Download or read book Pursuing Giraffe written by Anne Innis Dagg and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, Anne Innis Dagg was a young zoologist with a lifelong love of giraffe and a dream to study them in Africa. Based on extensive journals and letters home, Pursuing Giraffe vividly chronicles the realization of that dream and the year that she spent studying and documenting giraffe behaviour. Dagg was one of the first zoologists to study wild animals in Africa (before Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey); her memoir captures her youthful enthusiasm for her journey, as well as her näiveté about the complex social and political issues in Africa. Once in the field, she recorded the complexities of giraffe social relationships but also learned about human relationships in the context of apartheid in South Africa and colonialism in Tanganyika (Tanzania) and Kenya. Hospitality and friendship were readily extended to her as a white woman, but she was shocked by the racism of the colonial whites in Africa. Reflecting the twenty-three-year-old author’s response to an “exotic” world far removed from the Toronto where she grew up, the book records her visits to Zanzibar and Victoria Falls and her climb of Mount Kilimanjaro. Pursuing Giraffe is a fascinating account that has much to say about the status of women in the mid-twentieth century. The book’s foreword by South African novelist Mark Behr (author of The Smell of Apples and Embrace) provides further context for and insights into Dagg’s narrative.
Download or read book Sex Tourism on the Kenyan Coast written by Rose Omondi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges many suppositions surrounding sex tourism, suggesting that elderly males who seek romance and are caught up in their fantasies of finding love with ‘exotic’ black women are taken advantage of, even while the women are often deluding themselves when searching for the mzungu who will enable them to fulfil their dreams of travel, house ownership and comfort. It is a complex story based on research into the lives of the sex workers obtained from a study conducted over 12 months in the bars and nightclubs of the Kenyan coast. Fortunes are made and lost, but the tragedy is that the success of the few in achieving their dreams becomes a false promise for the majority who seek to emulate the success of the few. The book will be of immense value to those interested in gender studies, and indeed those who hold an interest in the complexities of sex work.
Download or read book Amani Haki Yetu written by Adam Hummel and published by Partridge Publishing Africa. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 30, 2007, President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of Kenyas presidential election. Within minutes of this declaration, rioting erupted across Kenya, from the coast of the Indian Ocean to the banks of Lake Victoria. These riots lasted two months, claiming the lives of nearly 1500 Kenyans, and leaving more than half a million internally displaced. Hostility to this extent, not seen in Kenyas modern history, illustrated the divisive nature of Kenyas tribalism, and left an entire generation questioning whether Kenya would once again become one of Africas most peaceful nations. Realizing the role they had in ensuring a peaceful future, Kenyas youths, who comprise a majority of the population, began to lead, and grassroots organizations soon began to materialize throughout Kenyas countryside. This book details the efforts made by one such group of Kenyan youths who, together with a young Canadian, came together with the goal of helping to build a sustainable peace in Kenya. It details the background to Kenyas 2008 post-election violence, the early efforts leading to the formation of the Youth Ambassadors for Peace, and steps taken to engage both the potential and ability of those who wish to help. Through youth empowerment and the belief that diversity creates strength, these Kenyans demonstrate the power of a small group of thoughtful and dedicated individuals, united by their desire to find peace before Kenyas next elections are held in March 2013.

Download or read book An Obama s Journey written by Mark Obama Ndesandjo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revealing and beautifully written memoir, Mark Obama Ndesandjo, recounts his complex relationship with his older half-brother, President Barack Obama, including their first meeting in Kenya over twenty years ago. The book also offers the author's inspiring personal story about identity and multiculturalism. Rare family photos add to the book's personal nature as does the intense recounting of domestic violence in the home of Barack Obama Sr.’s and his third wife, Ruth Baker, Mark’s Jewish-American mother. The book also attempts to set the records straight on several points of the president’s best-selling memoir Dreams from My Father. In its connection to President Obama, Mark's story takes on an even greater significance because it becomes all the more directly, a story of American identity and a window into the complex figure of the father they share, Barack Obama Sr., their roots in Kenya, their multicultural identities, and their relationships with America.
