Book Mysteries of the Universe Unveiled

Download or read book Mysteries of the Universe Unveiled written by Satya Prakash Verma and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the fact that the story of Blind Students and the Elephant is merely a story, the same has been repeated several times in the history of the mankind right from the primordial times till to-date; in fact this is the way science has gradually grown on its journey of evolution. Scientists have to face similar situations on many occasions; they never get full information before devising any theory, instead they discover part-truths in several steps, each of which is discovered after long periods of time. This is analogous to concept developed by a blind man who forms an idea about the elephant by touches only one of its body-part. Scientists can therefore consider only one aspect of a problem at a time; they encounter with other aspects of the same problem at a much later point of time. At times such a situation might lead to misconceptions. Sometimes such misconceptions, conceived by some renowned personalities, are even considered to be very brilliant ideas and valuable achievements. As a result heritage of falsified knowledge had been transferred, several times in the past, to at least next 3-4 generations. This becomes possible because common man blindly follows renowned persons who are considered to be wise; normally no one even bothers to verify the truth; this is the greatest misfortune of the human kind. Misjudging or regarding such misconceptions as valuable discoveries might cause science to divagate from its path to find out absolute truth; a very long and valuable time might also be lost in elimination of such misconceptions.

Book Mapping the Heavens

  • Author : Priyamvada Natarajan
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2016-04-28
  • ISBN : 0300221126

Download or read book Mapping the Heavens written by Priyamvada Natarajan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical astrophysicist explores the ideas that transformed our knowledge of the universe over the past century. The cosmos, once understood as a stagnant place, filled with the ordinary, is now a universe that is expanding at an accelerating pace, propelled by dark energy and structured by dark matter. Priyamvada Natarajan, our guide to these ideas, is someone at the forefront of the research—an astrophysicist who literally creates maps of invisible matter in the universe. She not only explains for a wide audience the science behind these essential ideas but also provides an understanding of how radical scientific theories gain acceptance. The formation and growth of black holes, dark matter halos, the accelerating expansion of the universe, the echo of the big bang, the discovery of exoplanets, and the possibility of other universes—these are some of the puzzling cosmological topics of the early twenty-first century. Natarajan discusses why the acceptance of new ideas about the universe and our place in it has never been linear and always contested even within the scientific community. And she affirms that, shifting and incomplete as science always must be, it offers the best path we have toward making sense of our wondrous, mysterious universe. “Part history, part science, all illuminating. If you want to understand the greatest ideas that shaped our current cosmic cartography, read this book.”—Adam G. Riess, Nobel Laureate in Physics, 2011 “A highly readable, insider’s view of recent discoveries in astronomy with unusual attention to the instruments used and the human drama of the scientists.”—Alan Lightman, author of The Accidental Universe and Einstein's Dream

Book Newton s Gravity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Douglas W. MacDougal
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-16
  • ISBN : 1461454441
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Newton s Gravity written by Douglas W. MacDougal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-16 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Newton’s Gravity” conveys the power of simple mathematics to tell the fundamental truth about nature. Many people, for example, know the tides are caused by the pull of the Moon and to a lesser extent the Sun. But very few can explain exactly how and why that happens. Fewer still can calculate the actual pulls of the Moon and Sun on the oceans. This book shows in clear detail how to do this with simple tools. It uniquely crosses disciplines – history, astronomy, physics and mathematics – and takes pains to explain things frequently passed over or taken for granted in other books. Using a problem-based approach, “Newton’s Gravity” explores the surprisingly basic mathematics behind gravity, the most fundamental force that governs the movements of satellites, planets, and the stars. Author Douglas W. MacDougal uses actual problems from the history of astronomy, as well as original examples, to deepen understanding of how discoveries were made and what they mean. “Newton’s Gravity” concentrates strongly on the development of the science of orbital motion, beginning with Galileo, Kepler, and Newton, each of whom is prominently represented. Quotes and problems from Galileo’s Dialogs Concerning Two New Sciences and particularly Newton’s Principia help the reader get inside the mind of those thinkers and see the problems as they saw them, and experience their concise and typically eloquent writing. This book enables students and curious minds to explore the mysteries of celestial motion without having to know advanced mathematics. It will whet the reader’s curiosity to explore further and provide him or her the tools (mathematical or physical) to do so.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An incredible tour of our universe's greatest mysteries' Professor Dan Hooper This cutting-edge book investigates the extraordinary potential of multimessenger astronomy to revolutionise our understanding of the universe The spectacular advances of modern astronomy have opened our horizon on an unexpected cosmos: a dark, mysterious universe, populated by enigmatic entities we know very little about, like black holes, or nothing at all, like dark matter and dark energy. This book discusses the extraordinary potential of a new discipline dubbed 'multimessenger astronomy', combining the traditional approach based on the observation of light from celestial objects, with a new method based on other 'messengers' - such as gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays - that carry information from otherwise inaccessible corners of the universe. Interweaving the discussion of multimessenger astronomy with an exploration of the surprising connections between the study of the universe on the largest scales, and the physics of the infinitely small, this text provides an accessible and fascinating introduction to cutting-edge findings in recent cosmology which could soon revolutionize our understanding of the universe.

Download or read book Heart of Darkness written by Jeremiah P. Ostriker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity's ongoing quest to unlock the secrets of dark matter and dark energy Heart of Darkness describes the incredible saga of humankind's quest to unravel the deepest secrets of the universe. Over the past forty years, scientists have learned that two little-understood components—dark matter and dark energy—comprise most of the known cosmos, explain the growth of all cosmic structure, and hold the key to the universe's fate. The story of how evidence for the so-called "Lambda-Cold Dark Matter" model of cosmology has been gathered by generations of scientists throughout the world is told here by one of the pioneers of the field, Jeremiah Ostriker, and his coauthor Simon Mitton. From humankind's early attempts to comprehend Earth's place in the solar system, to astronomers' exploration of the Milky Way galaxy and the realm of the nebulae beyond, to the detection of the primordial fluctuations of energy from which all subsequent structure developed, this book explains the physics and the history of how the current model of our universe arose and has passed every test hurled at it by the skeptics. Throughout this rich story, an essential theme is emphasized: how three aspects of rational inquiry—the application of direct measurement and observation, the introduction of mathematical modeling, and the requirement that hypotheses should be testable and verifiable—guide scientific progress and underpin our modern cosmological paradigm. This monumental puzzle is far from complete, however, as scientists confront the mysteries of the ultimate causes of cosmic structure formation and the real nature and origin of dark matter and dark energy.
