Book Elements of Structural Syntax

Download or read book Elements of Structural Syntax written by Lucien Tesnière and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume appears now finally in English, sixty years after the death of its author, Lucien Tesnière. It has been translated from the French original into German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, and now at long last into English as well. The volume contains a comprehensive approach to the syntax of natural languages, an approach that is foundational for an entire stream in the modern study of syntax and grammar. This stream is known today as dependency grammar (DG). Drawing examples from dozens of languages, many of which he was proficient in, Tesnière presents insightful analyses of numerous phenomena of syntax. Among the highlights are the concepts of valency and head-initial vs. head-final languages. These concepts are now taken for granted by most modern theories of syntax, even by phrase structure grammars, which represent, in a sense, the opposite sort of approach to syntax from what Tesnière was advocating. Book Tristran and Yseut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Béroul
  • Publisher : Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers
  • Release : 1987
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Tristran and Yseut written by Béroul and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the Old French text of Tristan and Yseut by Béroul, newly revised according to the Paris manuscript, and its parallel translation into English. This book is intended first and foremost to be used by students in colleges and universities, but it is the editor's hope that it will open the greatness of Tristan and Yseut's legend to a wider audience of all countries and all ages still fascinated, in our sophisticated and often cynical world, by emotions, mysteries, enchantments and above all by the pains and joys of love. In spite of its fame and general attraction the story of Tristan and Yseut is not a present available easily and in an academically suited form to the public of students of colleges and universities. The old French text, though available abroad, needs to be imported and the English translations extant are either old fashioned or lack in accuracy. This book is an answer therefore to two urgent needs, availability and accuracy both of the Old French and of the English. The general public can read the English without being disturbed by the Old French while students of Medieval Literature can study the Old French text at the same time as they read the parallel translation.

Download or read book Chaos and Night written by Henry de Montherlant and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Celestino is old and bitter and afraid, an impossible man. An anarchist who has been in exile from his native Spain for more than twenty years, he lives with his daughter in Paris, but in his mind he is still fighting the Spanish Civil War. He fulminates against the daily papers; he brags about his past exploits. He has become bigoted, self-important, and obsessed; a bully to his fellow exiles and a tyrant to his daughter, Pascualita. Then a family member dies in Madrid and there is an inheritance to sort out. Pascualita wants to go to Spain, which is supposedly opening up in response to the 1960s, and Don Celestino feels he has no choice but to follow. He is full of dread and desire, foreseeing a heroic last confrontation with his enemies, but what he encounters instead is a new commercialized Spain that has no time for the past, much less for him. Or so it seems. Because the last act of Don Celestino’s dizzying personal drama will prove that though “there is nothing serious . . . , there is tragedy.” An astonishing modern take on Don Quixote, Chaos and Night untangles the ties between politics and paranoia, self-loathing and self-pity, rage and remorse. It is the darkly funny final flowering of the art of Henry de Montherlant, a solitary and scarifying modern master whose work, admired by Graham Greene and Albert Camus, is sure to appeal to contemporary readers of Thomas Bernhard and Roberto Bolaño.
