic, sectarian, and self-serving. We have lost the core, the real message, of religion, but we still need true spirituality. Indeed, we need a map to the Truth.

Book excerpt: Science and technology have had more than their share of the good, the bad, and the bogus. Alfred William Lawson, the designer of the first airliner, believed that two types of creatures lived within the brain Menorgs, A which were the mental organizers responsible for all good things, and Disorgs, A which infect all cells with disorganization. Chonosuke Okamura collected and catalogued what he thought were tiny men and animals, all 1/100-inch long, which most geologists think are actually mineral grains. Peter Fong found that the expression happy as a clamA had a scientific basis when he tested the effects of Prozac on fingernail clams. The dashing figure of dinosaur hunter Roy Chapman Andrews was the model upon which Indiana Jones was based. Physician John Brinkley believed that consuming goat glands would restore youth and virility. In keeping with the format of the popular Most WanteduA Series, this new volume comprises sixty top-ten lists. These include worst ideas by great scientists, most unlikely inventors, greatest unsolved mysteries, most ridiculous attempts at flight, biggest hoaxes, most suppressed inventions, and top UFO sightings. Science's Most Wantedushows how throughout history, mankind has tried, often wildly unsuccessfully, to come to grips with lifeas biggest questions."

Book Honest Nutrition

Download or read book Honest Nutrition written by Ira Edwards and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honest Nutrition is an attempt to do what textbooks and hundreds of diet books do not. Nutrition textbooks do not tell you that this science is in its infancy, nor how many "scientific" claims are open to question, based on faulty research or simple hunches. If they include some of the biochemical and physiological context of nutrition, they still omit financial, social and political aspects. After attempting to understand the prejudice against vitamins and supplements among the industrial-medical-political Big Brother (IMP-BB) and the lack of evidence for most alternatives, there is still some useful information. Opposing philosophies are denoted as SUPR (SUrgery-PRescription orientation) and UTHR (Unconventional Therapies, Herbal Remedies.) Honest Nutrition uses a large alphabetical section to give easy access to useful information about many diseases and nutritional therapies. Honest Nutrition includes information about hormone resistance diseases, cryptic infections as a cause of "unknown etiology" diseases, and the effect of nutrition on behavior and criminality. Some claims: 1. Obesity always involves hormones, sometimes with positive-feedback loops, which is why "Just eat less and exercise" seldom works. 2. A major factor in arterial disease is viscous blood, resulting in part from a lack of omega-3 fat. Cholesterol lowering does not help. 3. Some heart attacks may be due to hormonal effects, involving the hormone ouabain, and preventable with an extract of the herb strophanthus. 4. Many, or most North Americans suffer serious lack of nutrients: vitamin D, magnesium, and plant nutrients. The author challenges the medical establishment to examine their doctrines and learn how to help people suffering from nutritional diseases. Many technical terms are included. The non-scientific reader is asked to skip over these, to gain a useful knowledge of nutrition.
