Book Transylvania s History a to Z

Download or read book Transylvania s History a to Z written by Patricia Furstenberg and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-20 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Transylvania's History A to Z, a collection of 100-word stories sprinkled with breathtaking photographs, Patricia Furstenberg uses the confining rules of the 100-word story form to stirringly capture Transylvania, Romania's historical and geographical region. Transylvania's unspoiled natural beauty, its tumultuous history, and the people who touched it are depicted in this book. Written as snapshots, tall tales, and descriptive narratives, these 100-word stories are the espresso of creative writing. A - Z, 100-Wors Stories are inspired by Transylvania's history, from the Paleolithic Period to WW1 Each 100 Words Story is followed by a brief historical reference The unique beauty of a 100-word story is in the way the words are strung together, each one a gem, and in the spaces left between the words, and between the sentences. So much can be told, with little words. It is a challenge for the writer, and a thrill for the reader, as each time the tale is read, a new detail springs to mind. "As an armchair historian, I love researching lost tales, traveling, exploring hidden corners, and unearthing new facts, forgotten characters, or hidden clues. I love to give them a voice and to bring them into the light in my tales. Be it people, animals, or the land and its architecture, no detail is too small, no voice is too soft. What was once overlooked now brings history alive in my historical or contemporary fiction books and short stories, such as the 100-Word Stories based on the history of Transylvania." Book Joyful Trouble

Book excerpt: Kindle UK Storyteller 2017 Top Reviewed Take home an unbelievable and humorous true story of an incredible dog and how he found his true, yet unexpected calling. You will love the moving tale of Joyful Trouble, a dog whose love for humans went beyond any human-dog connection. When a Great Dane arrives in a WWII Navy base nobody expects him to win everybody's hearts, although breaking some rules along the way. "A story that reads like a movie." Now with illustrations. "Patricia Furstenberg paints a charming portrait of the bond between a small girl and boy and their much-loved Grandad. This book takes readers on an unbelievable journey, tackling universal themes and voicing animal rights and the importance of fighting for what is right." Enjoy a heartwarming, too-good-to-be-true tale of friendship and dedication, an engaging and fun read about a gentle giant which never used his tail as a weapon, Joyful Trouble: Based on the True Story of a Dog Enlisted in the Royal Navy by Patricia Furstenberg. "It is Parade Day, a very special day to remember a very special Royal Navy South Atlantic Ordinary Seaman. The parade was in honor and in memory of Joyful Trouble, a kind dog and an Ordinary Seaman, a Great Dane with a purpose. Ana and her younger brother, Tommy, are excited about the parade, but more than anything they want to hear the story about Joyful Trouble because their grandfather, a great storyteller, had once been an Ordinary Seaman, and it had been his responsibility to look after and look out for this Great Dane. The dog had an affection towards men of the sea and had caught the Navy's and the town's attention on more than one occasion due to his wanderings and traveling the train along with the seamen.Patricia C. Furstenberg's young people's short chapter book, Joyful Trouble, is an amusing and fascinating fable, a story telling the life of one Great Dane in his role as an Ordinary Seaman in the Second World War. The story unravels as the grandfather, who, as a young man, was given the care and responsibility of this Great Dane, tells the story to his young grandchildren. It sparkles with good, old fashioned family time and family storytelling, treasured childhood moments that sadly get lost too often in this fast-paced world. The young reader will quickly warm up to the young children in the story as they learn about a very special Great Dane as well as a vital part of their grandfather's past. This is a compassionate and heart-warming story. Reviewed by Emily-Jane Orford for Reader's Favorite "When I started this book, I was ready to cry to my heart's content, considering this book was based on a dog. But instead, I came across a sweet, humorous and fun read. This book is based on a true story of Able Seaman "Just Nuisance", the only dog ever to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. He served with HMS Afrikander, a Royal Navy naval base in Simon's Town, South Africa, during the WWII.Patricia has written a beautiful and oh so refreshing tale of friendship, loyalty, and love.In the book, the story of "Joyful Trouble", a mischievous but a very friendly and helpful Great Dane is narrated by a granddad to his 2 grandchildren, 9-year-old Anna and 5-year-old Tommy.Trouble was a friend of the entire Simon's town, especially the seamen. So much so that, he followed them everywhere, and even helped them. He was a quick-witted and (unintentionally!!!) funny dog. I couldn't stop from laughing at some of Trouble's actions, that finally got him enlisted in the Royal Navy. Even the part how Trouble got his name, was so amusing.Being a dog person myself, I absolutely loved this book. I laughed with this book and shed a tear or two as well. Overall this was a quick and very delightful read. Even though this book is tagged as a children's book, I would recommend it to all. " (Amazon Review)

Book The Stone Fields

Download or read book The Stone Fields written by Courtney Angela Brkic and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she was twenty-three years old, Courtney Angela Brkic joined a UN-contracted forensic team in eastern Bosnia. Unlike many aid workers, Brkic was drawn there by her family history, and although fluent in the language, she was advised to avoid letting local workers discover her ethnicity. Her passionate narrative of establishing a morgue in a small town and excavating graves at Srebenica is braided with her family's remarkable history in what was once Yugoslavia. The Stone Fields, deeply personal and wise, asks what it takes to prevent the violent loss of life, and what we are willing to risk in the process.

Book excerpt: In his travels through Croatia, Tony Fabijancic saw a world of peasants, shepherds and fishermen irrevocably giving way to the new reality of a modern European state. With a deft and sure touch, he records moments that capture the lingering spirit of the old world even as the former fabric of this place is unravelling forever. The author’s profound familiarity with the "extraordinary regionality" of Croatia leads to memorable images of the country, and to sketches and unhurried ruminations on its people, its landscapes, kitchens, cities, and coastlines.

Book Explorations in Corpus Linguistics

Download or read book Explorations in Corpus Linguistics written by Renouf and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations in Corpus Linguistics contains selected papers from the eighteenth International Conference on English Language Research on Computerised Corpora (ICAME 18). The papers give a broad overview of the latest activities in corpus linguistics. Issues associated with the creation of corpora are raised, topics ranging from corpus design, to problems of rare data acquisition and data protection, to the relative merits of corpora and free text collections. The main body of the volume is devoted to reports on the analysis of corpora. Several papers offer synchronic descriptions of aspects of modern language usage, in both spoken and written corpora. Some corpora are 'general' in content; those deriving from specialised textual domains include parallel corpora of international varieties of English and of learner language. The diachronic dimension of corpus-based study is also represented, in the examination of some modern-day grammatical features from a historical perspective, and by socio-pragmatic and sociolinguistic studies of diachronic corpus data. The principal aim of English corpus linguistics as reflected here is to describe language in use; there are also cases where such description forms a basis for the development of resources and tools, including specialised taggers, an Internet-based grammar, a glossary, and software to identify semantic relations and diachronic change within corpora.

Book Collected Letters of a Renaissance Feminist

Download or read book Collected Letters of a Renaissance Feminist written by Laura Cereta and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance writer Laura Cereta (1469–1499) presents feminist issues in a predominantly male venue—the humanist autobiography in the form of personal letters. Cereta's works circulated widely in Italy during the early modern era, but her complete letters have never before been published in English. In her public lectures and essays, Cereta explores the history of women's contributions to the intellectual and political life of Europe. She argues against the slavery of women in marriage and for the rights of women to higher education, the same issues that have occupied feminist thinkers of later centuries. Yet these letters also furnish a detailed portrait of an early modern woman’s private experience, for Cereta addressed many letters to a close circle of family and friends, discussing highly personal concerns such as her difficult relationships with her mother and her husband. Taken together, these letters are a testament both to an individual woman and to enduring feminist concerns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brave and unnerving debut collection about life in wartime In 1991 a war began in Yugoslavia that would last four years and claim more than a quarter of a million lives. In her harrowing fiction debut, Courtney Angela Brkic puts a human face on the lost, the missing, the exiled, and the invisible. She brings to life perpetrators and victims, soldiers and civilians, diplomats and human rights workers: a man trapped in a cellar witnesses the erasure of his city—and of his identity—as it is shelled by unseen bombers; a sniper posted in a building overlooking a city street takes comfort in the arbitrary rules he creates to choose his targets; a husband and wife who have been brutalized in detention centers pick up the pieces of their marriage. The characters in Stillness are caught up in forces not of their own making. Rather than being uniformly powerless, however, they create choices where none should logically exist, and by doing so they defy the challenge of war. Brkic, who was a researcher and translator in Croatia, and a forensic archeologist in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the war, has written a powerful work of the imagination that somehow illuminates unimaginable events.
