Book excerpt: The PhyloCode is a set of principles, rules, and recommendations governing phylogenetic nomenclature, a system for naming taxa by explicit reference to phylogeny. In contrast, the current botanical, zoological, and bacteriological codes define taxa by reference to taxonomic ranks (e.g., family, genus) and types. This code will govern the names of clades; species names will still be governed by traditional codes. The PhyloCode is designed so that it can be used concurrently with the rank-based codes. It is not meant to replace existing names but to provide an alternative system for governing the application of both existing and newly proposed names. Beneath this veil of “free commerce” – where workers are paid only for a portion of their workday, and buyers and sellers in the marketplace face each other as “equals” – lies a foundation of immense inequality. Yet workers have always rebelled. They've organized unions, struck, picketed, boycotted, formed political organizations and parties – sometimes they have actually won and improved their lives. But, Marx argued, because capitalism is the apotheosis of class society, it must be the last class society: it must, therefore, be destroyed. The efficiency with which the name space can be managed is strongly influenced by the adopted naming convention. Structured name spaces are shown to simplfy name space management from both an administrative and system viewpoint. Formulae have been derived which allow one to quantitatively measure the effect of the distributed name server configuration on a given client's level of performance. In general, the cost of a name server query can be reduced by distributing replicated copies of name server database entries in a way that exploits the locality of clients' reference patterns.
