Download or read book Structural Origins of Post Yugoslav Regimes written by Valentina Petrović and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of the Yugoslav democratisation process explains the variation of regime outcomes within a structuralist framework. Focusing on the post‐socialist world, it goes beyond ethnicity and elite agency to bring the role of class and the state into discussions of third wave democracies. Offering an in‐depth study of four post‐Yugoslav cases and relying on extensive field work, it examines how civil society, state structures and elite agency influence the trajectories of Croatia, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia after the end of socialism. The analysis also considers the impact of the European Union on domestic conditions. The author argues that no single factor explains the occurrence of democracy. It is instead the result of the combination of an autonomous civil society, a non‐captured state and ruling elites willing to implement democratic reforms. Concomitant with this, the analysis provides evidence that the only sufficient condition for the occurrence of democracy is non‐captured state structures. State capacity, therefore, plays a central role in democratisation. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Eastern Europe, Southeastern Europe, the EU and democratisation, as well as to policymakers and nongovernmental organisations.
Download or read book Concealment and Exposure written by Thomas Nagel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Nagel is widely recognized as one of the top American philosophers working today. Reflecting the diversity of his many philosophical preoccupations, this volume is a collection of his most recent critical essays and reviews. The first section, Public and Private, focuses on the notion of privacy in the context of social and political issues, such as the impeachment of President Clinton. The second section, Right and Wrong, discusses moral, political and legal theory, and includes pieces on John Rawls, G.A. Cohen, and T.M. Scanlon, among others. The final section, Mind and Reality, features discussions of Richard Rorty, Donald Davidson, and the Sokal hoax, and closes with a substantial new essay on the mind-body problem. Written with characteristic rigor, these pieces reveal the intellectual passion underlying the incisive analysis for which Nagel is known.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns resolving conflicts on an international level. The author states that for the purposes of this book, the dispute would have to be at the level of a war, revolution, or other dispute that involves substantial bloodshed on one or more sides, rather than a dispute that merely involves words, economic competition, or non-violent conflict. The SOS Resolution is a special kind of Win-Win dispute resolution where one where both or all sides come out ahead of even their best initial expectations simultaneously. The steps and strategies of this resolution are fully explained.

Book excerpt: In Unsatisfied: Finding Contentment in a Discontented World, Ann C. Sullivan sorts through the reasons for our frustrations – Drama, Judgement, Fear, and Comparison – and leads readers on a path to genuine contentment through Hope, Purpose, and Fulfillment. Unsatisfied dares readers to believe that God is closer than you think, sorts through the reasons for unhappiness and frustrations, helps define fulfillment, and leads readers to find genuine contentment. Unsatisfied: • Unravels our cultural definition of fulfillment. • Identifies the empty spaces the comparison game leaves behind. • Connects the dots that lead to genuine contentment. “In Unsatisfied: Finding Contentment in a Discontented World, Ann C. Sullivan accomplishes something I wish could be taught yet fear that it can’t: She writes an in-your-face book about a deeply difficult subject, yet she avoids preaching. Rather, Ann takes a come-alongside approach and shares her life, warts and all, revealing what she’s learned and how she’s grown—allowing us to apply the morals and principles for ourselves. It’s a work of art.” Jerry B. Jenkins Novelist & Biographer | The Jerry Jenkins Writers Guild “With refreshing humor and insight, Ann skillfully weaves together the current issues of life and the timeless principles of scripture. She points to all the things we should be grateful for and the disappointments that keep us from celebrating. If you’re ready for an honest look at our struggle and the practical solutions that are available, you’ll want to pick up Ann C. Sullivan’s book, Unsatisfied.” Leslie Strobel Co-author of Spiritual Mismatch
