Book Mythology and Ideology of the Basque Language

Download or read book Mythology and Ideology of the Basque Language written by Antonio Tovar and published by Center for Basque Studies Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This small book on ideas about the nature and origin of the Basque language up to the early twentieth century is a highly erudite essay, even if the motivation for its composition was ultimately political. Its erudition is guaranteed by the professional credentials of its author, Antonio Tovar, one of twentieth-century Spain's most polymathic intellectuals and men of letters, at the same time that its reason for being was the fruit of his passionate political commitment which originated in his early years and modulated over the course of his life by criticism and experience, led him to take an interest in all aspects of public life, especially those related to culture. At the crucial moment of the book's composition near the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 there was a need for actors with a sincere desire to understand the ideas and aspirations of the opposing sides, broad-minded and generous openness when it came to revising their own decades-old views, and perceptive intelligence for building connections with the proponents of other ideologies on the basis of shared humanist values. Tovar was one of these men.

Book Towards a History of the Basque Language

Download or read book Towards a History of the Basque Language written by José Ignacio Hualde and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions related to the origin and history of the Basque language spark considerable interest, since it is the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in western Europe. However, until now, there was no readily available source in English providing answers to these questions or giving an overview of past and current research in this area. This book is intended to partly fill this void. The book contains both state-of-the-art papers which summarize our knowledge about particular areas of Basque historical linguistics, and articles presenting new hypotheses and points of view based on hard evidence and careful analysis. All contributors to this volume have demonstrated expertise in the topic within Basque historical linguistics that their chapter addresses. Two classical articles by the late Luis Michelena are included in English translation. In addition, the book includes studies on diachronic phonology, morphology and syntax. The relation of Basque to other languages is also investigated in a couple of chapters.

Book Palaeohispanic Languages and Epigraphies

Download or read book Palaeohispanic Languages and Epigraphies written by Alejandro Garcia Sinner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to Phoenician, Greek, and Latin, at least four writing systems were used between the fifth century BCE and the first century CE to write the indigenous languages of the Iberian peninsula (the so-called Palaeohispanic languages): Tartessian, Iberian, Celtiberian, and Lusitanian. In total over three thousand inscriptions are preserved in what is certainly the largest corpus of epigraphic expression in the western Mediterranean world, with the exception of the Italian peninsula. The aim of this volume is to present the most recent cutting-edge scholarship on these epigraphies and on the languages that they transmit. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach which draws on the expertise of leading specialists in the field, it brings together a broad range of perspectives on the linguistic, philological, epigraphic, numismatic, historical, and archaeological aspects of the surviving inscriptions, and provides invaluable new insights into the social, economic, and cultural history of Hispania and the ancient western Mediterranean. The study of these languages is essential to our understanding of colonial Phoenician and Greek literacy, which lies at the root of their growth, as well as of the diffusion of Roman literacy, which played an important role in the final expansion of the so called Palaeohispanic languages.

Yet the Basques are singular in this, that, in the midst of the great revolutions which have agitated the whole of Europe, causing radical changes, levelling to the ground or con verting into ruins great empires, powerful nationalities, monuments; sweeping away languages, and even the very races themselves - the Basques have known how to pass unscathed through the many storms of devasta tion, preserving intact their nationality, institutions, laws, language, and customs. Download or read book Things that are said and Things that are Not written by Naroa Anabitarte and published by Center for Basque Studies Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present an overview of the ideological context of the Basque language. Ideas about language emerge in conjunction with ideas about other areas such as politics and science. For this reason, we have focused on the link between language and national ideologies. We have also included some reflections on the rhetoric used in scientific research on the Basque language as well as on the individualism-collectivism controversy so central to the social sciences. Finally, given the dynamic nature of ideologies, we also studied the evolution of the discourses on the Basque language, with a particular emphasis on silenced discourses.

Book Legends and Popular Tales of the Basque People

Download or read book Legends and Popular Tales of the Basque People written by Mariana Monteiro and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myths and legends of the Basque peoples are lively adventures which shed insight on the ancient culture and spiritual traditions unique to the Basque country. Historically, the legends of the Basque region were treated as insignificant by scholars of literature and readers. Yet Mariana Monteiro, in presenting them anew for the English reader, makes a passionate case for their inclusion in the pantheon of great myths: though their narrations are simple in comparison to other legends, this is but camouflage for the deeply meaningful lessons they impart. That the Basque peoples have existed through centuries, largely escaping European wars and their devastation, is a sign that their culture remains unblemished by successive upheavals; a bulwark of the old, existing with strength against history's odds. Such is how the author frames these legends, rich in their poetic imagination and imbued by a culture that endures. The symbolism of the vivid creatures in these stories, and the apt portrayal of human nature in the narrations, are delivered amid the backdrop of the beautiful rolling hills and plains of the Basque country, its lush forests, and its mountainous fissures. The reader will be appreciative, and perhaps enchanted, by the age-old stories that emerged from this valuable corner of the Earth.
