Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mysteries of the Head and the Heart Explained: Including an Improved System of Phrenology; A New Theory of the Emotions, and an Explanation of the Mysteries of Mesmerism, Trance, Mind-Reading, and the Spirit Delusion If any of my readers, on seeing that my whole superstructure is founded upon phrenology, are inclined to reject it on that account, with the remark that they do not believe in phrenology, my reply is that I ask no one to believe in it. Science is not a matter of belief, but of positive knowledge. If it cannot be demonstrated to be true beyond all doubt, it does not deserve to be regarded as a science at all. No one is expected to believe in chemistry, in geology, or in astronomy. When Galileo, by means of his newly invented telescope, discovered that Jupiter had four moons, some of his Opponents declared that they did not believe it. Very well, said Galileo, I do not ask you to be lieve, I only ask you to look through this small tube and see them for yourselves; but instead of looking they arrested and punished him. Download or read book The Mysteries of the Head and Heart Explained written by J Stanley Grimes and published by Westphalia Press. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Stanley Grimes was born in Boston on May 10, 1807. Although he wrote a tremendous amount, little is known about him personally. He married Frances Warner in 1832, but never remarried after she passed away in 1848. He graduated from Union College in 1840, went on to teach law the following year at Castleton Medical College. He quickly left law, focusing on writing on everything from natural selection, theology, and neurology but his focus became mesmerism and phrenology. He wrote extensively on issues of science, religion and human advancement as well. The Mysteries of the Head and Heart is broken into three sections, with the first discussing phrenology, the second examining physiology and the third broadly looking at mesmerism. Some of his suggestions retain a certain possible validity, despite the controversial subject matter. One commentator notes, "In 1839 ... Grimes -- then living in Buffalo, New York and running a small group of phrenologists called the Western Phrenological Society -- published a modification of Coombe's phrenological system that [a] divided the organs of the brain into three groups (the ipseal, the social and the intellectual), and [b] added several new organs to the commonly-held phrenological model, including organs of chemicality, pneumativeness (merely having to do with breathing, alas), sanitativeness and (important for this discussion) credenciveness."

Book The Battle over America s Origin Story

Download or read book The Battle over America s Origin Story written by Brian Regal and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the legends of who ‘really’ discovered America. It argues that histories of America's origins were always based less on empirical evidence and more on social, political, and cultural wish fulfillment. Influenced by a complex interplay of Nativist hatred of immigrants and Aboriginal people, as well as distrust of academic scholarship, these legends ebbed and flowed with changing conditions in wider American society. The book focuses on the actions of a collection of quirky, obsessed amateur investigators who spent their lives trying to prove their various theories by promoting Welsh princes, Vikings, Chinese admirals, Neo-lithic Europeans, African explorers, and others who they say arrived centuries before Columbus. These myths acted as mitigating agencies for those who embraced them. Along with recent scholarship, this book makes extensive use of archival materials—some of which have never been employed before. It covers the period from the sixteenth century to the present. It brings together separate historiographic ideas to create a unified history rather than focusing on one particular legend as most books on the subject do. It shows how questions of who discovered America helped create the field of historical scholarship in this country. This book does not attempt to prove who discovered America, rather it tells the story of those who think they did.
