Book Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Disease

Download or read book Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Disease written by David E. Griffith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and authoritative source on nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) pathogens and diseases and their appropriate management, with a focus on lung disease. NTM diseases, especially lung diseases, are increasing in prevalence in the U.S. and internationally with concomitant growing interest in a broad section of the medical community. Often merely included in coverage of tuberculosis, many aspects of NTM organisms and diseases are actually very different than TB. These differences are not intuitive or trivial and frequently result in suboptimal management of NTM patients. This book addresses these gaps in the literature with chapters on microbiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, the various diseases that can stem from NTM, and their particular management. There is also coverage on prevention and NTM as a public health problem. For pulmonologists and infectious disease physicians, this is the definitive resource on nontuberculous mycobacteria.

With the incidence rate of NTM infections increasing globally during the last decade, significant mortality and morbidity must be addressed. This important reference will provide research scientists, clinical microbiologists, hospital diagnostic technicians, and post graduate medical and science students with information on the epidemiology, prevalence, microbiology and clinical aspects of NTM.

Download or read book NTM The New Uber Bugs written by Veronique Dartois and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incidence of pulmonary disease caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), such as Mycobacterium abscessus and M. avium, is increasing at an alarming rate, surpassing tuberculosis (TB) in many countries. Treatment durations are extremely long. With low sputum conversion rates, the outcomes are often disappointing. Thus, NTM disease resembles extremely drug resistant TB. There is an urgent need for increased research on this dreadful disease. For this book we brought together experts from a wide range of disciplines addressing current status, gaps and needs, and new developments in several NTM-relevant research areas. We start with the discussion of NTM disease presentations and clinical research. This is followed by contributions on epidemiology, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, drug discovery and development, bacteriology and targets, and new diagnostic tools. We would like to thank the 130 authors for sharing their work and insights. We hope that this collection of articles will stimulate discussions and research activities on the challenging lung disease caused by the diverse group of pathogens called NTM.

Book Nuclear Disarmament in International Law

Download or read book Nuclear Disarmament in International Law written by Haralambos Athanasopulos and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When German physicists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman first split the uranium atom in 1938, they might have little imagined the potential power their experiments had unleashed. Since the United States successfully detonated the first atomic weapons in 1945, the entire world has lived in fear of annihilation. Technological advances in weaponry and, importantly, their delivery systems have only heightened the sense of dread. Yet, since the end of World War II, world governments have been unable to agree on a strategy for nuclear disarmament. This led first to the Cold War and ultimately to the proliferation of nuclear weapons throughout the world. This work examines the nuclear question within the framework of international law. The advent of the nuclear age and its impact on postwar peace and law is first covered. This is followed by analyses of the initial United Nations disarmament initiatives and the reasons they were doomed from the start. The globalization of the Cold War, the expansion of the nuclear arms race, and the START treaties and the legacy of 1970s-era detente efforts in the years leading up to the end of the Cold War are then detailed. How the United Nations reacted to the end of the Cold War and the prospects for disarmament in the 21st century are the subjects of the concluding section.

Book excerpt: For parents trying to pass on the Catholic faith to their children and to their friends, this simple book will help them how to explain what Catholics do on Sunday and why they do it. The Mass should work at the deepest level of our being, changing us into people who share God's own life. For this to happen, we need to take part in it in a way that is inspired by the spirit of the Church's Liturgy. In simple language the First Section of this book leads us step by step through the Mass so that we may take part in it with a deeper reverence and understanding. Should we wish to dig more deeply, the Second Section is one into which we can dip from time to time to examine the meaning of some words associated with Sacred Scripture and the Sacrifice of the Mass. The Third Section considers some extra spirituality dealing with the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. This book would be very suitable as an instruction text-book in Post-Primary Schools.
