This book was released on 1972 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerothermodynamic tests of Phase B space shuttle configurations proposed by North American Rockwell/General Dynamics Convair were conducted at Mach number 8. Test conditions provided both Mach number and Reynolds number simulation for typical ascent and reentry trajectories. This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the major test results and also presents data comparisons with theoretical calculations. Specific areas covered are: ascent heating and shock interference, booster reentry heating and flow fields, and orbiter reentry including leeside heating, windward shock angles and flow fields, windward surface heating, and boundary-layer transition.

Book Effects of Fineness and Closure Ratios on Boattail Drag of Circular arc Afterbody Models with Jet Exhaust at Mach Numbers Up to 1 3

Download or read book Effects of Fineness and Closure Ratios on Boattail Drag of Circular arc Afterbody Models with Jet Exhaust at Mach Numbers Up to 1 3 written by David E. Reubush and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of variations in fineness ratio and closure ratio on the boattail drag of circular-arc afterbody models were investigated at static conditions and at Mach numbers from 0.40 to 1.30. Jet total-pressure ratio was varied from jet off to about 6, depending on Mach number. Reynolds number based on model maximum diameter varied from about 1.2 million to 2.18 million. Angle of attack was varied from -4 deg to 8 deg. The results indicate that, at subsonic speeds before the drag rise and at a scheduled pressure ratio, the total drag (pressure plus calculated skin friction) is approximately equal for configurations with the same closure ratio. Also, for configurations with the same closure ratio, increasing fineness ratio results in an increased drag-rise Mach number; and for configurations with the same fineness ratio, increasing closure ratio results in an increased drag-rise Mach number.

Book An Investigation of Model Scaling Effects at Mach Numbers from 0 60 to 1 40

Download or read book An Investigation of Model Scaling Effects at Mach Numbers from 0 60 to 1 40 written by David E. A. Reichenau and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel investigations of three scale models were conducted to determine the effects of model scaling in the subsonic and transonic flow regimes. The models were 4.7-, 13-, and 17-percent scale F-15 fighter equivalent body models. The data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.40 and free-stream Reynolds numbers from 1.0 to 5.3 million for model angles of attack from 0 to 5 deg. The results show that at subsonic Mach numbers the zero-lift pressure drag coefficient of the basic configurations was a function of Reynolds number and Mach number. However, the pressure drag coefficient for the fuselage-alone configuration and the alternate wing configuration was essentially invariant with Mach number for Mach numbers below 0.90. The data obtained with the cylindrical afterbody model and integrated aft-end pressure drag increments show that the transonic interference resulting from model size was primarily confined to the contoured fuselage afterbody.

Book Reynolds Number Effects in Transonic Flow

Download or read book Reynolds Number Effects in Transonic Flow written by A. Elsenaar and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reynolds number effects in transonic flow are critically reviewed. This review, which may be considered a supplement to AR 224 'Boundary Layer Simulation and Control in Wind Tunnels', is mainly concered with a discussion of viscous effects actually observed on realistic configurations. The following geometries are considered: Airfoils and high aspect ratio wings typical and transport aircraft, fighter-type low aspect ratio delta wings, tow- and three-dimensional bodies characteristic of missiles and combat aircraft fuselages, and afterbodies. "Pseudo"--Reynolds number on the wind tunnel environment and in turn affect the flow about a model. As an introduction, a brief retrospect of the "history" of Reynolds number effect is presented. This AGARDograph has been produced at the request of the Fluid Dynamics Panel of AGARD.

Book Aircraft Design Projects

Download or read book Aircraft Design Projects written by Lloyd R. Jenkinson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-04-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written with students of aerospace or aeronautical engineering firmly in mind, this is a practical and wide-ranging book that draws together the various theoretical elements of aircraft design - structures, aerodynamics, propulsion, control and others - and guides the reader in applying them in practice. Based on a range of detailed real-life aircraft design projects, including military training, commercial and concept aircraft, the experienced UK and US based authors present engineering students with an essential toolkit and reference to support their own project work. All aircraft projects are unique and it is impossible to provide a template for the work involved in the design process. However, with the knowledge of the steps in the initial design process and of previous experience from similar projects, students will be freer to concentrate on the innovative and analytical aspects of their course project. The authors bring a unique combination of perspectives and experience to this text. It reflects both British and American academic practices in teaching aircraft design. Lloyd Jenkinson has taught aircraft design at both Loughborough and Southampton universities in the UK and Jim Marchman has taught both aircraft and spacecraft design at Virginia Tech in the US. * Demonstrates how basic aircraft design processes can be successfully applied in reality* Case studies allow both student and instructor to examine particular design challenges * Covers commercial and successful student design projects, and includes over 200 high quality illustrations

Book WIG Craft and Ekranoplan

Download or read book WIG Craft and Ekranoplan written by Liang Yun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-03 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last half-century, high-speed water transportation has developed rapidly. Novel high-performance marine vehicles, such as the air cushion vehicle (ACV), surface effect ship (SES), high-speed monohull craft (MHC), catamaran (CAT), hydrofoil craft (HYC), wave-piercing craft (WPC) and small water area twin hull craft (SWATH) have all developed as concepts, achieving varying degrees of commercial and military success. Prototype ACV and SES have achieved speeds of 100 knots in at calm con- tions; however, the normal cruising speed for commercial operations has remained around 35–50 knots. This is partly due to increased drag in an average coastal s- way where such craft operate services and partly due to limitations of the propulsion systems for such craft. Water jets and water propellers face limitations due to c- itation at high speed, for example. SWATH are designed for reduced motions in a seaway, but the hull form is not a low drag form suitable for high-speed operation. So that seems to lead to a problem – maintain water contact and either water propulsion systems run out of power or craft motions and speed loss are a problem in higher seastates. The only way to higher speed would appear to be to disconnect completely from the water surface. You, the reader, might respond with a question about racing hydroplanes, which manage speeds of above 200 kph. Yes, true, but the power-to-weight ratio is extremely high on such racing machines and not economic if translated into a useful commercial vessel.
