Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2015 John N. Findlay Award in Metaphysics presented by the Metaphysical Society of America Reviving and modernizing the tradition of post Darwinian naturalism, The Orders of Nature draws on philosophy and the natural sciences to present a naturalistic theory of reality. Conceiving of nature as systems, processes, and structures that exhibit diverse properties that can be hierarchically arranged, Lawrence Cahoone sketches a systematic metaphysics based on the following orders of nature: physical, material, biological, mental, and cultural. Using recent work in the science of complexity, hierarchical systems theory, and nonfoundational approaches to metaphysics, Cahoone analyzes these orders with explanations of the underlying science, covering a range of topics that includes general relativity and quantum field theory; chemistry and inorganic complexity; biology and telenomic explanation, or "purpose"; the theory of mind and mental causation as an animal phenomenon; and the human mind's unique cultural abilities. The book concludes with an exploration of what answers such a theory of naturalism can provide to questions about values and God.

Book Kant God and Metaphysics

Download or read book Kant God and Metaphysics written by Edward Kanterian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant is widely acknowledged as the greatest philosopher of modern times. He undertook his famous critical turn to save human freedom and morality from the challenge of determinism and materialism. Intertwined with his metaphysical interests, however, he also had theological commitments, which have received insufficient attention. He believed that man is a fallen creature and in need of ‘redemption’. He intended to provide a fortress protecting religious faith from the failure of rationalist metaphysics, from the atheistic strands of the Enlightenment, from the new mathematical science of nature, and from the dilemmas of Christian theology itself. Kant was an epistemologist, a philosopher of mind, a metaphysician of experience, an ethicist and a philosopher of religion. But all this was sustained by his religious faith. This book aims to recover the focal point and inner contradictions of his thought, the ‘secret thorn’ of his metaphysics (as Heidegger once put it). It first locates Kant in the tradition of reflection on the human weakness from Luther to Hume, and then engages in a critical, but charitable, manner with Kant’s entire pre-critical work, including his posthumous fragments. Special attention is given to The Only Possible Ground (1763), one of the most difficult, interesting and underestimated of Kant’s works. The present book takes its cue from an older approach to Kant, but also engages with recent Anglophone and continental scholarship, and deploys modern analytical tools to make sense of Kant. What emerges is an innovative and thought-provoking interpretation of Kant’s metaphysics, set against the background of forgotten religious aspects of European philosophy.

Book Metaphysics and Mystery

Download or read book Metaphysics and Mystery written by Thomas Dean and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysics and Mystery: The Why Question East and West is a critical analysis, comparison, and evaluation of philosophical answers, Western and Asian, to the question “Why is there something rather than nothing?” The question, first posed by the seventeenth-century philosopher Leibniz, was reintroduced in the twentieth century by Heidegger. Volume 1 begins with an introduction that lays out the issues raised by the why question. It then analyzes contemporary Western philosophers who provide either cosmological-metaphysical or existential-ontological answers to the question. It also considers transitional answers that bridge the two. Volume 2 examines Asian philosophers, classical and contemporary, who, though rejecting the assumptions behind the question, put forward nondualist answers that have a direct bearing on it. It concludes with an argument for a revised understanding of the why question that draws on the strengths and weaknesses of these Western and Asian philosophies and explores implications for ethics and religious thought.

Download or read book Philosophical Mysteries written by Stephen David Ross and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1981-06-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is my major thesis. Mystery is inherent in both the nature of things and the nature of rationality. I will sustain this thesis by a review of some of the central issues of philosophy to elucidate their mysterious qualities. More important, however, I will develop in detail an explanation of mystery and trace some of its important ramifications." "I will argue that an ordinal metaphysics, with its associated theory of query, provides an account of mystery that no other theory can provide. "While the theory presented here is a theory of philosophical mystery, it has fundamental implications for all branches of knowledge, including the physical and social sciences. "In short, I speak against a simplistic view of the world and of experience based on a simplistic and narrow conception of understanding and rationality. Mystery calls not for veneration and awe, but for a full and complex activity of mind, broaching all established conditions in its pursuit of answers....Reason is fulfilled as completely in mysteries which persevere throughout our efforts to resolve them as in mysteries which are resolved and dissipated, passing into new questions to which we must find new answers, in an unterminating process of rational interrogation." — From the Preface by Stephen David Ross

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever contemplated the cause of the universe beyond simply attributing it to God or The Big Bang? If so, in that causal contemplation, have you ever entertained the idea that the universe is but a dream? Which is to say, have you ever considered that the cause of the universe is that you dreamt it up? At first glance, the idea that you dreamt up the universe perhaps seems implausible. However, what if you really took that idea seriously and followed it to its logical conclusion? What would you discover? Well, this book answers that question. Using the unique form of a graphic novel, artist and writer Alexander Marchand takes you on an artistic, humorous, irreverent, and extremely informative romp through the advanced, nondualistic metaphysics of the contemporary spiritual document known as A Course in Miracles. In the end, you'll not only have a coherent picture of the true nature of the universe and existence, but you'll also have essential, practical knowledge of what you'll need to do to if you are ready to wake up.

Book The Mystery of Matter

Download or read book The Mystery of Matter written by Tony Equale and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystery of Matter attempts to lay down philosophical foundations for the universe as revealed by modern science. It offers a critique of both perennial philosophy's metaphysical dualism and modern positivism's mechanistic reductionism in the areas of metaphysics, epistemology and cosmology. It presents a systematic view that is called cosmo-ontology using a methodology akin to Dewey's instrumentalism. It focuses on the transcendent vitality of material energy and its communitarian character as the antithesis to both dualism and reductionism. It grounds ethics in the politics that derives from the communitarian nature of matter itself; and it speaks to the possibility of relationship to the matrix of all existence.

Book A Commentary on Gabriel Marcel s The Mystery of Being

Download or read book A Commentary on Gabriel Marcel s The Mystery of Being written by Thomas C. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcel was among the first to enunciate the distinction between intersubjective (I-thou) relations and subject to object (I-him/her) relations; the important difference between having and being and between problems and mysteries; the phenomena of the lived body and sensation; the concretely situated and dependent character of human existence as well as its supratemporal, transcendent dimension; the centrality of faith, hope, and love in human life, and our obscure and frequently unrecognized but, nevertheless, real experiences of an Absolute Thou and of our dead loved ones. However, Marcel's philosophical writings, including The Mystery of Being, although innovative and insightful, are often not easily understood by even his most sympathetic readers--frequently because his discussions of issues are unsystematic and sketchy and his reasons in support of the conclusions he arrives at are so briefly presented.

Book Mystical Insights

Download or read book Mystical Insights written by Paul Leon Masters and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a Universal Consciousness in Whose Consciousness, we move, live, and have our being? The exploration of consciousness is the final frontier in the exploration of life and the mysteries of existence-its origin, its on-going presence-as well as for answering questions that intellectual analysis cannot answer because it is based on the speculations of the five senses. Consider then that within every human being there are simultaneous states of existence that are active-predating human life, during human life, and beyond human life. Participate in this world of illusions but always retain the Light of Universal Awareness, wherever your soul's purpose path may lead you. - Dr. Paul Leon Masters As far back as he could remember, Paul Leon Masters was drawn to the mysteries of life, the universe, the mind, the soul, and the Presence of a Higher Intelligence-or God-behind creation. What he studied caused him to thirst for more knowledge about the mystical as well as any form of psychology that had an appreciation of the mystical. He also found that what he had learned, when applied to the lives of others, seemed to help them. This led him to seek a school that had a degree program in tune with the mystical/psychological path he wished to pursue. Traditional universities, particularly in the 1950s, did not offer anything close to what he sought. A true pioneer, in subsequent decades Dr. Masters spent countless hours with thousands of people conducting higher consciousness research - all of which enormously expanded what he originally learned in the1950s and early 1960s. He founded the National Metaphysics Institute in 1965, conducting research on the spiritual heights and potentials of mind and spirit. His contributions to the field of mystical psychology were those of a trail-blazer. Having founded the University of Metaphysics (1976), he then founded the International Metaphysical Ministry (1989) to accommodate the world-wide interest and enrollment in his courses. Five years later, he founded the University of Sedona (2003). He deservedly earned recognition as the world's foremost teacher of metaphysical doctors, teachers, and ministers, offering self-paced, distance learning degree programs in Holistic, New Thought, Theocentric, Transcendent, and Transpersonal Metaphysics. But the most important achievements of all Dr. Paul Masters' efforts were the support and advancement of higher consciousness research, education, and advanced New Thought Metaphysics. Both universities have a curriculum that is non-secular and theological in nature. They are the world's largest schools of their kind, spanning 123 countries with over 10,000 students and graduates.

Book The Mystery Of The Universe

Download or read book The Mystery Of The Universe written by Conception Nardelli and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wonder, how this universe exists? How did the universe start from nothing? This work explores the question of why there is something instead of nothing. Several responses to this question are possible, but only some of them address the question seriously, respecting its emotional aspects as well as its cognitive dimension. It can be argued that the existence of the world has no explanation at all, or that there is a necessary being whose existence is self-explanatory, or that the world exists because it has value. Incorporating aspects of both the "analytical" and "continental" traditions, this book also responds to several historical philosophers concerned with these questions, including Plato, Leibniz, Kant, and Nietzsche.
