Book Mysticism and the Early South German Austrian Anabaptist Movement 1525 1531

Download or read book Mysticism and the Early South German Austrian Anabaptist Movement 1525 1531 written by Werner O. Packull and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werner Packull delineates more clearly than any previous scholar the theological and spiritual differences between South German and Swiss Anabaptists. He examines thoroughly the dominant medieval mystical influence in the thought of Denck and Hut and the latter's immediate South German Anabaptist followers. Indeed, Packull decides that South German Anabaptism derives more from medieval mysticism than from the Reformation. Packull is convincing in his demonstration of this thesis because of his meticulous care in reading the primary sources and because he examines and refutes the arguments of those who would place the Protestant influence as the primary one. He carefully isolates and explains particular ideas of the medieval mystics and demonstrates their influence on Denck and Hut. Packull expands and elaborates the earlier suggestions of Kiwiet and Williams, both of whom postulated a discrete Anabaptism in South Germany as against that of Switzerland. He draws on the more recent and still unpublished work of Gottfried Seebass, especially on Seebass' selection of writings which he ascribes to Hut. Packull's second major thesis is that the earliest form of South German Anabaptism was transitional both sociologically and theologically. He demonstrates that there were indeed strains of Anabaptism which were not as clearly biblicist in emphasis as the one in Zurich. Packull's work makes the phenomenon of early Anabaptism more complex, less uniform, but hi252*.00storically more accurate, more in line with the realities of the religious ferment of the 1520s among German-speaking people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in part on a rejection of "worldly" power and the use of force, Anabaptism carried with it the promise of redemptive power. Yet the attempt to banish worldly power to the margins of the Christian community has been fraught with dilemmas, contradictions, and, at times, blatant abuses of authority. In this groundbreaking book, Benjamin W. Redekop, Calvin W. Book Following in the Footsteps of Christ

Download or read book Following in the Footsteps of Christ written by C. Arnold Snyder and published by Traditions of Christian Spirit. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of its enormous historical significance and increased contemporary interest, this is the first general introduction to the spirituality of the Anabaptist tradition. Anabaptist spirituality has been described as "both Catholic and Protestant," a sixteenth-century ascetic lay reform movement inspired both by currents of pre-Reformation devotion to Christ and the Reformation call to return to Scripture. Because of their insistence on adult baptism Anabaptists -- often illiterate artisans and peasants with no formal theological education -- met widespread persecution. Arnold Snyder's sympathetic study draws on court records to give an intimate glimpse into their beliefs, practices, and spirituality. As well as inspiring such groups as the Mennonites, the Amish and various groups of Brethren and Baptists, Anabaptist ideas have profoundly influenced individuals and movements throughout the churches into modern times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two visions of church have dominated Christianity for centuries. The sacramental view centers on celebration of sacred rites, and the instructional view on proclamation of the Scriptures. A third vision - the church as a committed community of faith - has been preserved among persecuted believers known as Anabaptists and Mennonites. These people choose costly commitment to Christ and his way of suffering love. They follow the path of discipleship in community and open themselves to the counsel of fellow church members. Their highest authority is the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ, whom they serve through obedience to the Scriptures. With a spirituality of nonviolence, compassion, and servanthood, they invite all people to know and follow Christ. Today many see the Christian church as hypocritical and irrelevant. Wealth, mobility, and individualism tempt Mennonites themselves to give up a common life. Yet the vision of church as a true community of faith offers hope for renewal. This book helps to reclaim core themes of a biblical and Mennonite vision of being church together. Here is a challenge for longtime Mennonites and for disciples of all backgrounds.

Download or read book Without Spot or Wrinkle written by Karl Koop and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 5, 2000, the Institute of Mennonite Studies held a conference at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary entitled "Without Spot or Wrinkle: Reflecting Theologically on the Nature of the Church." This conference gave attention to ecclesiology, in direct response to challenges that Mennonite church bodies in Canada and the United States have been facing in recent times. The phrase "without spot or wrinkle" comes from Ephesians 5:27, a text addressing relationships between husbands and wives within the Christian household. Historically it has also come to symbolize what Mennonites have sometimes believed about the nature of the church. Anabaptists, and Mennonites who came after them, have often maintained that the true church is a gathering of reborn and spiritually regenerated Christians called to be a community free from moral failure. At present, however, some Mennonites are questioning elements of this conceptual legacy, and, in light of personal failings and hurtful church schisms, are expressing doubts about its practical adequacy and theological tenability. The essays in this book do not provide a unified argument. What the authors have in common is concern for the church and commitment to faithfulness. Readers are invited to reflect on the issues and make their own assessments.
