Book excerpt: La Bible anonyme du manuscrit B.n.F. fr. 763, présente également dans trois autres manuscrits -Ms 3516 de l'Arsenal, Ms. f.fr.437 de la bibliothèque de l'école de médecine de Montpellier, Ms. B.n.F. fr. 12555- est une traduction partielle et originale de la bible. Cette œuvre allie tradition et légendes, canons et apocryphes. L'analyse, et la comparaison, de ses mythes et récits de commencement révèle la singularité de cette œuvre qui se construit comme un palindrome. En effet, le mythe originel et la légende de la croix sont homologables car tous deux écrivent un mythe eschatologique. Dans cette perspective, le jeu sur les mythes permet de délimiter un commencement absolu correspondant à un mythe de création -cosmogonique, anthropogonique, paradisiaque-, à un mythe de la chute mais aussi au mythe de Caïn et Abel, tandis que deux commencements relatifs se distinguent référant, d'une part, au mythe du déluge et, d'autre part, au temps d'Abraham et de Moïse. Mais, d'un commencement à l'autre, un processus de répétition du pêché estampille l'histoire et semble reproduire le commencement absolu. Pourtant, au sein de ce cycle de répétitions, se décèle un principe de rupture, divin et salutaire, incarne par jésus et sa croix, tous deux préfigurés dans les commencements relatifs et évoqués, par la typologie, dans la légende de la croix en termes de mythe de création. Ainsi peut se briser le système de l'éternel retour au profit d'une conception linéaire du temps, fondée sur l'espérance eschatologique. Parallèlement, le roman de la création a aussi prêché les vertus salutaires de l'Eglise et de ses dogmes, reflet du paradis sur terre, image de ce paradis originel que nous rendra le Christ. Ces faisceaux de mythes, universels et ancestraux, enchâssés les uns dans les autres, ont délivré une conception originale, mais néanmoins canonique, de la fin de l'homme écrite comme un commencement

From the weapons used to torment and sacrifice the body of Christ sprang a reliquary tradition that produced active and contemplative devotional practices, complex literary narratives, intense lyric poems, striking visual images, and innovative architectural ornament. This collection displays the fascinating range of intellectual possibilities generated by representations of these medieval ’objects,’ and through the interdisciplinary collaboration of its contributors produces a fresh view of the multiple intersections of the spiritual and the material in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It also includes a new and authoritative critical edition of the Middle English Arma Christi poem known as ’O Vernicle’ that takes account of all twenty surviving manuscripts. The book opens with a substantial introduction that surveys previous scholarship and situates the Arma in their historical and aesthetic contexts. The ten essays that follow explore representative examples of the instruments of the Passion across a broad swath of history, from some of their earliest formulations in late antiquity to their reformulations in early modern Europe. Together, they offer the first large-scale attempt to understand the arma Christi as a unique cultural phenomenon of its own, one that resonated across centuries in multiple languages, genres, and media.
