And by her recent standards, things are actually looking up. Lycanthropes don’t faze Anna. Doctoring a wolf pack outside Grundy, Alaska, is the closest thing to home life she’s known in years. But hitching a ride to Anchorage with long-absent pack member Caleb Graham—that’s a risk. Part of her itches to whack his nose with a newspaper. The rest is trying unsuccessfully to keep her own paws off every delicious inch of him. The problem is—Caleb employs his lupine tracking abilities as a notquite- legal bounty hunter, and Anna is suspicious of both him and his profession. On the run from her past, with old problems closing in, she’d like to stay far, far away from anybody with connections to the law. Caleb, however, seems determined to keep her close. Are his intentions noble, or is he working a more predatory angle? Anna’s been dreaming of returning to a semi-normal life, but now she’s experiencing a strange new urge . . . to join Caleb in running with the wolves.

Book The Nature of the Beast

Download or read book The Nature of the Beast written by Carys Crossen and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The werewolf in popular fiction has begun to change rapidly. Literary critics have observed this development and its impact on the werewolf in fiction, with theorists arguing that the modern werewolf offers new possibilities about how we view identity and the self. Although this monograph is preoccupied with the same concerns, it represents a departure from other critical works by analysing the werewolf’s subjectivity/identity as a work-in-progress, where the fixed and final form is yet to be arrived at – and may never be fully accomplished. Using the critical theories of Deleuze and Guattari and their concepts of ‘multiplicities’ and ‘becoming’, this work argues that the werewolf is in a state of constant evolution as it develops new modes of being in popular fiction. Following on from this examination of lycanthropic subjectivity, the book goes on to examine the significant developments that have resulted from the advent of the werewolf as subject, few of which have received any sustained critical attention to date.

Book The Last Carnival

Download or read book The Last Carnival written by J. Lilly and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-10-08 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Spring of 19- I took a sabbatical from the University of C-, over-the-seas branch, Kawagawa, Cipan where I had been working towards the postponement of a doctoral degree in the dual fields of comparative histrionics and cryptophilology. The cause of my departure: that I would pursue an ancillary degree elsewhere, although some may have observed that I had rather quietly suffered a nervous breakdown. The simple, more economical pretext, however, was that I was maddeningly overworked and shamefully underemployed. Repatriated, I finally took a job in S. Hollywood with a talent agency founded by a wealthy, enlightened Japanese autodidact of Western Culture, or "Sei Bun" as Kennichi-"Ken" to his friends-Chibita-"Chibi" by the same friends-liked to call it, who claimed, but could never quite document, a connection with his own royal family. Ken had entered the film business with the intention of "Making Movies That Make The Differences And Represent A Goal Of Universal Culture," a letterhead slogan that fell just short of the felicitous. He idolized the silver-screen impresario Alexandr Korda, and would have emulated him. Accordingly, Kenchan had acquired a reputation for his readiness to buy, at cut-rate prices, the rights to stories or, should we say, fragments of stories, incomplete or in a state of hopeless disarray, ones such as other agencies would have refused as unrepresentable. In principle we operated much like corporate marauders, but in the reverse: We bought up under-producing literary properties and then reassembled them into "marginally" profitable entities.

Long may he tickle our fancy."—Kermit Lynch, author of Adventures on the Wine Route “Long a fan of Bonny Doon, it cheered me to find Randall Grahm's writing just as irreverent and delicious as his approach to wine.”—Kathleen Flinn, author of The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry “Randall Grahm is the Willy Wonka of the wine world, and Been Doon So Long is intelligent, insightful, and mischievous. It's a work of genius.”—Jamie Goode, author of The Science of Wine "If Donald Barthelme had studied philosophy and oenology he might have written like Randall Grahm. He's a provocateur, a punster, a philosopher, and jester. As entertaining as Grahm is, he also manages to edify, ultimately surprising us with contrarian common sense and a flamboyant defense of tradition."—Jay McInerney, author of Bacchus and Me and A Hedonist in the Cellar
