Download or read book Bluest Nude written by Ama Codjoe and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ama Codjoe’s highly anticipated debut collection brings generous light to the inner dialogues of women as they bathe, create art, make and lose love. Each poem rises with the urgency of a fully awakened sensual life. Codjoe’s poems explore how the archetype of the artist complicates the typical expectations of women: be gazed upon, be silent, be selfless, reproduce. Dialoguing with and through art, Bluest Nude considers alternative ways of holding and constructing the self. From Lorna Simpson to Gwendolyn Brooks to Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, contemporary and ancestral artists populate Bluest Nude in a choreography of Codjoe’s making. Precise and halting, this finely wrought, riveting collection is marked by an acute rendering of highly charged emotional spaces. Purposefully shifting between the role of artist and subject, seer and seen, Codjoe’s poems ask what the act of looking does to a person—public looking, private looking, and that most intimate, singular spectacle of looking at one’s self. What does it mean to see while being seen? In poems that illuminate the tension between the possibilities of openness and and its impediments, Bluest Nude offers vulnerability as a medium to be immersed in and, ultimately, shared as a kind of power: “There are as many walls inside me / as there are bones at the bottom of the sea,” Codjoe writes in the masterful titular poem. “I want to be seen clearly or not at all.” “The end of the world has ended,” Codjoe’s speaker announces, “and desire is still / all I crave.” Startling and seductive in equal measure, this formally ambitious collection represents a powerful, luminous beginning.

Book After Emily Two Remarkable Women and the Legacy of America s Greatest Poet

Download or read book After Emily Two Remarkable Women and the Legacy of America s Greatest Poet written by Julie Dobrow and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the extraordinary mother and daughter who brought Emily Dickinson’s genius to light. Despite Emily Dickinson’s world renown, the story of the two women most responsible for her initial posthumous publication—Mabel Loomis Todd and her daughter, Millicent Todd Bingham—has remained in the shadows of the archives. A rich and compelling portrait of women who refused to be confined by the social mores of their era, After Emily explores Mabel and Millicent’s complex bond, as well as the powerful literary legacy they shared. Mabel’s tangled relationships with the Dickinsons—including a thirteen-year extramarital relationship with Emily’s brother, Austin—roiled the small town of Amherst, Massachusetts. After Emily’s death, Mabel’s connection to the family and reputation as an intelligent, artistic, and industrious woman in her own right led her to the enormous trove of poems Emily left behind. So began the herculean task of transcribing, editing, and promoting Emily’s work, a task that would consume and complicate the lives of both Mabel and her daughter. As the popularity of the poems grew, legal issues arose between the Dickinson and Todd families, dredging up their scandals: the affair, the ownership of Emily’s poetry, and the right to define the so-called "Belle of Amherst." Utilizing hundreds of overlooked letters and diaries to weave together the stories of three unstoppable women, Julie Dobrow explores the intrigue of Emily Dickinson’s literary beginnings. After Emily sheds light on the importance of the earliest editions of Emily’s work—including the controversial editorial decisions made to introduce her singular genius to the world—and reveals the surprising impact Mabel and Millicent had on the poet we know today.

Book The Ekphrastic Encounter in Contemporary British Poetry and Elsewhere

Download or read book The Ekphrastic Encounter in Contemporary British Poetry and Elsewhere written by David Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a wide range of ekphrastic poems, David Kennedy argues that contemporary British poets writing out of both mainstream and avant-garde traditions challenge established critical models of ekphrasis with work that is more complex than representational or counter-representational responses to paintings in museums and galleries. Even when the poem appears to be straightforwardly representational, it is often selectively so, producing a 'virtual' work that doesn't exist in actuality. Poets such as Kelvin Corcoran, Peter Hughes, and Gillian Clarke, Kennedy suggests, relish the ekphrastic encounter as one in which word and image become mutually destabilizing. Similarly, other poets engage with the source artwork as a performance that participates in the ethical realm. Showing that the ethical turn in ekphrastic poetry is often powerfully gendered, Kennedy also surveys a range of ekphrastic poets from the Renaissance and nineteenth century to trace a tradition of female ekphrastic poetry that includes Pauline Stainer and Frances Presley. Kennedy concludes with a critique of ekphrastic exercises in creative writing teaching, proposing that ekphrastic writing that takes greater account of performance spectatorship may offer more fruitful models for the classroom than the narrativizing of images.

This book was released on 2010-06-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally this book was centered on identifying only one hundred women until Mrs. Michelle Obama became the first African American First Lady; thus it became apparent that she had to be added to this list thereby she became the one hundred and one most influential women in my life. I can truly begin and end appropriately when I refer to the women who had a profound effect on me and my life extends from my little white house on a dirt road in Bulloch County Georgia to the White House located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC. I am not sure just how many of the readers will receive my reference to scripture as I will often refer to but I want to start with a quote: “give honor to where honor is due; and tribute tow where tribute is due.” These one hundred and one women stories and lives have certainly influenced me, guided me, taught me and help to prepare me to live and have a wholesome and wealthy life whereby it is has contributed to my entire wellness. Wholeness, wealth and wellness come in a variety of ways; however, often times they are not easily recognized because they are not in a materialistic appearance which can be touched or perceived. It is now my esteemed pleasure to introduce you to the women of honor who contributed too much to me. I was able to look beyond my economic, social, financial circumstances into a new realm of endless possibilities.

Book Emily Dickinson Influential Women in History

Download or read book Emily Dickinson Influential Women in History written by Various and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a collection of essays and excerpts on the famous American poet and influential woman of history, Emily Dickinson. Highly recommended for students of literature and others with an interest in the life and work of this seminal writer. Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (1830–1886) was an American poet commonly hailed as being among the most important figures in American poetry. Not much is known about her personal life, but evidence suggests that this is because she spent most of her time isolated from other people. Those who lived around her claimed that she took to wearing only white apparel and rarely left her bedroom in her later years. Despite being a prolific writer producing a corpus of over 1,800 poems, only 10 were published during her lifetime. Her poetry was considered unusual for her time, incorporating a variety of odd features and breaking many of the conventional rules.

Download or read book Lessons on Expulsion written by Erika L. Sánchez and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning and hard-hitting new voice in contemporary American poetry The first time I ever came the light was weak and carnivorous. I covered my eyes and the night cleared its dumb throat. I heard my mother wringing her hands the next morning. Of course I put my underwear on backwards, of course the elastic didn't work. What I wanted most at that moment was a sandwich. But I just nursed on this leather whip. I just splattered my sheets with my sadness. —from “Poem of My Humiliations” “What is life but a cross / over rotten water?” Poet, novelist, and essayist Erika L. Sánchez’s powerful debut poetry collection explores what it means to live on both sides of the border—the border between countries, languages, despair and possibility, and the living and the dead. Sánchez tells her own story as the daughter of undocumented Mexican immigrants and as part of a family steeped in faith, work, grief, and expectations. The poems confront sex, shame, race, and an America roiling with xenophobia, violence, and laws of suspicion and suppression. With candor and urgency, and with the unblinking eyes of a journalist, Sánchez roves from the individual life into the lives of sex workers, narco-traffickers, factory laborers, artists, and lovers. What emerges is a powerful, multifaceted portrait of survival. Lessons on Expulsion is the first book by a vibrant, essential new writer now breaking into the national literary landscape.

Book Feminist Literacies 1968 75

Download or read book Feminist Literacies 1968 75 written by Kathryn Thoms Flannery and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s and early 1970s, ordinary women affiliated with the women's movement were responsible for a veritable explosion of periodicals, poetry, and manifestos, as well as performances designed to support "do-it-yourself" education and consciousness-raising. Kathryn Thoms Flannery discusses this outpouring and the group education, brainstorming, and creative activism it fostered as the manifestation of a feminist literacy quite separate from women's studies programs at universities or the large-scale political workings of second-wave feminism. Seeking to break down traditional barriers such as the dichotomies of writer/reader or student/teacher, these new works also forged polemical alternatives to the forms of argumentation traditionally used to silence women, creating a space for fresh voices. Feminist Literacies explores these truly radical feminist literary practices and pedagogies that flourished during a brief era of volatility and hope.
