Output has recovered to the pre pandemic level, inflation has fallen below 6 percent, and expectations remain anchored. Official reserves, at 4.7 month of imports in September, exhibit adequacy consistent with the peg to the rand. Prospects are brightened with discovery of oil and gas reserves. At the same time, Namibia is poised to benefit from the global pivot to green energy through its signature Green Hydrogen Project. Meanwhile, the challenge of improving public sector efficiency and reducing the large wage bill, not only for the sake of preserving debt sustainability, but also for the Namibian people to benefit the most from these new developments, remains paramount. Elections are scheduled for 2024.

Book The Long Shadow of German Colonialism

Download or read book The Long Shadow of German Colonialism written by Henning Melber and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2024-07-18 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1884 to 1914, the world's fourth-largest overseas colonial empire was that of the German Kaiserreich. Yet this fact is little known in Germany and the subject remains virtually absent from most school textbooks. While debates are now common in France and Britain over the impact of empire on former colonies and colonising societies, German imperialism has only more recently become a topic of wider public interest. In 2015, the German government belatedly and half-heartedly conceded that the extermination policies carried out over 1904-8 in the settler colony of German South West Africa (now Namibia) qualify as genocide. But the recent invigoration of debate on Germany's colonial past has been hindered by continued amnesia, denialism and a populist right endorsing colonial revisionism. A campaign against postcolonial studies has sought to denounce and ostracise any serious engagement with the crimes of the imperial age. Henning Melber presents an overview of German colonial rule and analyses how its legacy has affected and been debated in German society, politics and the media. He also discusses the quotidian experiences of Afro-Germans, the restitution of colonial loot, and how the history of colonialism affects important institutions such as the Humboldt Forum.

Book International Law in Namibia

  • Author : Zongwe, Dunia Prince
  • Publisher : Langaa RPCIG
  • Release : 2019-04-22
  • ISBN : 9956550442
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book International Law in Namibia written by Zongwe, Dunia Prince and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2019-04-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with the knowledge necessary to fully understand how international law carved the history and life of Namibia. It observes that Namibia has benefited from and contributed to international law in a way that shaped that country’s political and socio-economic development and to an extent that few other countries experienced. For many a year since Namibia achieved Independence on 21 March 1990 and established the Faculty of Law at the University of Namibia in 1992, students and lecturers have relied on materials from South Africa, despite the fact that Namibian law has since then grown apart from its South African heritage. It is high time for lecturers and students in Namibia to teach and learn with a textbook that analyses international law from the distinct standpoint of Namibia and that views the nation’s legal interactions with other states through its own prism! And this textbook aims to do just that. Through its 19 chapters, this book informs readers about international law, its sources, international treaties, Namibian statehood, dispute resolution, the use of force, human rights, Namibia’s economic relations with the outside world (including the Southern African Customs Union), and the law of the sea. Namibian courts have in their own way followed the rules of international law scrupulously, but – as this book shows – international law nonetheless remains the source of Namibian law that lawyers apply the least. Accordingly, this book underlines the significance, the practical utility, and the relevance of international law in the unique Namibian context.

Book Sands Of Silence

Download or read book Sands Of Silence written by Peter Hathaway Capstick and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 1991-10-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From renowned hunting writer Peter Hathaway Capstick comes the most lavishly illustrated, historically important safari ever captured in print. Capstick journeyed on safari through Namibia in the African spring of 1989. This was a nation on the eve on independence, a land scorched by sun, by years of bitter war. In these perilous circumstances, he commences what is surely the most thrilling safari of his storied career. He takes the reader to the stark landscape that makes up the Bushmen’s tribal territories. There, facing all kinds of risks, members of the chase pursue their quarry in a land of legend and myth. In this first person adventure, Capstick spins riveting tales from his travels and reports on the Bushmen’s culture, their political persecution, and the Stone Age life of Africa’s original hunter-gatherers. In addition, the author explains the economic benefits of the sportsman’s presence, and how ethical hunting is a tool for game protection and management on the continent. Featuring one hundred striking color images from leading African wildlife photographer Dr. M. Philip Kahl, Sands of Silence: On Safari in Namibia superbly illustrates Capstick’s return to the veld and perfectly captures life and death in the “land of thirst.”

Book Colonial Aspects of Finnish Namibian Relations 1870 1990

Download or read book Colonial Aspects of Finnish Namibian Relations 1870 1990 written by Leila Koivunen and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection re-examines the long history of Finnish-Namibian relations through the lens of colonialism without colonies as well as anti-colonialism. The book argues that although Finland never acquired colonies, Namibia was once treated in the areas of culture and knowledge formation in a manner now recognised as colonial. Namibian people’s ways of being in the world was transformed when the Finnish Missionary Society started its work in Owambo in 1870 and introduced Christianity and European modes of education, medicine, material culture and social practices. In time, cultural colonialism faded and during the Namibian struggle for independence from South African rule in 1966–1990 Finns took an actively anti-colonial approach. The book was written as a collaborative effort of Namibian, Finnish and South African scholars.
