Download or read book Cold adapted Yeasts written by Pietro Buzzini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yeasts are a versatile group of eukaryotic microorganisms, exhibiting heterogeneous nutritional profiles and an extraordinary ability to survive in a wide range of natural and man-associated ecosystems, including cold habitats. Cold-adapted yeasts inhabit numerous low-temperature environments where they are subjected to seasonal or permanent cold conditions. Hence, they have evolved a number of adaptation strategies with regard to growth and reproduction, metabolic activities, survival and protection. Due to their distinctive ability to thrive successfully at low and even subzero temperatures, cold-adapted yeasts are increasingly attracting attention in basic science and industry for their enormous biotechnological potential. This book presents our current understanding of the diversity and ecology of cold-adapted yeasts in worldwide cold ecosystems, their adaptation strategies, and their biotechnological significance. Special emphasis is placed on the exploitation of cold-adapted yeasts as a source of cold-active enzymes and biopolymers, as well as their benefits for food microbiology, bioremediation and biocontrol. Further, aspects of food biodeterioration are considered.

Download or read book Mix Tape from 3035 written by Chad Kroll and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever had a tape or CD stuck in a player and had trouble getting it out? Well, the author had that happen. I didn't worry because I like 80's music, so I let it play. It became a problem when the music stopped and a voice started. Yes, I did check to see if I had other problems, and NO I was not hearing things like the radio. I went at the stupid thing with a screwdriver and almost got impaled for the effort. So I started listening and writing things down when they got interesting. Apparently things like Werewolves do exist, along with a whole list of were creatures, but those are not the ones to worry about. See, the person on the tape wanted to tell everyone that there is an impending war we need to get ready for. There are REAL Vampires in our midst. Apparently, they are busy walking around as doctors, lawyers, politicians, dentists, some soldiers, morticians, medical examiners; you name it, all in preparation for a war. The war is between two mystic races - Dragons and Vampires! Get ready friends!

Download or read book National Parks beyond the Nation written by Adrian Howkins and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The idea of a national park was an American invention of historic consequences marking the beginning of a worldwide movement,” the U.S. National Park Service asserts in its 2006 Management Policies. National Parks beyond the Nation brings together the work of fifteen scholars and writers to reveal the tremendous diversity of the global national park experience—an experience sometimes influencing, sometimes influenced by, and sometimes with no reference whatever to the United States. Writer and historian Wallace Stegner once called national parks “America’s best idea.” The contributors to this volume use that exceptionalist claim as a starting point for thinking about an international history of national parks. They explore the historical interactions and influences—intellectual, political, and material—within and between national park systems in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia, Antarctica, Brazil, and other countries. What is the role of science in the history of these preserves? Of politics? What purposes do they serve: Conservation? Education? Reverence toward nature? Tourist pleasure? People have thought differently about national parks at different times and in different places; and neat physical boundaries have been disrupted by wandering animals, human movements, the spread of disease, and climate change. Viewing parks around the world, at various scales and across national frontiers, these essays offer a panoptic view of the common and contrasting cultural and environmental features of national parks worldwide. If national parks are, as Stegner said, “absolutely American,” they are no less part of the world at large. National Parks beyond the Nation tells us as much about the multifarious and changing ideas of nature and culture as about the framing of those ideas in geographic, temporal, and national terms.
Download or read book Bigfoot to Mothman written by Margo DeMello and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-volume encyclopedia introduces readers to the world's cryptids-those hidden or secret animals believed to exist at the margins of human society-including Bigfoot, Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Mothman. Comprehensive in its scope, this book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to know more about well-known creatures of myth and legend, such as the Chupacabra and the Jersey Devil, and discover lesser-known animals, such as the Bunyip of Australia and the Mamlambo of South Africa. Rather than purport to prove or deny the existence of these creatures, however, this volume classifies them within their respective cultural, historical, and social contexts, allowing readers to appreciate cryptids as cultural artifacts important to societies around the globe. Finally, this book goes beyond the study of the unknown to investigate who believes in cryptids, why they do, and why the study of cryptozoology is as much about understanding cryptids as it is about understanding ourselves.
