Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, no one could explain mountains. Arguments about their origin were spirited, to say the least. Progressive scientists were ridiculed for their ideas. Most geologists thought the Earth was shrinking. Contracting like a hot ball of iron, shrinking and exposing ridges that became mountains. Others were quite sure the planet was expanding. Growth widened sea basins and raised mountains. There was yet another idea, the theory that the world's crust was broken into big plates that jostled around, drifting until they collided and jarred mountains into existence. That idea was invariably dismissed as pseudo-science. Or "utter damned rot" as one prominent scientist said. But the doubtful theory of plate tectonics prevailed. Mountains, earthquakes, ancient ice ages, even veins of gold and fields of oil are now seen as the offspring of moving tectonic plates. Just half a century ago, most geologists sternly rejected the idea of drifting continents. But a few intrepid champions of plate tectonics dared to differ. The Mountain Mystery tells their story.

But when the death of Nora’s husband brings her overbearing mother into town, energy tycoon Barrett McCreary uses the opportunity to launch what might just be a hostile takeover of her cash-strapped resort. To make matters worse, the local Hopi tribe still claims that making snow on the mountain will upset the balance of the earth, and someone is taking matters into their own hands in an explosive way. The ruggedly handsome Cole Huntsman keeps turning up to help Nora, but he seems to be dealing from both sides of the deck. And with a business empire’s profits—not to mention lives—at stake, double-dealing is a deadly strategy. Praise: “Baker’s series debut brings Native American culture and big business together into a clash that can be heard across the mountains."—Library Journal “A thoroughly satisfying mystery! Shannon Baker captures the grandeur and fragility of the Western landscape while keeping the pages turning.”—Margaret Coel, New York Times bestselling author of Buffalo Bill’s Dead Now "Tainted Mountain is a story as mysterious and beautiful as the Arizona landscape in which it's set. Much to the Hollisters' surprise they find not only is the figurine an object of mystery, but the trail of the bearded man is leading them to a ring of international thieves and their search for a bejeweled treasure, hidden centuries ago. The Hollisters finally discover a clue to this treasure from the study of the history of the ship models hung in the churches of Denmark to honor lost seamen. This new Hollister story should be a fine addition to the series, since it is the first time the Hollisters have traveled outside the Western Hemisphere.First published in 1960, this charming mystery-adventure story, faithfully reproduced, is now available in paperback and eBook for the first time! Book ZIMBABWE S MYSTERIOUS MOUNTAIN DISAPPEARANCES

Download or read book ZIMBABWE S MYSTERIOUS MOUNTAIN DISAPPEARANCES written by CLIFF McILWAINE and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting and profound read. This intriguing book retains its momentum from beginning to end. The mysterious disappearances of people in the mist-enshrouded mountains of the Eastern Highlands are used effectively to lay bare much of a dark past. It contrasts events in the new Zimbabwe of the nineties against Rhodesia and a fractured pre-colonial history. It kept me spellbound. Africa holds a unique fascination amidst its exotic landscape and Cliff McIlwaine captures and brings together an assortment of colourful characters from different cultural backgrounds which enhance the dramatic tensions. A magical combination of the prosaic and the spiritual creates fascinating insights into the social, political and historical ethos of Zimbabwe. An enjoyable novel which certainly held my attention.
