Book excerpt: This book is the published version of my PhD thesis, which was defended at the University of Glamorgan now known as the University of South Wales, United Kingdom, on August 21st 2003. The original text was edited in accordance with the needs of the book publishing industry and also to appeal to a larger audience. In this work, I tried to show what was at the core of the naturalistic aesthetics: determinism. In Zola's views, determinism is all about the combination between the influence of the social milieu and that of heredity which determines every human being's fate. Beyond that, I took great interest in showing how much we are indebted to Zola due to his undeniable contribution to the renewal of the novel writing techniques. I notably pointed out the anachronistic discourses, the mise en abyme, the hypertrophy of the true detail, the opulence of the metonymic and the synecdochic digressions, or the intrusion of the pagan and religious myths in the naturalistic novel. Beyond that purely aesthetic aspect, I discussed Zola's autobiography which is all about the criticism of the author. That led me to specify the strengths and weaknesses of the man, a prodigiously talented writer despite the controversies surrounding him in his day. Ideologically, Zola was a natalist and a republican who loved justice. All his journalistic and literary production can be summed up in a single word: struggle. He was a wrestler obsessed with the denunciation of the privileges of the elite of the Imperial society and of the various injustices the people suffered from. His tireless struggle against these two unbearable scourges had the sole purpose of putting an end to them altogether so that progress and social welfare would benefit all of his fellow citizens.

He looks at some of the most compelling and explicit literary treatments of physiognomy in the French canon, suggesting that the ways authors use physiognomical ideas to render the world "hyper-significant" poses fundamental questions about the nature of narrative itself. He also shows how physiognomy serves almost invariably as a tool of sexism as it attempts to ascribe intellectual or moral qualities on the basis of corporal features. Linked by more than their physiognomical themes, these novels share similar dynamics of reading, rhetoric, and representation.

What leads young intellectuals to search for an ideology? What accounts for the changes in ideological fashion over time and nation, and shifts from one set of philosophical tenets to another? Who indeed are the ""intellectuals?""Studies of ideology have tended to range themselves for or against particular viewpoints, or have concerned themselves with defining perspectives. The purpose of this book is to examine the common causal patterns in the development of various differing ideologies. Feuer finds that any ideology may be said to be composed of three ingredients: The most basic and invariant is some form of Mosaic myth. Every ideology also has its characteristic philosophical tenets spreading from left to right, which conform to the cycle of ideas; and, finally, an ideology must be taken up by some section of the population who can translate it into action.Intellectuals in generational revolt find in some version of the ideological myth a charter and dramatization of their emotions, aims, and actions. Since each generation of intellectuals tends to reject its predecessors' doctrines, a law of intellectual fashion arises the alternation of philosophical doctrines. Ideology has inevitably made for an authoritarian presumption on the part of master-intellectuals and marginal ones and assumes their antagonism to objective truth and science. It is Feuer's contention that only when intellectuals abandon ideology in favor of science or scholarship will an unfortunate chapter in the history of human unreasonbe overcome.
