Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the way in which, by way of the Christian mysteries, divine action impacts human life. The triune God acts in Jesus Christ by means of historical events whose effects transcend time and which are mediated through their celebration in memorial and worship. Drawing on both Evangelical and Catholic writers, Nichols provides evidence that the general portrait of Jesus found in the Pauline letters and the four Gospels rests on reliable historical witness. On this basis, he offers a concise Christology which presents Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of the Messianic hope of the Old Testament; explores his unique being as laid out in the teaching of the great Ecumenical Councils of the first Christian millennium, and describes how the classic theologian of the Latin tradition, St Thomas Aquinas, sees the chief historical events of Christ’s life as affecting humanity throughout future time. Nichols then looks at the Christian concept of God – namely, Trinitarian monotheism. God so conceived can act efficaciously in the created order and does so by the deployment of his Word and Spirit in ways which express for a fallen, historical world, the dynamics of the interaction of the divine Persons in eternity – Persons who now draw human beings within their range. Those gains in understanding are then applied to the individual mysteries of the life of Christ, from his biological conception to his coming Parousia. For each mystery, Nichols describes a biblical preamble; an account of how the mystery is seen by the Liturgy and the Fathers of the Church; illumination from the three theological masters whom the author makes his own in this work – Aquinas, Balthasar and Bulgakov;- and a visual image drawn from the treasury of sacred art.

Book Mysteries of the Christos

Download or read book Mysteries of the Christos written by Daniel Gautier and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study in mystical philosophy, comparative religion, art, and literature. 304 pages. In Mysteries of the Christos the figure of Christ is used as a touchstone for addressing the subjects of cosmology, mystical experience and spiritual transformation. Initially, the book offers a model of Jesus as an initiatory adept whose disciples John and Mary received a special mystical teaching. Through an examination of Hindu, Platonic, Gnostic, Buddhist, and Kabbalistic texts, it is shown how Jesus may be placed in a worldwide tradition of initiation and adeptship. The final half of the book concerns the Western mystical/philosophical teaching known as Hermeticism, with examples from Hermetically trained artists, Dante, Raphael, Shakespeare, Blake, etc. Throughout, the book addresses the issues of the Logos and the Holy Grail. The idea of the Logos as Seed and template of universal order is the ultimate concern of this book. All other considerations, be they Jesus' teachings, the art of Western civilization, Jungian archetypes, the ancient Mysteries, theories of modern physics, are introduced in order to clarify the universal meaning of the Logos. Over 80 B & W illustrations.

Book excerpt: In this lavishly illustrated large coffee-table volume, writer Gorny and photographer Rosikon embarked on a two year investigative journey to seek the truth behind all the relics associated with the passion of Christ. The authors investigated a rich body of documentary evidence found in various museums, archives and churches surrounding sacred objects believed to have been preserved since Jesus' lifetime, exploring and collaborating with historians and scientists in their attempt to verify the relics' authenticity. They reach their conclusions not so much on the basis of faith as on the evidence supplied by historical sources and expert scientific opinion. The relics associated with the Passion - the suffering, death and burial of Christ - have long proved something of an enigma for the scientific community. Relics investigated, and photographed, for this glorious volume include: the Cross, nails, crown of thorns, pillar of scourging, Christ's tunic, the Veil of Manoppello, the Sudarium of Oviedo, the famous Shroud of Turin burial cloth and more.

Book Uncovering the Mysteries of God

Download or read book Uncovering the Mysteries of God written by Jeff Kinley and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could Christ be fully man and fully God? If God is all - loving and all - powerful, why does he allow pain and suffering? Although we have all heard these questions before, and perhaps asked them ourselves, Jeff Kinley presents these age - old questions in a new light, one that speaks to today's generation and their perspective on the world. Structured like a mystery novel, Uncovering the Mysteries of God has each chapter center on an issue or ''case,'' as in Chapter 8: ''Case of the Disappearing Bride - The Mystery of the Rapture'' where Kinley examines what the Bible says about the return of Christ, treating it like a Missing Persons' File. For this generation of believers who are willing to linger in the unknown, Kinley does not really answer any of the questions he poses, but simply comes to them with fresh perspective, some hard facts, and a captivating style that will inspire readers to try and solve these mysteries for themselves.

These are the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter - and each is the source of a particular grace, each has its own special gift for us. Christ in His Mysteries is Blessed Columba Marmion's great meditation on the treasure-house of grace Christ offers to us in the Church's liturgical year. In the clear inspiring language that made him a favourite of Popes and lay faithful alike he explains: How the Mysteries of Jesus are now our mysteries - springs of living water we are meant to drink from. How Christ's wisdom, His Holiness, His strength, are now our wisdom, our holiness, our strength. How to acquire special graces during each liturgical season. "Writings of deep insight and great value ... An authentic treasury of spiritual truth" Pope John Paul II "The works of Marmion are outstanding in the ... depth and richness of their thought." Pope Pius XII Born in Ireland, Blessed Columba Marmion served for several years as a priest in Dublin before finding a vocation to the monastery. He eventually became Abbot of Maredsous Abbey, Belgium. One of the foremost spiritual masters of the 20th century, his books were translated into eleven languages and sold some 1.5 million copies. Alan Bancroft's new translation is meticulously faithful to the French original.
