Book excerpt: Kentucky native Nancy Culpepper boldly left home to attend school in Massachusetts, married a Yankee, and raised her son in the Northeast. “One day I was feeding chickens and listening to Hank Williams and the next day I was expected to know what wines went with what,” she tells her husband, Jack. Yet no matter where she travels, her rural southern heritage is never far from her thoughts, her habits, and her heart. Nancy is on a lifelong quest to understand her place in the world. Returning home to the family farm, she searches for photographic evidence of an ancestor bearing her own name. Still in her jeans, she brings home strange ideas and an assertiveness she learned up north. Always adventurous, Nancy travels far and wide–searching, seeking. The narrative sweep of her life traverses the turbulent sixties, the Vietnam War, the eighties and the foreboding death of John Lennon, and finally the new millennium–when a self-assured Nancy finally emerges. These humorous and often touching stories recount her courtship and marriage to Jack, her relationship with her precocious son, and the deep, loving bond between her parents, Spence and Lila Culpepper. Eventually Nancy’s marriage is threatened by a cultural divide that plagued her and Jack from the start. But when she inherits the Culpepper family farm and discovers more pieces of her ancestral puzzle, she realizes that her life is assuming its proper shape. Later, standing on a lonely mountain in England, she sees the world from a surprising perspective. Bestselling author Bobbie Ann Mason’s prizewinning Nancy Culpepper chronicles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, The Southern Review, and other distinguished literary anthologies. She has compiled these stories into one definitive collection, which includes the novella Spence + Lila, two new, never-before-published stories, and one Pushcart Prize winner. Heartfelt and thought-provoking, Nancy Culpepper is a poignant depiction of change and growth in a modern-day heroine.

Book A Modern Ninety Five

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nancy A Almodovar, Dr, PhD
  • Publisher : Resource Publications (CA)
  • Release : 2008-06
  • ISBN : 9781498250788
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book A Modern Ninety Five written by Nancy A Almodovar, Dr, PhD and published by Resource Publications (CA). This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In 1517 an Augustinian monk by the name of Martin Luther nailed ninety-five statements to the door at Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. This was not a means of open debate but a desire to discuss scholarly objections to church practices of the time. Five centuries later, many of the same errors and heresies have crept back into the evangelical church. A modern ninety-five theses, couched in new terms for a new generation, require scholarly debate once again. Through modern-day apostles and prophets, and through the elitists within the evangelical church, the doctrine of buying God's grace and favor has been propagated through appeals for seed offerings and ""atonement-day"" donations in order to garner God's blessings. Pragmatic approaches to preaching the gospel through such movements as the seeker-driven models have moved the focus of the message of Christ and the worship of God from being God-centered to human-centered. Sound historical doctrines, such as the Trinity, have been relegated to the sidelines in favor of unity and ecumenicalism with Oneness preachers. In the words of Martin Luther, ""Out of love for the truth and the desire to bring it to light,"" the following propositions need to be discussed in their entirety by church leaders, pastors, and laypeople alike. Endorsements: The format of A Modern Ninety-Five is an eye-catcher, given the connection to what Brother Martin Luther did for the Western churches. Nancy hails from the charismatic tradition and the value of her testimony and experience--including the anguish and hubris--brings an important factor to the table. I most strongly believe the time has come when Christ's Church must speak with increased visibility to these matters and confront the issues. In short, we need something akin to this to confront the modern dangers of Montanism, enthusiasm, extra-biblical revelations, and ""Word of Faith"" movements. --D. Philip Veitch, former Navy Chaplain About the Contributor(s): Nancy A. Almodovar received her BA in theology from Trinity Theological Seminary. After her conversion at age nineteen, Nancy's father, Peter F. Shore Sr., began to aid her in biblical studies through the works of Reformed and evangelical ministers such as D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, J. C. Ryle, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Owen, and Jonathan Edwards. Through personal experience within the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement, Word of Faith teachings and Apostolic/Prophetic promoters, Nancy brings firsthand knowledge of the dangers of such teachings. Nancy and her husband, Rev. Roberto, cofounded Silent Cry Ministries, which heralds the doctrine of grace in the New York City area as well as in Ghana (West Africa). She is also the author of The Journey: From Faith to Doubt to Faith Again and The Courage Factor.

Download or read book Practicing Imperfection written by Charles T. Dupree and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To know life is to look at it honestly. Practicing Imperfection is a candid exploration of one person's move from being addicted to praise and perfection to becoming more comfortable in his own skin. Through humor and a healthy dose of sarcasm, Practicing Imperfection shares the journey of Episcopal priest Charles Dupree in developing a consistent, sustainable, meditation practice. Dupree describes how the ancient practice of meditation can bring about a healthier, happier, more awakened existence, and what, for him, has been a healing balm in a busy world and demanding vocation. Drawing from childhood experiences, a recent sabbatical, and the experiences of serving as a parish priest, Dupree examines some of life's larger questions. As an Episcopal priest, he is clearly religious, but also whole-heartedly spiritual. Uniting those seemingly conflicted qualities, he helps us see that we are all looking for the same thing: freedom from that which no longer serves us. In our modern world, it is difficult to carve out the space to examine what is going on in our lives and minds; meditation is a way to create that space. This is a book for people who want to be released from the pressures of being better, smarter, or more successful, and those who want to lighten up and be a fuller participant in life.

Book excerpt: It's time to look seriously at child's play. In 2017, award-winning author-photographer Nancy Farese visited Bangladesh to photograph the Rohingya refugee crisis, and she saw firsthand the toll of extreme trauma and the most violent tendencies of humankind. She also saw, everywhere, on the edge of every frame, children at play, following their instinctual drive to adapt, socialize, and heal, in defiance of the darker forces all around them. This documentary photography book by Farese focuses on child's play in fourteen countries. Play is where we learn creativity, collaboration, and the emotional flexibility to survive in a chaotic and ambiguous world. She invites us to consider how this universal activity-and the concept of "free play" as a self-motivated and joyful exploration-is threatened by the unrelenting forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting.Potential Space offers a global view of a mundane activity that powerfully shapes who we are both as individuals, and as a society. Play is also where we lose ourselves in time yet find ourselves most fully alive. However, in our modern world free play is under threat, redefined by the converging forces of technology, consumerism, and even overparenting. Farese looks at children's play through a wide lens, providing a look within, and beyond, the challenges of our time toward a more hopeful and resilient perspective. We know it when we see it, anywhere in the world; the beauty of play is that it becomes both a window and a mirror, providing an opening for empathy, and peace.

I have seen hell.” —Patricia Neal Larry King, world-famous radio and television personality, has asked the talented, the beautiful, the wise, and the rich a question all of us have pondered: How would you like to be remembered after your death? In telling and moving reflections, often leavened by self-deprecating humor, these celebrities look back on their lives, their ambitions, their mistakes, and their accomplishments. The contributions range from pithy one-liners by Yogi Berra (“It’s over.”), Dave Barry, George Carlin, and Liz Smith (“Excuse my dust!”); to inspired sketches by Stephen King and Peter Falk; to candid reflections from Don Shula, Fred Rogers, and Chevy Chase; to hilarious rants from Margaret Cho and Tommy Lee; and a last request by Arthur Hailey. Often surprising and always memorable, REMEMBER ME WHEN I'M GONE is a timeless collection by stars who will live on forever.

Though Charlotte’s skill with plants is bringing her success, cultivating something deeper with people—particularly her handsome neighbor Coop—might be more of a challenge. Now the entire Wheelwright clan is making its annual summer pilgrimage to the homestead, including Charlotte’s mother, Helen, who brings a heavy heart as she confronts a betrayal that threatens her sense of place and her sense of self.
