Book From Modern Myths to Global Encounters

Download or read book From Modern Myths to Global Encounters written by Anke van der Kwaak and published by Leiden University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In western imagery Africa is a continent of static, 'traditional', societies that are incompatible with, even antithetical to, western progress and modernity. This book looks into processes of change and transformation in Africa in the context of modernity and globalization, showing the resilience, rather than the expected demise, of local cultures in Africa. In this volume, the persistent western modern myth is deconstructed. Most contributions are from students of Peter Geschiere: young Africanists from Africa and Europe from different disciplinary backgrounds, including anthropology, history, political sciences and law. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted during the last two decennia they reflect on the three main themes that are central to Geschiere's work: African politics, the modernity of witchcraft, and the construction of communal identities in times of globalization. These themes cover some of the most topical subjects currently debated in African studies not only by Geschiere but also by his close colleagues, including Jean-François Bayart, Achille Mbembe and Jean and John Comaroff, all known for being critical and 'cutting edge'. This critical attitude has inspired all of the contributions, including that of the Latin Americanist Michiel Baud. The aforementioned scholars have instigated debates on African politics in terms of 'Africanizing the state' while occult forces - witchcraft often being taken to be the hallmark of a traditional world view - are understood as part and parcel of processes of modernization and nation-state building. Ethnic and religious identities, intersected with gender, class and generation, prove to be important anchors of 'authenticity' and 'autochthony' in an era of globalization. The personal reflections on the coming of age as Africanists as exemplified by the contributions of Geschiere's students in this volume have theoretical and methodological implications, but also throw light on the anthropology of Africa in late twentieth century academia in The Netherlands. From modern myths to global encounters is essential reading for students and scholars in African Studies, Development Studies, Political Science, International Law, Anthropology and History of Africa as well as for anyone interested in postcolonial African studies.

Book Myth Performance in the African Diasporas

Download or read book Myth Performance in the African Diasporas written by Benita Brown and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-12-24 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diaspora studies continue to expand in range and scope and remain fertile terrain for investigating multiple techniques of myth creation in dance performance, history as performance, dramatic narrative, and staged rituals in the field. Similarly, research in postcoloniality, gender/sexuality, intercultural, and literary studies, among others, all engage and feature core components of performance and myth in articulating and understanding their fields. This sharing of similar components also demonstrates the interrelatedness of these fields. In Myth Performance in the African Diasporas: Ritual, Theatre, and Dance, the authors contend that performance traditions across artistic disciplines reveal a shared—if sometimes varied—journey among diasporic artists to reconnect with their African ancestors. The volume begins with a historical and aesthetic overview of how dramatists, choreographers, and performance artists have approached the task of interpreting African myth. The individual chapters reveal how specific artists, dramatists, and choreographers have interpreted African myth and what performative approaches and traditions they have used. Focusing on theatre practitioners from the nineteenth century through the present, the authors examine performative traditions from Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Drawing upon research in theatre, dance, and literary texts, Myth Performance in the African Diasporas will be crucial to academics interested in African performance viewed through the prism of myth making and spiritual/ritualistic stagings. Besides those interested in diasporic studies, this book will also be useful to scholars and students of history, drama, theatre, and dance.

Book Dagara Black Bagr English Dagaare

Download or read book Dagara Black Bagr English Dagaare written by Alexis B. Tengan and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the author presents a version of Africa's longest oral recitation of myth of origination, the black bagr myth found among the Dagara of Northern Ghana and Southern Burkina Faso, and discusses in detail its historical and literary significance for the society. Hence, the author first outlines the historical conditions possibly responsible for the coming into existence of both the mythical narratives and the rites of initiation that accompany the narration; and then presents the literary frame and structure in which the black bagr narrative is composed. The rest of the book is a unique bilingual (Dagara and English) presentation of the black bagr narration recorded and viewed live from within a secret rite of initiation. The narration itself, similar to all black bagr ritual narrative sessions, lasted up to three hours and was performed without interruption by one speaker. The narrative content shows to what extent the rites achieve the double purpose of teaching the initiates culture knowledge and giving them new individual identities that will equip them for different social positions in life.
