Book excerpt: Set in the present, Casey and Cody are seemingly ordinary everyday type citizens to the uninitiated. They are swept up in a tidal wave of intrigue of cosmic proportion. But who are they really? International rogues or cells in a global intelligence apparatus? Casey and Cody tackle life head-on and on its terms. With an uneasy tension between nihilism and optimism, they operate behind-the-scenes to mobilize an organized revolt. The working class revolt against the patriarchy as a major paradigm shift occurs on a global scale.

Book The BBC

  • Author : Tom Mills
  • Publisher : Verso Books
  • Release : 2020-10-13
  • ISBN : 1784784834
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The BBC written by Tom Mills and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC: the mouthpiece of the Establishment? The BBC is one of the most important institutions in Britain; it is also one of the most misunderstood. Despite its claim to be independent and impartial, and the constant accusations of a liberal bias, the BBC has always sided with the elite. As Tom Mills demonstrates, we are only getting the news that the Establishment wants aired in public. Throughout its existence, the BBC has been in thrall to those in power. This was true in 1926 when it stood against the workers during the General Strike, and since then the Corporation has continued to mute the voices of those who oppose the status quo: miners in 1984; anti-war protesters in 2003; those who offer alternatives to austerity economics since 2008. From the outset much of its activity has been scrutinised by the secret services at the invitation of those in charge. Since the 1990s the BBC has been integrated into the market, while its independence from government and big business has been steadily eroded. The BBC is an important and timely examination of a crucial public institution that is constantly under threat.

Book Class Culture and the Agrarian Myth

Download or read book Class Culture and the Agrarian Myth written by Tom Brass and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using examples from different historical contexts, this book examines the relationship between class, nationalism, modernity and the agrarian myth. Essentializing rural identity, traditional culture and quotidian resistance, both aristocratic/plebeian and pastoral/Darwinian forms of agrarian myth discourse inform struggles waged 'from above' and 'from below', surfacing in peasant movements, film and travel writing. Film depictions of royalty, landowner and colonizer as disempowered, ‘ordinary’ or well-disposed towards ‘those below’, whose interests they share, underwrite populism and nationalism. Although these ideologies replaced the cosmopolitanism of the Grand Tour, twentieth century travel literature continued to reflect a fear of vanishing rural ‘otherness’ abroad, combined with the arrival there of the mass tourist, the plebeian from home.

Book Kenneth Burke on Myth

Download or read book Kenneth Burke on Myth written by Lawrence Coupe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth Burke--rhetorician, philosopher, linguist, sociologist, literary and music critic, crank--was one of the foremost theorists of literary form. He did not fit tidily into any philosophical school, nor was he reducible to any simple set of principles or ideas. He published widely, and is probably best known for two of his classic works, A Rhetoric of Motive and Philosophy of Literary Form. His observations on myth, however, were never systematic, and much of his writing on literary theory and other topics cannot be fully understood without fleshing out his thoughts on myth and mythmaking.
