The German Romantic writer and composer E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) -- perhaps best known to the English-speaking world through his Nutcracker and through Jacques Offenbach's opera Tales of Hoffmann -- struggled toconvince his predominantly bourgeois public of the merits of art and literature. Not surprisingly, many of his most important novellas are bound up with the dilemmas of art and the challenges faced by the Romantic artist, and itis these Künstlernovellen that are the focus of this study. Birgit Röderargues that Hoffmann's artists are not simply individuals who create works of art, but rather figures through whom the author explores the predicamentof those who reject the conventional world of bourgeois reality and seek to assert the claims of the imagination in a world dominated by prosaic rationalism. Contrary to previous scholars however, Röder demonstrates that Hoffmann's novellas clearly warn against a view of art as an autonomous aesthetic realm cut off from the world of reality. This is particularly apparent in Röder's analysis of gender relations in Hoffmann's oeuvre -- especially the relationship between (male) artist and (female) muse -- which underlines the extent to which art, literature, and the imagination are inseparably bound up with the prevailing social reality. The novellas that are given extensive consideration are Das Fräulein von Scuderi, Der Sandmann, Die Jesuiterkirche in G., Die Fermate, Der Artushof, Don Juan, Das Sanctus, and Rat Krespel. Book excerpt: Our Ladies of Darkness opens with a question raised by Nathaniel Hawthorne in his 1835 sketch &"The Haunted Mind&": &"What if the fiend should come in women's garments, with a pale beauty amid sin and desolation, and lie down by your side?&" Joseph Andriano boldly attempts to answer this question by examining some fifteen texts in which such a haunting occurs, including Poe's &"Ligeia,&" Hoffmann's &"The Sandman,&" Irving's &"The Adventure of the German Student,&" Cazotte's &"Le Diable amoureux,&" and Aickman's &"Ravissante.&" His close reading of the individual texts leads to illuminating intertextual parallels, drawn through an archetypal perspective, which creates coherence among the many recurring image-patterns and motifs. The haunting is an incursion into the male ego's dominion: the female demon is seen as a usurper or intruder; she inhabits and insidiously attempts to exert her influence, to feminize the male. These demands include the impelling need to acknowledge male femininity, or androgyny. Ignoring this drive, which Andriano views as instinctual and archetypal, often results in what the Romantics called &"nympholepsy,&" and what Carl Jung called &"anima-possession.&" Although the notion that men need to acknowledge their own femininity is not new, the realization that doing so involves coming to terms not only with Eros (in its widest sense) but also with Thanatos has never been sufficiently emphasized, except perhaps by the post-Jungian James Hillman, by whose work Andriano is especially influenced. This book clearly and succinctly demonstrates that fear of the inner feminine prevents a man from ever fully maturing; his anima remains that of a child (he can only view women as girls or mothers), and he never comes to know, much less to love, the dark side of his soul, his own &"lady of darkness.&"

Book excerpt: The frame story, a series of stories presented within a narrative, has been a staple in the catalog of literary genres ever since people started to tell tales. It enables the writer to integrate a wealth of heterogeneous material and to comment on contemporary events as well. German writers of the Romantic period, such as Achim von Arnim in Der Wintergarten (1809) and E. T. A. Hoffmann in Die Serapionsbruder (1818-21), followed Goethe in his expansion of the frame and began to experiment with the genre, making the first significant changes to the structure of the frame story in several hundred years. Written early in his career, Arnim's work has never received the attention it deserves. It provides us with an early example of tendencies that became important in his later work, such as the manner in which he adapted sources from the past for the present. His frame characters try to confront the reality of the Napoleonic wars and their significance for the Germans. Unlike Arnim's Der Wintergarten Hoffmann's Serapionsbruder was written near the end of his life. In the frame conversations, Hoffmann set down some of his final commentaries on major issues in German Romanticism: madness, the problems of the artist, and extrasensory phenomena. Consequently, the frame is an important and previously neglected interpretative resource, not only for the inner stories here, but also for the major works of both Arnim and Hoffmann. Vickie L. Ziegler examines these two cyclical narratives that are representative of two traditions (Arnim of Goethe's and Hoffmann of Tieck's) and then studies the interaction between the frames and the inner stories. She demonstrates, by means of strict and detailed textualanalysis, that there are significant linkages of meaning among the frame discourses and inner narratives. Written primarily for scholars of the late eigtheenth- and nineteenth- century German literature, this learned and perceptive volume will also interest students of comparative literature and medievalism.
