Book Mystics After Modernism

Download or read book Mystics After Modernism written by Rudolf Steiner and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2000 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystics Steiner writes about in this book were early giants in the modern art of illumined self-knowledge. Their ways of seeing the world, God, and themselves foreshadowed all that we practice now in the best of meditation, both East and West. Here, you can read about their essential passion for unity, their practice of intensification of perception, and their ever-fresh insights into the process of knowing itself. Contents: Foreword by Christopher Bamford Preface to the 1923 Edition Introduction: Mystics, Natural Science, and the Modern World (by Rudolf Steiner) Meister Eckhart The Friendship with God: Johannes Tauler Cardinal Nicolas of Cusa Agrippa of Nettesheim & Theophrastus Paracelsus Valentin Weigel & Jacob Boehme Giordano Bruno & Angelus Silesius Epilogue Afterword: About the Author, the People, and the Background of This Book (by Paul M. Allen) Preface to First Edition 1901 Steiner immerses us in the evolving stream of these eleven mystics who appeared in central Europe between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. They managed to resolve the conflict between inner perceptions and the new seeds of modern science and human individuality. Based on the lives of those mystics and on his own spiritual insight, Steiner shows how their ideas can illuminate and preserve our true human nature today. Rudolf Steiner ends his book with a quotation from the Cherubinic Wanderer, a collection of sayings gathered by Angelus Silesius: "Dear Friend, this is enough for now. If you wish to read more, go and become the writing and the essence yourself." A previous edition was titled Mysticism at the dawn of the Modern Age.

Book On Philosophy History and Literature

Download or read book On Philosophy History and Literature written by Rudolf Steiner and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's summary and summaries of 34 lectures, 1901-1905; with reports on Rudolf Steiner's activity in the "Giordano Bruno Association," 1902 (CW 51) "Steiner's approach was at first a surprise for the students, who had been schooled in Marxist thought and tended to view all spiritual matters as 'byproducts' of material, economic processes. For them, it was questionable whether the spiritual striving of individual human beings could really be a driving force in history. Steiner knew the soul disposition of his students and the 'inexpressibly tragic situation' that the proletariat's intense desire for knowledge had so far been 'satisfied only through the grossest form of materialism.' But the materialistic ideas that had been absorbed by the workers from popular scientific literature and from Marxist writings contained 'partial truths.'" (introduction) Wide-ranging, illuminating, and entirely unique in Rudolf Steiner's Collected Works, this volume consists of lectures given at the Worker Education School and at the Independent College in Berlin (along with a lengthy appendix on Steiner's activity in the Giordano Bruno Association). Concerning his teaching activities in the Worker School, Steiner later reflected in his autobiography, "I had to find a completely different way of expressing myself than I had become used to until then" (p. 193). This was due largely to his students' working-class background. Steiner's new approach involved allowing "idealism to arise from materialism." The result was the foundation for what he called "historical symptomatology"--that is, the study of the deeper causes behind history through their symptomatic expression in concrete historical events. This volume is therefore an exceptional resource for anyone interested in Steiner's approach to history. Steiner's lectures at the Independent College, which form part two of the volume, are concerned, on the one hand, with the philosophies of the medieval and early modern mystics--forming a companion to his book Mystics after Modernism (CW 7)--and, on the other, with the remarkable figure of Friedrich Schiller. Speaking on the occasion of the centenary of Schiller's death, Steiner's lectures are a brilliant homage to the great thinker and dramatist, brimming with insights into this extraordinary individual and the significance of his contributions for our time. The appendix contains unique documents outlining Steiner's work in the Giordano Bruno Association for a Unified Worldview. The lively exchange of ideas and Steiner's unique role within the Association are evident in the selected lectures and discussions. This book is a must-read for both long-time students of Steiner's work and newcomers seeking a fresh, enlivened, and enlivening approach to philosophy, history, and literature. On Philosophy, History, and Literature is a translation from German of Uber Philosophie, Geschichte, und Literatur. Darstellungen an der Arbeiterbildungsschule und der Freien Hochschule in Berlin, Zusammenstellung edition, Rudolf Steiner Verlag, Dornach, 1983 (GA 51).

Book Autobiography

Download or read book Autobiography written by Rudolf Steiner and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 4 lectures, Dornach, June 28 - July 18, 1923 (CW 350) "Truth and striving for truth must taste good to you; and lies, once you are conscious of them, must taste bitter and poisonous. You must not only know that human judgments have color, but also that printer's ink nowadays is mostly deadly nightshade juice. You must be able to experience this in all honesty and rectitude, and once you can do so, you will be in a state of spiritual transformation" (Rudolf Steiner). What is the relationship between coming to see the secrets of the universe and one's own view of the world? How far must one go before finding the higher worlds on the path of natural science? Do cosmic forces influence all of humanity? What connection do plants have with the human being and the human body? In answering these questions, Steiner covers a wide range of topics, from the development of independent thinking and the ability to think backward to the uses of what seems boring and the reversal of thinking between the physical and spiritual worlds, and from the "physiology" of dreams to living into nature and the spiritual dimension of various foods we eat. As always in his lectures to the workers, Steiner's style is clear, direct, and accessible. This volume is a translation from German of four lectures from Rhythmen im Kosmos und im Menschenwesen: Wie kommt man zum Schauen der geistigen Welt? (GA 350).

Book A Rosicrucian Soul

Download or read book A Rosicrucian Soul written by Russell Pooler and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written 1904-1908 (CW 11) "Rudolf Steiner shows that the insoluble link between humanity and cosmos is the fundamental basis of evolution. As human beings have participated in the development of the world we know today, so their achievements are directly connected with the ultimate destiny of the universe. In human hands rests the freedom to shape the future course of creation. Knowledge of our exalted origins and of the path we have followed is indispensable if we are to evolve a future worthy of responsible human beings.... Through a study of Steiner's writings, one can come to a clear, reasonable, comprehensive understanding of human beings and their place in the universe." --Paul Marshall Allen In the best tradition of ancient wisdom literature, Cosmic Memory reconstructs, from the akashic record, events that span the time between the origin of the Earth and the beginning of recorded history. This spiritual research includes a profound investigation of the origins, achievements, and fate of the Atlanteans and Lemurians--the remarkable "lost" root races that developed the first concepts of "good" and "evil," manipulated natural forces, laid the foundation for human legal and ethical systems, and defined and nurtured the distinctive yet complementary powers of men and women that brought humankind, many centuries ago, to its highest artistic, intellectual, and spiritual attainments. Through this discussion of our true origins, Cosmic Memory offers a genuine foundation for our lives, allowing us to realize our real value, dignity, and essence. The reader is shown our human connection with the world around us as well as our highest goals and true destiny. This is a key volume for understanding Rudolf Steiner's early development as a Theosophist and how his ideas, terminology, and formulations during that time fit into the development of his anthroposophic epistemology and Christology. This volume is a translation of Aus der Akasha-Chronik (Rudolf Steiner Gesamtausgabe 11), Rudolf Steiner Verlag, 1986.

  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book TechGnosis written by Erik Davis and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TechGnosis is a cult classic of media studies that straddles the line between academic discourse and popular culture; it appeals to both those secular and spiritual, to fans of cyberpunk and hacker literature and culture as much as new-thought adherents and spiritual seekers How does our fascination with technology intersect with the religious imagination? In TechGnosis—a cult classic now updated and reissued with a new afterword—Erik Davis argues that while the realms of the digital and the spiritual may seem worlds apart, esoteric and religious impulses have in fact always permeated (and sometimes inspired) technological communication. Davis uncovers startling connections between such seemingly disparate topics as electricity and alchemy; online roleplaying games and religious and occult practices; virtual reality and gnostic mythology; programming languages and Kabbalah. The final chapters address the apocalyptic dreams that haunt technology, providing vital historical context as well as new ways to think about a future defined by the mutant intermingling of mind and machine, nightmare and fantasy.

Book Women Mystics Confront the Modern World

Download or read book Women Mystics Confront the Modern World written by Marie-Florine Bruneau and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Mystics Confront the Modern World situates the female mystical tradition within the context of the epistemological shift which affected religious sentiments and the perception of the self at the dawn of the modern world. Anchored in a comprehensive knowledge of the religious history of seventeenth-century France, this book offers a vivid account of the fascinating lives and work of two exceptional women. Marie de l'Incarnation (1599-1672) and Madame Guyon (1648-1717) continue a literary and spiritual tradition that had begun in the thirteenth century. Yet, because they were at a crucial point in the history of Western mysticism, when this movement was at once at its apogee and in the first stages of decline, their writings show indications of a changing mentality. These transformations shed light on the social significance of female mysticism in the Western tradition. The opportunities the two women seized or shunned highlight their maneuvering for validation and autonomy. But their choices also highlight many contradictions, compromises, and limits imposed upon their self-expression. At the confluence of French and American scholarship on mysticism, this work joins these two schools of thought by introducing gender as a viable category of inquiry into the one and by tempering the overly-optimistic interpretation of female mysticism of the other.
