Ils soulignent surtout que, malgré les peurs, jamais nous n’avons été aussi bien armés pour lutter contre elles. Une réflexion originale sur le combat mondial contre les épidémies et sur les moyens dont nous disposons pour les éradiquer. Patrice Debré est professeur d’immunologie à l’université Pierre-et Marie-Curie-Paris-VI. Il a été chef de service, directeur d’un institut de recherche à l’hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière et ambassadeur de France chargé de la lutte contre le sida et les maladies transmissibles. Il a notamment publié une monumentale biographie de Louis Pasteur qui fait référence. Jean-Paul Gonzalez est médecin virologue, directeur de recherche à l’Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD, Marseille) et senior advisor pour les maladies émergentes et la biosécurité auprès de l’Agence Metabiota (Washington, DC). Il a dirigé le Centre international de recherches médicales de Franceville, au Gabon.

La diversité de mon auditoire me conduisait, d'autre part, à donner, à certaines parties, un développement et une gravité qui contrastent avec les raccourcis et la vivacité de la majeure partie de l'oeuvre.
