Book The Creed Or a Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Creed Or a Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Thomas Mozley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed or a Philosophy The Church has been, and still is, the great school of manners. It has purified and sweetened civilisa tion, and has produced the gentleman and the lady of our times; but an enemy has sown tares in it, and these tares are apt to overshadow and stifle the crop. Anything like an attack upon current phrases and ideas, implies the charge of heresy, and against that every religious community has always had its weapons, and always will have. I will not attempt any lengthened apology for the position in which I now return to the subject of this volume. The world is rather sick of apologies, and is of the opinion that, so far as a man excuses himself, so far does he accuse himself also, seeing that his life ought to speak for itself. Book The Creed in Daily Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Creed in Daily Life Classic Reprint written by W. B. Russell-Caley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed in Daily Life The War is turning men's thoughts to the essentials of life. The artificial and superficial are receding into the background, as men are brought face to face with the realities of life. Religion to thousands of men has become a real force in life and heart, and has ceased to be held merely as a pious opinion. The formal recital of a Creed has given way to something deeper and more real, and men are overcoming even by their faith. It is therefore fitting that at such a time as this the facts contained in the old Creed should be presented as the hope of mankind. The Creed is not a Parable, but a statement of facts upon which the Church herself rests, and which forms her message to the world. I am glad, therefore, that, at this time, Mr. Russell Caley is issuing this thoughtfully-prepared volume of Sermons, which sets forth the positive teaching of Christianity, together with such helpful suggestions as to how it should affect the lives of men. Faith without works is dead, and what the world wants to-day is a Faith which can, by revolution izing the life of the individual, gradually revolutionize the life of the world itself. It is because I think this volume of Sermons will be helpful in that direction that I am warmly commending it. Book Mystical Fellowship the Science of Christliness

Download or read book Mystical Fellowship the Science of Christliness written by Richard De Bary and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mystical Fellowship the Science of Christliness: A Catholic Eirenicon From the Exponents of the Mystical Gospel of Brotherliness The purpose, however, of this book is not to preach the Mystical Gospel, but rather to bring readers in contact with some of its treasures, and to show these treasures in an order and interpreta tion in which the value to the present and to the future can be well ascertained. The note of the Mysticism of Fellowship, that is, of genuine Catholic Mysticism, is its apprehension of the living, and, so to speak, corporeal, reality of every dogma of the Church of God. The treasure and precious coin in any bank are not correct or incorrect opinions or theories about money; but they are realities, which, as all the world knows, must be preserved intact, and which will never come back again of themselves once they are dissipated or lost. This work is a call to see what precious realities have been kept by the bankers or custodians of dogma in order that eventually they may be dis tributed among the people; that is, interpreted in their real value; and from thence desired as precious coin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystic Key to Spiritual Illumination and Occult Mastery It is the secret of a stupendous truth, a truth so simple that it may be apprehended by the humblest mind, yet so mighty, when apprehended and applied, as to bring complete Spiritual emancipation and enlightenment to the most benighted and depraved soul, and health and vigor to the most weakened and diseased body. This truth gleams forth in all inspired teaching, but was first brought to its full revelation, in the perfect demonstration of practical experience in the life and work of the Christ. Book The Gospel and the Creed Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel and the Creed Classic Reprint written by Thomas B. Strong and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Creed 'The Purpose and Aim of this Congress is', according to the statement on the front page of its programme, 'to extend the Knowledge of Catholic Faith and practice at home and abroad, and, by this means, to bring men and women to a true realization of our Lord Jesus Christ, as their personal Saviour and King.' The ultimate purpose here stated is one with which every Christian man must have sympathy: and it appeals with special force to members of the Church of England, as it combines in its purview the evangelical message of Salvation through Christ and the reference to Catholic faith and practice. I do not think, therefore, that I need, in any way, to apologize for my presence here to-day; though I am, of course, aware that some, perhaps many, of those here present may support beliefs and practices which do not seem to me to be either rightly described as Catholic, or capable, intrinsically, of valid defence. I could not, for instance, accept many of the statements in the Handbook, under the heading 'misunderstood subjects'. I do hold, and in this I understand that we here I think it will become increasingly manifest throughout Christendom - are all likely to be agreed, that the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the Saviour of man, which is the divine answer to the doubts and hopes of man, will make firm and stable progress when it is presented by a society 'perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgement', 'speaking the same thing'. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mysteria: History of the Secret Doctrines and Mystic Rites of Ancient Religions and Medieval and Modern Secret Orders In all ages mystery has had a special attraction for mankind. Curiosity is innate in us. The child asks about everything, What is this. What is it for, why is it made so, or so? The child fairly harries its parents with questions, never wearies of raising new ones, often so un expected and so difficult, that it would puzzle the wisest philcscpher to answer them. And this instinct of in quiry is dominant in the adult, too. 'the grown man wants to know what is to be found behind every curtain, every locked door, in every sealed letter. And when sated with such trifles he must push inquiry further, into the infinite; must lift the veil that hides the wondrous image at Sais; must pluck from the forbidden tree of knowledge the tempting golden fruit. He would with the Titans storm heaven, and ascend to heights where stirs no breath of air, where stands the boundary-stone of creation. At last when Faust, after manifold crosses and disappointments, sees that we can know nothing, the thought consumes the heart within him. Book Dark Night of the Soul

Download or read book Dark Night of the Soul written by and published by Image. This book was released on 1959-01-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the Image classic, with more than 100,000 copies sold, brings E. Allison Peers's magnificent translation of St. John of the Cross's masterpiece Dark Night of the Soul to a new generation of readers and will renew the interest of those already familiar with its soaring poetry and timeless truths. The sixteenth-century Carmelite monk St. John of the Cross stands alongside St. Teresa of Avila as the West's best known and most beloved Christian mystic. As Peers writes in the Introduction to his definitive translation of Dark Night of the Soul, "The most sublime of all Spanish mystics, he soars aloft on the wings of Divine love to heights known hardly to any of them... True to the character of his thought, his style is always forceful and energetic." Dark Night of the Soul follows the soul's journey from a state of abandonment and darkness to a loving union with God. In a voice at once grandiose and melodious, and a style that combines the systematic theology of St. Thomas Aquinas with rapturous poetry, St. John describes the process of moving away from routine religious rituals and embracing a Being who can be known only through love. His words, Peers writes, "are a wonderful illustration of the theological truth that grace, far from destroying nature, ennobles and dignifies it, and of the agreement always found between the natural and the supernatural -- between the principles of sound reason and the sublime manifestations of Divine grace." One of the greatest contributions to the literature of mysticism, Dark Night of the Soul offers support and encouragement to all who seek oneness with God.
